Tons of people talk about hunting on this site. I would say there are at least 30-40 main contributors. The common theme is that 90% of the time they talk about hunting-related things. You prefer to start nonsense time and time again.

Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster and if you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes also into you.

Don't take the bait. Good luck tomorrow and selling the mower.

  2. Out in 3G again. Action has been poor last few days. Only deer I have seen since Sunday was two does bedded in my neighbors yard last night. Sitting some food this am, hoping that I catch someone munching.

Heard a pack of coyotes yapping off in the distance. Not a great sign. Regardless, great to see another sunrise in the woods.

Good luck to all and a happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

  3. Lots of new great advice posted already. Subscribe to Randy Newberg and The Meateater YouTube channels. They have lots of great short vignettes to help get you started (field dressing, caping, quartering and butchering). Oriented more towards western hunting but applicable for Eastern whitetail as well.

Get on the DECs website for 3G and 3N. That will show you maps of public lands within a short drive. I would highly recommend learning the land yourself rather than relying on others for spots. It will take longer but you will learn more in the long run and be able to more easily apply what you have learned to other new spots as you expand.

PM me if you have any questions. Good luck.

.... Also, if you have room for a beer cooler in your apt you can definitely bring a quartered deer home and butcher it yourself in your kitchen (also assuming you have an understanding significant other). Differing opinions abound on processing yourself vs using a butcher. I highly recommend processing yourself if you have the time, but to each his own.

  4. I was the same boat as you. Solo hunter, no one in my family or friends hunted to learn from and using predominantly public land. Early season I learned to find funnel and pinch points between buck bedding and feeding areas. Once the rut started I stopped hunting bucks and looked more to pattern does. Use the wind to my advantage to find spots that a buck would check in on does. Hunt common doe travel points that a buck would likely cross to pickup a trail. Once regular season opened, find the nastiest thick stuff that a buck would hole up in for cover. Anticipate where pressure would come from and where they would try to escape. It's not easy and I still have a lot to learn.

Other advice I would give is put some does on the ground, if you haven't already. Gets you comfortable making a shot before the buck of a lifetime appears. The first shot I took at a buck was a mile off because of target panic.

    I hope this helps.

  5. So my opening day was a day from hell . It a long story I won't go into now but I can say that the 2 people I took with ruined my day and I will most likely never take someone out hunting with me again . They shot 2 deer and then tell me one had a stroke3 weeks ago and the other had a bad back . And the nice or stupid person I am had to try to drag out 2 big deer by myself. So I finally go the dam things out after these 2 watched me and all they could say was take my time. The day from hell started around 1 in the afternoon . And I just got home and showed and finally something to eat . Now I am going to bed so I can go by myself tomorrow.  The day fro. Hell is over for my . I just wish I wasn't  such a nice person
That is a bummer. I hope the karma pays off for you tomorrow and you get the deer of your dreams (and it runs straight to your car so you don't have to drag it).

  6. Phone died mid afternoon. That's a wrap on archery season for me (though I will continue with bow in regular season). Action kicked up around 2pm for about 30-45 minutes. Group of does getting harrassed by something in brush. Never saw it. Tried calling him out. No dice. Stopped by 3pm and then nada through sunset.

I am sitting out tomorrow while Yosemite Sam invades the public lands around me. I live too close to the city and these public lands get overrun by Yahoo's tomorrow (probably on line buying their shotgun tonight). Maybe hit it again Sunday PM.

Great season overall. Good luck and stay safe to all those heading out.
