  1. Doe, after the ordeal last weekend, I decided this week that I was going to take the first deer this weekend that presented the opportunity. Well, besides a fawn. I have to say I am a little miffed that the bigger guy didnt step into my lane first, but I dont regret taking the shot at all. Its my first buck with the stick and string, and my first one from the ground. Doc, Yep and let me say, its great! Now I see why you guys that ground hunt do what you do. It felt just as, if not more exhilarating than any of my encounters with big bucks from a stand has. Ive actually been trying out stalking and still hunting this year by leaving my stand a little earlier on alot of days and hunting my way back out of the woods. Almost had a doe Friday evening by doing just that. I think Im getting hooked! Thanks everyone. Gotta get out to the garage and get him quartered and in the fridge before it gets warm out. The heart sammy was great last night. Sauteed it with onions, garlic, butter and red wine.
  2. The farm I hunt is torn up right now. Scrapes opening up everywhere! I found a ton of new ones this morning. The next few weeks are gonna be real good.I hope the bucks arent locked down for the first week of gun season. Would sure like to fill my other buck tag with a bruiser.
  3. Thanks guys, just got done skinning him out. Gonna get him cut up tonight and start grinding tomorrow! BTW, my daughter loved watching me skin him lol. Thought shed never stop asking questions!
  4. Thanks guys! The double throat patch is pretty cool. First one Ive seen in person.
  5. Yeah Buck, i shot tomorrows trophy today lol. Im happy with him, like Grow said, good eats! I wish that big boy that was with him would have been the one that stepped into the lane first, luck of the draw I guess.
  6. Just found my deer! Pics to come. Little 6 point.
  7. Hey Four Seasons, how long will that scent I bought from your buddy last? I wont be able to use it till the gun opener. Will it still be ok as long as it goes in the fridge?
  8. Yeah it was pretty intense. Never shot a deer from the ground before, let alone at 10 yards. I think ill be doing more ground hunting with my bow in the future.
  9. LOL Eddie, theres an ass for every seat...
  10. Oh hes not going far. the blood trail looked like that 3rd pic for 60 yards before we stopped when we spotted him bedded down.
  11. Thanks Grow! Im gonna give it another hour and head back out to find him. On another note, just looked out the window and 3 real nice does are feeding on the edge of the cut bean field across the street. They sure are moving today!
  12. Steve beat me to it. Yep, the one that says License. Dont need to sign the back tag. No problem Dave.
  13. You just sign the back of the license portion. Dont do anything with the actual tags until you kill the deer.
  14. Yep. Not even the same type of video. Only similarity is there were deer in both.
  15. Thanks guys! My daughter had a great time following the blood trail, though it was an easy one to follow. Heres a few tracking pics...
  16. I was in my stand this morning, planning on being in for just a few hours. It was beautiful out, cold, calm, crisp and I was enjoying the sound of the creek when the darn blackbirds started coming in. Those things drive me nuts! I decided after 20 mins or so of hearing them right above my head, that I was going to go do some still hunting and scouting instead. I lowered my bow down, got my pack on, removed my safety strap and hooked up to my prussik and stepped onto the ladder sticks. Just as I did that, I looked to my left and there were 2 bucks working a scrape line that goes right by my stand. Shoot! I knew I had to be quiet getting down, so I did my best not to make any mistakes. I got to the ground and got my pack off and unhooked my bow from my line and nocked an arrow. I looked over the brush and saw that they were headed my way. I moved down my entry trail to a point where it turns out and into the tractor lane, and hid behind the brush, watching and waiting for one of the deer to step into the lane I had. I could hear the deer walking and breathing, not 10 yards from me on the other side of the brush. He actually started freshening up a scrape and the other deer was with him. I knew one was a decent 2 1/2 and the other was a 1 1/2, and I could see the 2 1/2 walking behind the scraping 1 1/2, so I figured he would step into the lane first. I drew back and held just waiting, not paying attention to anything but my 20 yard pin. I saw the vitals in my sight, grunted and let the arrow fly. It nicked a branch and then thwack! I saw the deer that had stepped into the lane was the smaller one, and that the arrow had hit back due to the branch. He fell over and got back up and started coming right towards me. At about 6 feet, I stood up and yelled, causing him to change direction and he started off the way he came. I stepped out to look and the other buck, which was a nice 3 1/2 year old 8 I saw a week and a half ago was staring at the whole scene. As soon as he saw me and his little buddy caught up to him, he was off as well. I could see that my arrow had cut his belly open and caught the liver. Everything was hanging out as he ran away. The blood looks like someone painted it out there. My daughter and I tracked him down and found him bedded about 100 yards from where I shot him. I am letting him expire now and will go back out to get him in a couple of hours. Hes not the big one I was hoping for but its meat in the freezer, and after 2 years of no deer during bow season, it feels good to have that monkey off my back. Cant wait to have my heart sammy tonight!
