  1. There's WAY more too it than most people realize. I don't do my own tanning now, but would if I ever tried to make a career out of it. Another thing that most hunters don't realize either is that there's a HUGE difference in a crappy deer head on the wall and a true quality deer mount.

No confirmation any of these died but the wide 8 disappeared after December. Me thinks he dead. He covered enough ground on our farm for me to know he roamed and likely on a wall somewhere.

One of the others made it through and I got a pic of him in June or July. Crappy pic but it’s him. Nothing since.

Unfortunately I saw all of them in person but not a shot to be had. The wide 8, I was halfway down the stand one evening. Him looking at me, me looking at him, and my bow on the ground. He didn’t even blow out of there. Just walked away. Like he knew. Showed up to same spot next morning in daylight which is the image you see. Was on a stand on 11/27 and could see those images being taken. 60 yards away. Ugh. What a day. Those two larger bucks had a knockdown drag out fight in front of me over a hot doe.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing a close up of one of those guys this season!

    5) Flyer.. He was a tougher buck to follow, I put a 52 acre piece of property i hunted for years on the back burner as my son was born and required a lot of extra hands on attention, about 1 mile from my 12 acre camp.. The Amish next door trespassed on it all the time.. And i was busy.. While busy.. A neighbor(relation to a member here) moved in and began hunting my stands. So i just backed out completely.. Let him have it, and never went back in.. At the same time.. The Amish packed up and moved out. turning their 105 acre property into a huge phenomenal sanctuary of overgrown ness..  This buck made it home.. After a few years of chasing him and only getting eyes on him, as he was very present at my camp still too, The new neighbor got him..  I'm guessing him to be 7.5yr or 8.5yr old based off history and pictures of this deer..

And yes I have the history in trail cam pics and sightings to prove all these bucks.. I did lose a few pics from transferring archives over the years..

But its fun to follow these brutes, they really teach you a lot if you follow what they do, and piece the puzzle together..

    That’s a little better.

Believe him to be 5.5 as I have matched set from 2020-21 season with the same split brows and estimated him at 3 then. Several night images of him over the years but first daytime image of him that I can recall close to season. He’s been a ghost to date in season.

I’ve mentioned numerous times to some lugnuts on a group chat here that this year is by far the worst year for trail cam buck action I’ve had since I started using cameras in (I think) 2009.  I mean it’s not even remotely close…

A friend has a cell cam on the piece I hunt in Livingston County and he’s had one or two fair (relative to the area) bucks and nothing like past years.

It’s going to be interesting to see how things shake out!

I think I first started running cameras in around 2008 as well. I've had some pretty slim picking years but this one is probably the worst. I do have several pretty nice bucks on camera, but not what I'm accustomed yo. Interestingly, I've got several buddies in the same area and they've got some really nice deer on camera this year.

  6. It's been the slowest summer on trailcam that I've ever had for big bucks.  It was to be expected as the local buck herd got slaughtered last fall. The other day I was looking through old pics reminiscing about some of the awesome deer that I've had history with over the past several years. I decided to post a few of them. This isn't the midwest by any means but most of these bucks are 5.5 to 6.5 years old with a couple being 7.5. It's almost unimaginable that a deer can evade a rifle bullet for that many seasons. All these bruisers are from Steuben County 8P/8R in areas that are far from being considered intensively managed...

Out of curiosity did you score mine? I put tape to it with my daughter as a fun thing to do because she insisted that it was bigger than the last one. Spoiler alert it was not bigger but it was closer than I thought it would have been.

I honestly don't remember if I did or not? Sorry.

Ive had them score a couple for me  but im to cheap to spend 10 bucks to put in book...lol

Joe does a fantastic job for them though. I truly belive many more large bucks are taken in ny than people realize. They just arent entered.. i know my neighbor has several that would make nysbbc hes 82 and not entering them, prolly show up in a few years as finds after the estate sale...

The entry fee into the state book just went up from $20 to $25...

  9. I'd probably enter one if it was over 150". Typically, if I score one for people who are not going to enter it or I know that it's not going to make it I just give them the gross score and not worry about the net (unless I enter it into our excel spreadsheet that does everything for you).

The only thing i don't like about the pedestals is the big bulge on the opposite side of the deer's neck below Jaw line. I know they have a huge muscle developed there, but it just seems extra large on every pedestal  I've seen.. Mine is the same way..

It's most prominent on these McKenzie /Dennis Behn forms. I actually rasped some of it off on this one at the customer's request.

Nah.  I'd have @WNY Bowhunterscore it when he mounted it.  Besides that I'd be content with showing it off to you guys, eating the meat from it, and hiding the mount in the basement.

I am an official scorer for NYSBBC. I score most of the deer that I mount for people but only a handful of taxidermy clients and other people actually end up putting them in the record books if they meet the minimums.
