  1. TheHornHunter, that's quite a transformation!

I had a guy call me today about a deer he shot that was in need of some repair work. It was a really cool triple beamed buck but was missing his left side at the base. Between that and a new cape, I warned him that it was probably more of an undertaking that he wanted to get himself into. Crappy deal, it was a really cool looking deer.

    Cool buck!

I was over to some family property yesterday checking cameras and had this big buck come across a cornfield. As he came up the bank to cross the road in front of me I noticed that one of his sides was a little funky with twisted looking tines.  He ran past my truck and I saw that one of his hind legs was deformed above the tarsal area (obviously shot last year) and he couldn't lower it at all. He had no problem jumping the ditch and making it up the steep bank. It's amazing how tough those things are...

Nice buck! Glad the coyotes didn't get him first. My wife shot a doe yesterday that we had to leave overnight and coyotes beat us to that one. First deer I've ever lost to them...

I was in a hallway conversation with a guy who hunts. He is a pretty typical hunter - has a bow, goes out a few times, and gun hunts a bit more. But he gets out there.

Anyhow he was telling me how does do not use scrapes. I know that’s clearly not true but there was no changing his mind based on his confidence level of his statement. He also told me the rut was on.

Definitely looking to get into a stand this PM. Away from this madness.

Does have been blowing up the tactacam I have on a scrape right now. They use them alot!

Do you prefer to cape the deer yourself for clients mounts or are most clients caping skills good enough it doesn’t add much more work to the mounting process?

I would MUCH rather skin it myself if given the option and definately wouldn't want someone that's inexperienced to try to do the delicate skinning on the face!  When someone drops off a head in a contractor bag, you never know what you will be getting. I prefer to take the neck down right to the atlas at the base of the skull. Must people get lazy with the skinning and tend to leave the entire neck attached, way too much meat on the hide or the brisket cut off short.

I think I’d just go euro or skull Plate rather than have 2 bucks mounted into one. What if you end up with a double throat patch or different coloring? Feels weird

Funny you mention this. I picked up a really nice spare this weekend that will probably get used on this other buck. It does have a cool double patch. I'm hoping to find him a different one and keep this one for myself to use on a deadhead I found.

What does it cost to replace a cape vs mount on the one it came on

It's costs me $125 per cape for tanning. It will cost him this plus the price of a new cape. Large, early season, shorter haired capes are the most sought after and expensive to replace. A cape of this size can easily go for $150-200 green. Should be able to get it for cheaper than that though.

Wow what an exciting hunt.  This guy was within 60-70yds cross wind but good wind for over an hour.  Thick and I never saw him.  But have photos coming my way and departing after dark.   It was close.  On my feet the whole time.  Pics coming and going.  Lol  and a split

He looks like another damn wall pedestal LOL
