  3. Thanks to everyone for a fun and friendly contest, and a big thanks to WNY and Burma for their efforts to make it happen. Having run different turkey contests over the years I know first hand the amount of work involved. Surprising the number of good birds tagged with the challenges we had this spring!
  4. NYgobbler on the board- MR Ivory Spurs Hunt started out dead this morning, no gobbling on the roost, got real funny when 4 jakes ran in silent on me as I stood up to leave, turned around to pick something up, turned back around, and there they stood, @ 15 yards, then set up on a gobbler that had me pinned down (60-80 yards in wide open woods) for 30 minutes trailing a hen that stood out in front 15-20 yards. I ended his taunt, after she walked past me, and cut short his schedule this morning. Light bird at 17lbs, but he sported 1-1/8" spurs, 8-1/2" beard. Nice to walk out the door and hunt right from the house.Hunter: Mookyj (mike) * State: NY Date: 5-8-14 Time: 6:40 Method: Rem 11-87, Hevi-Shot Turkey Choke, Hevi-13 3" #6's Species: Eastern Male Wt: 17lbs 0oz Left spur: 1-1/8" right spur: 1-1/8" 8-1/2" beard NWTF Score - 17.000 + 17.000 + 11.250 + 11.250 = 56.500

  8. actually the bushnell version II
  9. My weims broke a flock first day, unfortunately 80 yard out in a field and I watched a very nice formation of 10 birds flying off together way off onto another property. Had a hard time finding any sign and or birds. in just a few days I put in over 15 miles on the dogs. Lot of walking for such little sightings or sign. 2nd day, I walked up on a flock coming up through thick cover. A jenny appeared in an opening, 1st tag filled, good break at the shot, however no call back, rather odd. 3rd day, ran the dogs ragged, went back out in the afternoon, blind called for over 2-1/2 hours (coarse yelp, and cluck or two on a funky ol' box call, and every once in a while a pissy hen with a mouth call), Stood up to leave (had to go back to send caregiver home), and caught movement 60 yards out going in behind a big tree. Dumb luck I didn't get caught. Out stepped two gobblers, they were coming to the call. I waited til 30 yards, and dropped one. Both were similar size. We'll be out taking the dogs rest of the season for my wife, and a few hunting buddies.
  10. yep, reproduction calls for the banquet. I know Dave, and he's a super guy. Very talented man,and if ya get the chance, very nice to talk to.
  11. just a little more than 3 weeks to go, need to get an idea who plans on coming!
  12. solid 4 year old bird! congrats
  13. Very nice and honest story. Really enjoyed reading it. Congrats on putting the smackdown on your first bird. Now you will enjoy lack of sleep, frustration, and loss of extra spending money for years to come each spring and fall season
  14. I was suppose to go to Vermont next week, however mother in-law is going thru radition for post op cancer and had to change my plans. For now I willl be designated caller and help fill a few tags, assuming they ever start gobbling here.
  15. Hunted the front of our property this morning under the advisement of my wife Lee, who spotted a big gobbler in the field next to our property the evening before. I roosted there that night, but could not raise a bird anywhere. This morning I set up in our north end, next to that same field. Lee had to be to work early, and would not be able to join me for the morning hunt. Beautiful sunny morning, and very quiet. So quiet you could hear insects burping. Not a gobble to be heard anywhere. At 5:30am a hen cut and cackle a little bit on the roost. 5:50am, I spot two hens fly down to the opposite end of the field a few hundred yards away. Dead silent for the next hour. Several times, I nearly decided to pack it in, and just head into work. I made only a few calls using a PD mooky screamer 3 mouth call and a slate. 6:30am a hen scolds me, and we have a short argument, four volleys of conversation to be exact. Five minutes later, two hens appear 80 yards out, looking for me. Shortly after, a fan tail appears over the horizon, followed quickly by three more hens, with a sixth hen loitering out in the middle of the field by herself. Moments later the group closed the gap, and the girlfriends got their boyfriend in to some trouble. 6:40am I had the gobbler down. Gobbler weighed 20.5 lbs, swung a 9.5” beard, and sported 1” spurs.
  16. Filled a tag on Friday, May 6th. Short and sweet hunt with Paul Walling . We roosted these gobblers on state land just south of Cortland in the town of Virgil. Went in the next morning, and were able to set up 125-150 yards from them. I was on point, while Paul set up 50 yards behind to handle calling chores. We were both running mouth calls that Paul had made himself (PD Turkey Calls). There was a pair of gobblers that gobbled well, and a group of birds that were located way down along the bank. Once they came off the roost, I never made another call, Paul literally roped this gobbler in, and right in front of me. The second gobbler was coming but had not crossed up onto the flat we were on. The gobbler put his head up, within range, and the Remington 11-87 roared. The gobbler was a very solid two year old, weighing in at 18.75 lbs, 8.5” beard, 7/8” & 13/16” spurs. At 5:50AM, the hunt was a quick one. Paul and I team tag quite often, and it has filled many tags. We continued on, in hopes of me repaying the favor for Paul. We were unable to raise a gobbler in the several places we spent time in.
  17. From my blog: Last minute tips for 2011 New York Spring Turkey Season In most areas of the great Empire State, things appear to be running a little late as far as wild turkeys go. Flocks have split up only in past few weeks, which is what one would expect first week of April. In Central New York from which I call my stomping grounds, the woods are wide open, affording little cover or concealment for positioning on gobblers. Expect to find sizable harems and a lot of areas with a boss bird keeping gobbling to a minimum. Patience is key! There should be some satellite two & three year old gobblers that may peel off to come check you out. This means being in the game at all times, to and from your vehicle, and not fidgeting around when not much is happening. These satellite gobblers are likely to come in silent, or only give you a single cluck. The 2010 spring hatch was spotty in many areas, and you may find only few jakes to stir up the action. Opportunities during early season are likely to happen quickly. If you don’t have birds roosted, and are not waiting on them close and well before first light, you will have your work cut out for you. It will be a good week or more before there will be much green-up to conceal moving from spot to spot. If you manage to get on to a bird early only to be defeated, it would be prudent to be back there again mid morning to see if he should return to check out that ‘mystery’ hen he heard sweet talking to him hours earlier. With the woods being very open, there will be many spots so open, that decoys would be well advised. Just like open fields, a gobbler will come in just far enough to see what he wants to see. Open woods are no different. As with any good set up, if you can position yourself so that the gobbler will appear at the same time within shotgun or bow range, your chances for success increase dramatically. As always: safety first! Do not hide in cover, or position your decoys so that you may be compromised should an unethical hunter decide to stalk your position. Just as in defensive driving, take it upon yourself to avoid a potential mishap, and place your decoy 20-25 yards out, and where you can spot an incoming hunter. A good reminder to all: DO NOT STALK HEN CALLS! For those that may use a gobble shaker, or other gobble call, do only in safe areas to do so. Same goes for gobbler decoys. While I am on my high horse, there is a product on the market that is essentially a decoy that mounts on your gun barrel for the purpose of stalking up on a bird. In many states the act of stalking a wild turkey while hunting is illegal. I cannot begin to describe how many safety issues and problems there are with using this product. All I can say to those that would insist on legitimizing and using it: I would love to buy you an insurance policy with myself as the beneficiary. Last but not least, move through your hunting grounds much like a hunter who still hunts for deer, especially with the lack of cover. Run and gun, may not be a great strategy the first week. Another key to success during the opening week is active scouting while hunting. You may not get on to a gobbler first thing, but each bit of information, clues, and sign that you come across may be the ticket for putting a successful plan in place. Be safe, shoot straight! © 2011 Mike Joyner- Joyner Outdoor Media
  18. When we got this through (NY NWTF chapter) we heard a lot of disturbing stories of guys sneaking out, guys grabbing the shotgun and shooting the bird right in front of the youth, and so on. Real low life to do that to a kid. Guiding the youth during this special hunt allow the adult to enjoy 99% of the hunt, the kid 100%. Many years I borrow a kid to go as my children are grown up. Priceless to have a youth enjoy the experience as we do.
