  1. Late to the game but spaniels are the truest flushing breed. When trained in a “classical” sense meaning allowed to flush fur as well as game. Will put quite a bit of small game in front of your barrels. As of recent I find many who won’t let their spaniel flush fur. I train mine the way men in my family have trained spaniels for four generations and don’t feel like they lack in either department. I currently have an American Cocker who is nearing the end of her hunting career due to age and an accidental Boykin/Springer cross that is showing promise through his first season. Like others have said all will need exercise and training but I’d you have the time to put in its well invested. Treed by the young dog moments later he flushed a grouse that I missed as usual. 2. took the spaniels out after third shift this am. Flushed up 5 birds total in my quest for a limit the dogs complimented each other nicely with their differences in flushing styles Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. spent my birthday hunting pheasant with my dad and young pup. He needs a bit more training to keep from flushing running birds out of range but I’m more than pleased with the 6 month old Boykin/Springer cross. Midday he started working them closer and was able to connect on one for his reward. He broke from his retrieve and flushed two more in range I wasn’t ready as I was helping him through his first retrieve and my dad missed. He then returned the bird to me with out much encouragement. Most impressed with my daughters training ability and getting him steady to shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Thanks was a fun day afield Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. First light very nice I hunt 8p quite a bit. Where I hunt in 8g I believe the woodcock are residents and end their migration here in the spring. We started flushing them in August once training opened. There were good numbers of woodcock in the moose river plains the first week of October so hopefully the numbers will be good when the migration comes down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Libbie had her first chance to hunt behind Nash today weather was rainy this am and a 14 year old girl can’t have her hair messed up so we headed out around noon. Hunted for 2 hours and the dog flushed 9 birds. Shells were fired and lead flew but no roosters dropped. She was super excited about how well the dog was at doing his part but was concerned about how far out he was going on a running bird. She also noted how she is starting to read the dogs better and how their quartering/pace changes when they get on a bird. He also flushed out a cotton tail but she noticed to late to get a shot. 7. Went out with Nash for a couple hours yesterday. The young flusher put up four birds. I only had a shot on one due to the trees holding leafs. Missed on that opportunity. Saturday my daughter Libbie will get to see the rewards of her summers hard work as she walks behind the pup she trained during the youth hunt weekend. Watching Bailey’s healing progress but looking like she may not flush a bird this season... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. had Nash up to moose river plains since Wednesday. The young dog exceeds expectations for sure. Not being one to take lots of pictures but rather live in the moment I don’t have any pics of our party’s harvest of 2 wood cock and three grouse. But for those who know the quarry the boy was putting up birds. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Should have wish the cocker hadn’t torn her ccl but seems as though this should work out Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Shot some clays with my daughter this am. Then had Nash out for about 1.5hr run. Flushed 5 grouse and ran 3 rabbits. Season should shape up nicely with just this young pup. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. The 28 is an enjoyable gauge. I know mine carries light on all day grouse ventures. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. latest picture of the spaniel Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Got the news from the vet yesterday that my cocker bailey has a torn ccl and won’t be hunting this fall. Forward and onward with Nash my 4 month Boykin/Springer. Should be interesting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Brought Nash home this past weekend he is fitting in well no issues with the other dogs and his training is underway. Here’s to developing another flushing spaniel Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Thanks he will be out this fall my cocker is slowing down at ten but still loves the hunt. If he develops as well as she did we will be in very good shape. Dad is slowly becoming a better shot over the years too so. I swear grouse are equipped with some type of radio evasion equipment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Yes he should work well. He’s half Boykin half ESS. Will spend some time with pheasants and grouse/woodcock also. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. newest spaniel coming to the family mid June. Gonna be busy this summer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Haven’t used one but keep in mind it would be considered a motor vehicle on state land.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Depending on FPS should work well out to about 40 yards or so. I shoot 7.9grain pellets at about 950 FPS. And take squirrels with out a problem. Outside of 40 yards the drop becomes a bit much but is doable if they are sittting still with my scope to 60 yards due to the reticle. This is with a 20 yard zero and a few different pellet trials to find what performs best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Waiting to get out until the baby comes but my cocker is ready. Flushed 25 and took 4 before the deer season break. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. If the temps get down into teens I just follow the cocker and keep moving. Staying warm by just hiking behind the dog and taking grouse. As far as squirrels sit till cold then still hunt a bit then sit some more. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. As far as I know. It isn’t highly publicized by the fire department at this point. And the protester numbers have dropped in the past few years. But still proves to be a good fundraiser for the fire department. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Yes squirrels are always fun and my daughters favorite. The rabbit hunting around here isn’t too bad but not my primary target either. My cocker busts them out well though and mostly forces them to open fields. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Headed out with Flushing Bailey Lynn this morning. And flush she did three roosters were put up. It’s time for me to get another pair of hips boots though as the were going out over the cattails and I don’t want to put her in a situation where she can’t retrieve the bird as they can prove difficult due to their size. Missed a rabbit and couldn’t shoot at two more as she runs them so close. We will be shifting our concentration to ruffed grouse in the coming weeks. Should be a good season ahead and her retrieving can shine with the smaller birds. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
