I think with this wind today, I can sneak into (or very close to) a doe bedding area that I found last year. I am not really seeing any does except for the two from Monday evening. I had a few deer encounters in this area last year and got busted both times.... -
I really enjoy watching THP and The Hunting Beast with Dan Infalt. Learn a lot from these guys and I admire their dedication. I do think Dan needs shave though...lol

Question For The Successful Hunters So Far
Arcade Hunter replied to SportsmanNH's topic in Bow Hunting
I did not see any ticks on my 8G deer until I picked up the head from the butcher shop. I saw one come out of the fur on its head. (getting a Euro) -
Repost On the board! Opening day I bumped this one out of his bed and found active scrapes in his area. Sunday evening I caught him and another real big one entering a bean field and have a good idea what the travel route is from the bedding area to the feeding area... so last night I had a pretty good wind and I decided to set up on the travel route to the bean field... the route connects a crp field to the bean field through a narrow strip of hardwoods. I set up about 10 yds inside the the field edge, well brushed in and facing the travel route. About 6:15, I turn around to look out into the field and there he is! He snuck in behind me! I have no shot and he is too far away . I know I have to move to the field edge and get in a spot where I can shoot without being seen, I found the spot I needed to move to then waited for him to put his head down into the beans. Every time his head went down, I took a baby step towards the edge. Eventually I made it to where I had to be and as luck would have it, he is feeding toward my shooting opening and after what seemed like forever, he was there. I drew and hit the release just as he started to walk again the the arrow hit him ... he turned away and took a few rapid steps then went down. Im flipping out now cause I know it was a bad shot, but he is down and trying to get up but he cant,, so I watch him intently and within two minutes his head went down and he expired. 34 yd shot Now I realize that I am not going to be able to get him out of here myself. I made a post in Live from the woods to see if anybody was nearby because I need some help! Then TF calls me and is on the way... Tacks is looking for help for me, Larry is giving high fives, Moho is pumped, Zeke is offering help, Andrew is all in for a drag... Ill tell you that we have the finest group of like minded people on here and that makes this the very best part of the hunt! Andrew took the pictures... great job and he is a dragging machine along with Jay... I just cannot give enough thanks to this group for support and help! And, This is a certified GTG! On the public from the ground to boot

I will let you know. This will be a next year project if I really decide to do it but before I fill the shed with crap, I am going to get the walls insulated so I can run a small heater out there in the winter.

So, I have been thinking about using my outdoor storage shed as a walk in cooler for the early months of deer hunting. There are some Utube vids out there that show how to convert a digitally controlled window ac unit to do this job. Personally, as an automation programmer, Im not going to use the setup shown on Utube, I will use a used Unitronics controller off ebay and control the window unit that way.. I would have limitless (almost) flexibility with controlling this as well as being able to change set points for compressor and fan controls without having to take a laptop out everytime I want to change something. I would also be able to close alarm circuits if the space fell out of any specified temperaturerature parameter. One more thing I would do differently would be to use a heater element instead of a lightbulb to warm the ac units sensing probe. I would set it up to sent just enough power to the heater to fake out the unit's sensor without risking overheating the sensor and destroying it.

I remember years ago when we used to hunt Allegany St Park.... we drove there and were staying elsewhere, Highbanks I think it was. We get in the park and were driving to a parking spot, mind you it is 5 am... theres a guy with his shotgun swigging booze out of the quart bottle walking down the road... staggering down the road.... we did not go anywhere near that area

I hear that... some state land it is required to wear a certain amount of orange....
-
Ive heard this kind of stuff too... but my hands were tied. Side note though... I think I have a good idea about making a hanging cooler for the warmer season......

Sorry to hear the bad news.. he looks like a cool pup to have around

Totally agree. I have been scouting this public a lot, I try to scout for a few hours while I am out there too. The more options you have the better off you will be. I am really starting to like hunting public, I feel that i am learning a lot too. Getting excited for my opening gun week at Allegany. Ill have to scout as I go unless I can get up there a few time at the end of October

The bow buck... I used the Buck and Doe Shop for the first time... I am happy with the job they did. Once it gets colder out I will resume butchering my own, I sent the head off for a Euro... Not the biggest head but the most memorable bow buck

Bingo! I just never expected to see that! Chevy Chase said it best: "I couldn't be more surprised if I woke up and found my head sewn to the carpet"

So I get out of work later than usual but I have just enough time to get in for the last hour sit. Not enough time to get into my scouted areas because they are in there pretty far. I have a decent wind to try an ag field near the parking area, an area I have never looked at before. There is sign galore; rubs, dozens of them and big runs all over the place. Things are looking and feeling good. I set up along the edge of some thick bedding and the ag field and i get brushed in real well. I get my little hunting chair set up and nestle in with about 70 minutes of legal light left. Where I parked there were two cars, one had bike racks on it and a pick up truck. I figured there were one, maybe two hunters back in here somewhere. I minute or two after I sat down I watch another bow hunter enter the field from the same corner I did and he walks out into the ag in the wide open... He stops and is looking around and when he looks in my direction, I stand up and wave to him... just want him to know I am in here. He waves back and heads out the same way he came in. No problem, its public and he has the same right to be there than I do. About 15 minutes of light left, I see deer legs off to my left and I carefully peek out to see if it is a doe. Indeed it is, its a big doe with another one , a little smaller. They are just standing there about 60 yards to my left and maybe 15 to 20 yds inside the ag. Thinking I need them to walk towards me in a hurry cause I am running out of time, I hit my can call twice. These deer do not have a clue i am there. They proceed to walk right for me... here they come... I can see them real good now but I need the to move another 15 yards or so into my shooting opening. That would have given me about a 20 - 25 yd shot broadside and the wind was perfect. They take another step or two, stop, turn around and run back into the corner that they came out of. Shit! I look off to my right and I see a bow hunter just standing inside the ag about 40 yds from me, in the wide open. Im thinking WTF.... this guy was wearing a white tee shirt, navy blue shorts and it looked like flip flops on his feet... a younger guy maybe 25 yo. This hunt is over. I get up and grab my chair and start walking toward him.. we meet and start talking... he says He never saw me sitting there etc.... and we walk out chit chatting about deer hunting. He told me he has been driving around the public for the last hour or so and he saw four doe cross the main road so he shot into the lot, parked and ran over my way. (He did have flip flops on by the way). Anyway,... What crazy shit have you and gals seen out on public?
