  1. I didn’t feel comfortable trying to light a fire in the woods. It’s to dry and I don’t want to take a chance. I found some punk wood this morning and decided to give it a shot in my fire pit. I tried the punk wood with the ferro rod. It seemed to want to light, but after a few minutes I added a Vaseline cotton ball one spark and fire. Was lite. I also pulled a piece of rope apart and tried that it took a few shots but I got it going. I’m going to grind up some punk wood and vacuum seal it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Found these eggs under a rock. Cut one open there was puss and a drop of blood in it any ideas? I also found my first ADK shed it’s a little ratty but still my first one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Up at my house for a few days got a lot of yard work done yesterday. The whole time I had the pleasure of seeing frogs, snakes and the biggest salamander I’ve ever seen strong little guy. Some of the toads where so fat they couldn’t get out of the way of the mower. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I'm heading up to my house this afternoon.Going to give my gear a workout on the safety of my property. Thanks for all the input good stuff I hope it gets everyone to pull out there gear and test it.
  5. Thanks i'm going to do a little more research, but it's something i'd like to have. Does the explorer have the birdseye like the gpsmap 66i? I'd love to have that feature on my gps
  6. I've been in there a bunch of times good olive cream cheese.
  7. Did you have to pay for a yearly subscription? The spot is $200 a year.I'm thinking of getting it when I retire right now I can't justify that for the few days.
  8. Got my survival book. Looks good so far. There’s a story in the intro about a hunter getting lost. When they found him he had a camp set up and was waiting for a rescue team. So letting someone know your route(where about) and like “DirtTime” said stay put. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. They burn hot. You’d be surprised how many you can jam into a 35mm film canister. I vacuum sealed about 40 into a small bag. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. The life straw works great. I use one all the time. There’s no way I could carry enough water. I’ve drinking out of puddles with it never a problem. From what I read there no shelf life on them. My sawyer is a little better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I carry a leatherman everyday, but I wouldn’t want to cut up tinder and such with it. Maybe in a pinch. Sometimes I over think things the hacksaw blade or a piece of file like AL mentioned is a good option. I’m picking up some good info here keep it coming Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. My biggest concern is while hunting it’s normally cold and by the time I realize I’m in for the night my hand will be to cold to deal with fire starting. Right now I’m trying to perfect the three methods I mentioned in all weather conditions. The cold weather will have to wait, but in the meantime I’ll give nighttime and rainy conditions a shot. 13. Looks great!!! Love the Dorito eating crayfish lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. There for starting a fire. They burn hot. I’m not die hard and hope to never need to use any of this stuff. I just started hunting up in the ADK’s and want to be prepared if something happens and I need to spend the night or three. I’ll always start with a lighter then matches the ferro rod is a last resort. My luck the spring will pop out of the lighter. The matches will get damp and the ferro rod will snap. 15. So far these three knives have held up(no batoning) but they throw sparks carve and cut rope. All three are easy to maintain there blade with a stone. I think I’m going to add a carbon steel mora. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Thanks I just ordered a pocket book and got side tracked by an old trapping book,I'll look into that book next. I'm getting pretty good with knots.I have a piece of cord with me at work that I practice with. This is starting to become a new hobby for me.
  17. Is the green knife a mora? I'm thinking of getting there 511 or classic #2 I still have to test the knives I have but it doesn't take much arm twisting to pick up another few.
  18. I've been watching dave Canterbury on utube.I picked up some good info I was mostly looking for knots, but watch a bunch of his videos "Eat your damn coyotes" I'm working on the first aid pack, but to me the pack kits have a lot of crap i'd never need. good info here thanks[out of likes] Did you go to the pathfinder school?
  19. This is strictly a pack in case I get lost or injured and have to spend the night or three. I have a little pot it's not in the picture because I was testing it out and left it up at my house.
  20. Those are nice sea bass are you fishing on the Viking ?
  21. I have a lifestraw,But with the sawyer I can fill a bottle or pot For sleeping I was going to use one of the space blankets. But the Tyvek sounds good.
  22. A lot of good info here. I like the candle idea and will look into some small ones I can seal up,but i'm keeping the cotton balls they burned hot.I also tossed the magnesium stick away to much work to get a few flakes and probably impossible with cold hands.I also saw where some guys where crumbling up fire starter logs.I might give that a shot as well. I also like the garbage bags too. My plan is to learn to use what I need to get me through one night then triple it.I'm going to start in blue bird conditions then work my way into a cold wet night. I've already been working on just add water meals. The ones they sell for camping/hiking where nasty and expensive.I can and do sometimes live on rice and beans. The instant potato's are pretty good as well.Going to try some oat meal and pancake mixes not a fan of ether but in an emergence i'll deal with it. I'm added a sharping stone and will be testing my knives out to see which ones are appropriate for the tasks up to now it's been more of what I wanted to carry.I saw a few utubes where they modified the usmc kabar but i'm not sure I want to grind it. I had a bunch of survival books but one of my nephews got into it and I gave them to him.I can agree if you don't refresh your mind it's all forgotten.I'm going to pick up a few more. Thanks again keep it coming
  23. Not a prepper. My pack is for hunting, fishing and hiking I hope i never have to need it but want everything to work should I get lost or hurt and have to spend the night. On average most people are found within 1-3 days.Water, warmth and food will help keep you still until your rescuers find you. I'm working on a medic kit as well.
  24. It’s been nonstop here in islip with truck loads of trees.yet all I got was a sprinkle for about 20 minutes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
