do your self a favor and buy the rcbs decapping only die for the 06 ,end of problem also once you go to a dry lube you will never go back

    Dry lube? Tell me more?

Yes there is, too much lube will cause dents in the case shoulder. I use Hornady Unique case lube, it is a paste that I put on with my finger and spread on the cases very thinly.

Yes  to much lube is a problem. I use the one-shot on my revolver brass . I use rcbs and the lube pad for my rifle cartridges.. lube an even coat then I roll on a thin tissue paper to remove any excess.  Doesn't take much to dent a shoulder.

Thanks, I did end up denting a couple of shoulders. I sprayed the cases lightly with the one shot and after they seemed to be giving way to much resistance I sprayed them some more and while they worked in easier a couple did dent.

This is a big learning process but I am enjoying it.

Was it once fired commercial 30-06 brass or military brass ?

Make sure you have the de capping rod recessed into the die before using it.

Also get some Hornady one shot case lube and spray your cases liberally.

Under lubing is a major cause of stress and failure during the reloading process.

Hand priming is ok for small pistol, but for large rifle and magnum loads, you need to seat the primer with authority and a mounted press system is best suited for that.

    Good luck and shoot safe.

    SJC

Commercial brass but some of it was fired more than once.

Hornady one shot lube is what I am using. Is there a such thing as using to much lube?

Previously I was using the mounted press to seat the primer but it was a slow process. I was hoping the hand primer was going to me easier and a little faster.

I like the rcbs universal hand primer. When I bought mine it had the rod for both large and small primers as well as the holder for the primer itself.

Rcbs universal hand primers won't work on anything bigger than 45 colt. I have to prime on the press for the 480 ruger. Its alot slower with fat fingers.

Decapping pins are a consumable part of reloading. I have at least 3 large and 3 small spares.

You may also want to get a stuck case remover.  Its not if but when you will need one. 30‐06 seems to be a little stickey when resizing and decapping. Cleaning is the key. Make sure you don't have any cleaning medium left in the case. My next purchase will be an ultrasonic cleaner. I inspect with a small flash lite and a little compressed air to get out any walnut pieces stuck inside.

So you seem to think 30-.06 cases need a little more effort when resizing and decapping? The effort difference between .243 and 30-.06 is surprising. I have also noticed that the 30-.06 cases resize better with more lube than what I put on the .243 cases but I read somewhere that to much lube also is not good any truth to that?

You are correct, the large rod is for large rifle and pistol regular and magnum primers, the small one is for small rifle, pistol magnum and regular primers. I am sure the large rod can be purchased separately.

Thanks! I hate assuming things especially when it comes to stuff that go's bang!

I took a look online and you can in fact order just the large rod separately.

I'm still learning and have only made about 15-20 rounds so far. Yesterday I had some free time so I figured I'd get some bench time in. I prepped 75 cases for the .243 with no issue. Then I moved onto the 30-.06 and everything was going fine until it wasn't. I don't know how it happened but somehow I bent and broke the decapping pin. For some reason I have always struggled with the 30-.06. I don't know if the used die that I got was just crap and out of spec or what. Anyways after I broke it I started to do some reading and I am just going to purchase another expander decapping rod for the die. It's pretty cheap to replace and hopefully it helps me not struggle as much.

  6. I picked up a RCBS hand primer tool but it only came with the small primer Rod and not the large primer Rod. Also in the instructions it really doesn’t say when to use which one. I assume large Rod with large primer and small rod with small primer but I want to make sure it’s that simple?

  7. I also learned that the hard way many many years ago cutting up firewood with poison ivy on it. Ended up with a large rash across my stomach from carrying the log chunks. The oil went through several layers of clothes.

I also learned the hard way that poison ivy can grow on the ground and has a reddish color to it in the spring time. That mistake caused a huge rash and blister on my leg.

Now if I see poison ivy I just walk away.

I also made corned venison for last nights dinner. It's so good. Lately my roasts either get turned into corned venison or venison pastrami. Only downside is that you have to plan it out a week in advance.

Spreadsheets were made for this kind of application. The sorting abilities and the ease of storage and back-up make the data easy to keep track of. It's also easy to transfer existing pencil and paper data into the more formal electronic database.

And I use google docs so all my info is readily accessible no matter where I am.

  10. The 7mm-08 will probably be the next hunting rifle I buy. I currently use 30-.06 and there is nothing wrong with it but when I have a scratch to itch it will probably be the 7mm-08 that will do it. It will certainly be more enjoyable to shoot at the range that's for sure. I thought about the 6.5 Creedmoor as well but after seeing some less than stellar performance in person it's no longer on the list.

  11. I've only done it personally once. Bunch of us where curious about it so we tried it. Seemed like a lot of time and work for what you got so maybe that's why we have never done it again.

Inferior nothing. That was never said. And the fact is the ultimate hunt is taking down one of the world top game animals one on one on it’s own turf and accepting nothing less. Just what I implied and just what is 100% Fact.
myself and many others will only accept that challenge.

You are correct you never once said the word inferior. I don't know how else to say it but when someone besides yourself reads your posts in this thread its very obvious that your take on hunting is going one on one with the biggest most mature buck in the woods and that style of hunting is superior to any other style of hunting.

You heavily implied if not out right said that your style of hunting is superior to any other style of hunting that anyone does. Other members disagreed with you and you doubled down with your method your style of hunting is superior and anyone else that does not do it to your definition is not hunting.

The opposite of superior is inferior. So the assumption is if you say your style is superior and essentially the only true form of hunting then we the rest of the forum members are left to conclude that our way of hunting which is not your way of hunting is inferior.

Calling people out.  Let me ask you almighty. Have you ever located and hunted a top buck in your area and hunted that animal only until harvest or bust??  If not you have no clue on that feeling. Just as my statements say. That’s not calling any hunters out or throwing any kind of stones on their way of hunting. That’s states fact that they have no idea what it feels like to really hunt AN animal and not sit and wait for ANY animal. That’s 100% fact.

I am definitely not the almighty and I am pretty sure I have let that be known over the years. I am in the camp that hunting means a lot more to me than chasing a big buck. I have no problem with the way you or anyone else hunt's. This all started when you called big buck hunters superior and the only true hunters hunting to the definition of hunting. Keep in mind that's your definition of hunting.

And not that it matters but yes I have. I have two bucks on the wall. One is 130" that was dumb luck. Right place right time on opening day of the rifle season. Buck number 2 is 126" and I had him on camera before the season. Laid eyes on him twice during bow so I knew where he was hanging out and was pretty sure I knew exactly where he was bedding down at night. I changed the way I entered the woods that year so I wouldn't drag my scent across his travel route. Finally on Thanksgiving it all paid off when around 11am he got out of his bed and came in front of me at 60 yards.

Both those deer are my number 3 and 4 favorite bucks I have killed. My number 1 and number 2 deer are much much smaller. The first is a tiny 6 pointer that I shot when my daughter was in the stand with me. I believe she was 9 years old at the time and it was her 5th year sitting in a stand with me. My second favorite deer is a tiny fork that was my first bow kill after bow hunting for 3 seasons without being successful.

To this day I still have no great desire to only hunt big bucks. It's not my thing it's not the reason I hunt but according to you I am an inferior hunter.

True Words. But one will never feel what the word Hunting” really means until one finds, scouts, learns and hunts down one single mature whitetail buck one on one and go until they kill that one buck or bust. One will never know that feeling until it’s been earned. Not an easy task 99.9% of the time.

You see the funny thing is that we do the same exact thing. You don’t think we take kids and grandkids hunting?  You don’t think we kill does and they kill any buck they choose?  The fact is is that you or anyone else will know that feeling of accomplishment until one does it. Tracking a mature buck one on one and shoot him in its bed or coming out of that bed in the Adirondack snow would be the same exact feeling. We all get the enjoyment of the woods and all that goes with it. It’s just that some of us…That can do it…up our game and get a whole lot more then just sitting in the woods and waiting for the first legal deer to walk by. After harvesting 100’s of Whitetails there it makes a huge difference.   Very few have what it takes to harvest a mature whitetail from start to finish but those same few get all the enjoyment you get and a whole level more.

Just as you say. Hunters will hunt their way. And for some their way is the superior way. If you think hunting is to go sit in the woods and shoot any deer that walks by then you have no clue to what real hunting can be. Your happy to wait for Any deer while other choose to find one deer…. Which is a mature deer not so much a big antlered deer and that deer is in fact superior to the little spike or four pointer you are happy to take. That’s just a 100% fact. You hunt animals as a whole and other hunt animals one on one. And yes to be successful at that to any degree makes the Hunter just a superior as the animal they are pursuing. A mature whitetail buck is superior to all other Whitetails in so many ways.   And you throw my name in there yourself for your own reasons because if you were to pay attention to the post started the guy that killed that awesome buck hunts the same exact way.  I guess he is superior also.

Oh I see.  So you can downgrade a guy that hunts for the top class animals that takes the best of skills  but it’s wrong to bring in the other side that choose to shoot some of the lowest class animals in the woods that takes very little skills.  I love your rose colored glasses.   The fact is that there are both sides in hunting which is fine. But guys like you only call out the ones that choose to sit in the top class. I see.

Perhaps you should not cast the first, second or third stone if you do not like to get called out for calling people out.

I guess you can bow to the 1000’s of us that do not get out jollies from killing a dumbest deer in the woods and like to challenge ourselves with the best.                        We still have those like you and Wolc that are still at that level with the dumbest in the woods.  Enjoy that and enjoy looking at the pictures of the top bucks the other level continues to show you. Don’t feel bad though. Not everyone has what it takes.

1000's of real hunters like yourself that finds, scouts, learns and hunts down one single mature whitetail buck one on one and go until they kill that one buck or bust?

I'd be honored to meet each and every one of them so I could shake their hand and bow to their greatness!
