  1. Scientology logic or not, I’m just the thankful for my high blood pressure medication.  It sounds like that will enable me to get out there chasing the big bucks with my crossbow on October 1 next year.

My freezer is too full now to mess around with it yet this year, thanks to the early antlerless gun season that you anti/crossbow folks pushed the DEC into giving us back home (3) years ago.  Thanks a lot for that by the way.  There’s nothing like being able to legally light up the deer woods with gunfire in a September.

Here’s to you, and best of luck to you for the rest of the seasons and stay safe up there in the trees:

The difference between you and I is we can disagree on topics but I'm not going to take every opportunity to try to get under someone's skin. You really think this type of behavior changes anyone's opinions? Maybe ask yourself what good this brings to the forum. I don't care that you harvest deer early with a rifle, I don't care that you advocate crossbows. It's sad you have to take everything to the extreme. Happy hunting, crossbow or not, I'm done.

  2. What type of broadhead were you using ?  I had the same thing happen to me on the last deer that I killed with my vertical bow.  That was a 4 pointer, back around 2012.  It must have caught a glimpse of my draw, causing it to go on high alert.

I drew as it passed thru the hedgerow that my stand was in.  It stopped walking, quartering away, about 25 yards out.  I aimed for the center of the last rib.  Upon my release, it reared down and back, taking the arrow, with o-ring style mechanical broadhead, thru the center of the neck.

It ran off with that arrow sticking out both sides.  Probably hit the jugular. I heard it crash, about 50 yards away, and flopping around in the bushes for about 2 minutes.  I still waited 1/2 hour before I walked over to where I heard the noises and gutted it.

Even though I got to eat that deer, that experience soured me more than any other, on hunting with a vertical bow.  The best thing that the crossbow has going for it, is the elimination of that draw motion with a deer in close, that so often cause a deer to go on high alert.

How many “high back” or shoulder blade hits have we read about on this site alone over the years ?  Unless one is willing to get way high up in a tree (the older I get the less I am into that), it’s very tough not to alert a deer by drawing a bow.

I know you're doing your classic Wolc gaslighting here and I won't respond a second time to nonsense, but I very rarely get caught drawing my bow. If you are a true bowhunter then it's not that difficult, yet here you are standing on your homemade pedestal preaching more anti compound bow BS, since you've found your new crossbow religion. No one is buying into your scientology logic, just stop.

  3. Lets see a pic.  I need a little more motivation.
Haha I generally don't show bucks on the Internet until they're dead. I'll give you something to picture though, he's a giant framed 10 point with 13" g2's and g3's. It'll take far less of a deer to make me shoot but motivating to know he's out there. If the 9 point that hit the scrape this morning with 3 other bucks comes back tonight I'm 18 yds away. He's no giant but not one I'd probably pass either.

  4. Had 3 big does at 12 yds tonight, came to full draw and put my thumb on the trigger only to change my mind. There's too many bucks in there right now to booger it up retrieving a doe. I heard a buck grunt in the corn, he came out right at dark, not sure what buck it was but I got stuck in the stand well after dark waiting on him to work off.

  5. Strange. I'd grind it all then and restock the freezer with a different deer for steaks etc. I'm assuming you've cut plenty of deer up before and not had the issue? If you aren't cutting steaks across the grain it'll make it tough.

  6. Holy crap! Lol. Consider me motivated!
    Good luck on getting him!
He was big last year but he got even bigger this year, this property isn't great for holding them but either way it's exciting to get pics like that! I've only got one buck higher scoring than him so far, and that one is +/- 160 we're guessing.

  7. 2 bucks and a doe and fawn tonight. Bucks weren't big enough, I need to see what made those scrapes before I shoot a decent buck in there. Wind was not ideal although the predicted wind was perfect. None of them winded me although downwind. Had to wait til well after dark to let them feed off a ways.

  8. First off, I think we need to separate "bucks chasing does" and estrous cycles. Bucks will bump does quite regularly, it does not mean that a doe is in estrus. I'm sure a doe has come into estrus early at some point, but nature has the ultimate determination of that, just because you get a cold front has no bearing on the reproductive cycles. I've witnessed bucks grunt and push a doe 50 yds in a field several times in the first few days of the season, it's fairly common for bucks to bother does. Fawns born to early are doomed, as well as too late. Nature determines the cycle, not the weather, not because bucks are pushing does, not because you hear a doe bleat etc... Is it impossible? Probably not, is it likely, absolutely not.

  9. Sat one of our leased properties last night for the first time, multiple bucks every night on camera. The neighbor fired a rifle about 30 minutes before dark, hopefully it was an actual "youth hunter." Had a small 8 come out of the corn before dark and feed by but the bigger bucks stayed out of the field all night, which hasn't happened in 2-3 weeks. I'm guessing the rifle shot is to blame. The super wide buck showed back up early this morning, so that's reassuring. I did some mid day scouting on some public land close to home and found several fresh scrapes and a huge buck track in them. Going to spend a few sits near there. I'll attach the scrape track...IMG_20231010_110600621.jpg

  10. Dog down 10 8 Pm.
Took the week off to coyote hunt and ended the week taking down a dog that was chasing the landowner last week while he was checking trail cameras.
While we were heading out to the stand location after sundown, we noticed two dogs flanking us.
They made their move and closed the gap pretty quickly once we got into a field.
I was ready and dropped the lead dog.

  11. Thought I'd try n get the scoop here first. What should I know about fishing Oneida lake in October? I have a friend who lives n dies to fish. I'd like to get him out on a boat for walleye. Help me out w some suggestions pls.

If you're going out in the next week or so I'd focus on deep flats, 40-55'. The north shore has been good lately, (Godfrey point area). If you can troll baits at 45' at 1.8-2.0mph with stickbaits that'll do the trick. If you aren't set up for trolling then jigging is also pretty productive, I'd recommend jigging raps or blade baits. The fish will eventually move/suspend in different areas.

  12. Agreed. I have deer every morning and night at the spot I killed the doe opening morning but can't bring myself to go kill another doe when it's 85° out. Everything about the temp sucks for shooting one. I guess I'll just fish the rest of the week...

  13. Hit the range for some barrel break in and a quick zero. Took 3 rounds to get it zeroed at 200, so far I love it. Next trip I'll shoot some groups with different ammo's to see if it likes any particular kind more than others. These were Hornady 147 ELDX.
