  1. gotta say that whitetail hunting is def a puzzle and challenging and a lot of fun. And also NY has some GREAT fishing. Good luck
  2. and yet somehow the deer that Tfeathers shoots will go across her neighbors land and then onto her Ponderosa and get hit by a car full of out of state hunters etc...... lol. She def keeps it interesting!
  3. i still have 4 tags left too in case you need em! So stack em high
  4. yup we are relying on you today so get er done!
  5. its like fishing......the old say ...shouldve been here yesterday! - Hopefully he likes to take his dates to the same place and will be there again while your there! good luck
  6. i have a browning BLR in 30-06 but not the takedown. Just got it this year - its been the gun ive wanted for a while - love it.
  7. welcome in! And NY turkey and whitetail hunting is pretty good, but prob not quite the same experience as the mountains out west. But you can def have some good experiences here. And if you havent been to NY much before you will be surprised by the amount of farmland and open spaces. Everyone thinks NY is NYC and its just so different . - best of luck
  8. had that freak me out once. Me and my brother were leaving the woods in a spot in Lewis county. Right at dark right next to us this hair raising scream. Now we didnt think bigfoot .......we thought bobcat. Went back the next morn and there were three porcupines there in a pine tree. We thought maybe a bobcat was messing with them and go the quills then a older local guy we knew told us that porcupines will make a noise like that too. Never heard of such a thing. But it sure made the chills go! and guess what .........no bigfoot prints! lol
  9. When you change from the bow to a gun do you find yourself not being so tedious with your gear? Do you use less scent control and worry about the wind direction less? I find myself sometimes just going deer hunting by then. Course i am much more into bow hunting than the gun cause by then ive put a lot of hours in the stand. I just noticed that the other day, I dont seem to take the same care when gun hunting ..... maybe its because i dont feel i have to get the deer at 30 yards but in reality usually with the gun the shots are still mostly close and you still wan the deer to be as close as possible. Also it seems in gun season the deer are not as much in their natural state but more on the move or in complete caution and i feel like when i see deer it has less to do with me figuring out their pattern than it does with them being pushed around the area.
  10. thats just sooo wrong! lol. Were they out of jerky or even the rolling hotdogs????
  11. Find where the deer eat and where they go to bed and get between there with the rifle and there ya go! lol. If only it were that easy.... But the best part of hunting is trying to figure it out and then when you start seeing deer you know your doing something right. Deer are like most people they like to eat and sleep. Hunting is just putting yourself in the most likely places they will come through. Might sit there for 4 days and never see a deer or it might be 15 minutes. Enjoy the whole process and the rewards of getting the deer will come too. I have a hunting buddy that has only gotten one deer ever and he is already saying how he is not going to know what to do with himself once deer hunting season is over. He said he heard deer fighting, and saw a few but couldnt get a shot and had a great season. My most memorable thing about this season didnt even involve a deer, it was when I was sitting in the morning waiting for the fog to lift and a bald eagle appeared about 15 feet from me. That was awesome. Best tips i can give is def put the wind in your face, find their food source (which will change sometimes during season- acorns, clover field, corn, soybeans, apples), then find where they might tend to bed down and stay out of there til at least the end of season cause thats where they feel secure. Hunt the edges and the trails between and be mindful of your scent. Sounds like your doing a good job with that already. (huntstand is a nice app on phone to determine wind direction and where you scent might go ) Best of luck and enjoy being out there! Keep us posted on how you do.
  12. Possibly my favorite meal. Venison jalapeño brats with cheesy grits, eggs and a cornbread crumble.
  13. gotta tell ya its always that way for me. Saw 104 deer in bow season and have seen 3 in gun season.
  14. im taking a break til Sat morn. Havent seen hardly anything since gun opened. Sat morn get out with gun in 7F then sat afternoon planning on going to my spot in 7J which i can only hut with bow Hoping deer are in there as no one gun hunts this little spot. Once muzzleloader opens might take a couple extra days off. Have a spot where i dont hunt gun in 6S but no one muzzle hunts it and last i knew they also didnt cut the beanfield. Might be a good late season spot for bucks to get their bellies full. I have a hunting buddy out on a still hunt this morn at the fish and game club he is a member of and hoping to see text of BBD! My spots sure get less action every year in gun season. Such a big difference. Good luck to everyone out!
  15. Toe warmers are the deal. Sure help when sitting. Cause once feet are cold it's tough to stay still. Sometimes they aren't fun to walk on long though. Best thing to do is a lot of scouting. Sometimes you might not be seeing anything but there are deer nearby. If it's private land trail cams are a big help. But just seeing well used trails is great sign. And def monitor the wind. If ypur I'm a spot and your scent is going where u expect deer to come out they will for sure go around . Scent control on ypur clothes sure helps too. It's all part of the game and the puzzle to figure out where and when to hunt. And then be a little lucky too. Lol
  16. You need to have that last pic framed somewhere in your house or office or both. Awesome. And good thoughts for sure. I think of my dad evertime I land a trout. Miss him for sure. Those things will always stick with you , your dad and your son.
  17. Would also look on DEC website for areas that they give out a lot of doe permits. 6S,7F,7J. All good areas. Good luck
  18. The northern part of oneida county above oneida lake gets a lot of lake effect and it's northern zone and doe permits are tough to come by. Deer numbers are def less. There is some nice land and state land in the Florence area but deer numbers are def lower. If you hunt the southern end the deer and turkey numbers def are better. If you looking for hunting land I would suggest Madison county. Better hunting and a lot of farmland. Only issue is you compete to buy land from the Oneida nation as they own a LOT of land there. Might have to travel a little further but def worth it. Hamilton, Brookfield area is loaded with deer.
  19. I hunt some of oneida county. It is split with the north/south line in a lot of area. There is some good hunting for sure just depends on the specific location. I would say need to check property that you might look at for sign. And ask around to the neighbors in area. Too hard to generally say it's good or bad. I hunt the Augusta area in Oneida county and theres a good deer population. But there are def areas that are not as good. It's def a boots on the ground to find out for sure.
  20. Does still make me shake when they come to the stand. I can't imagine seeing that in the woods.
  21. Welcome in and hope you get that shotgun out
  22. Well that sucks casue I like the new ones with synthetic stock and cantilever barrel and setup for shoulder strap. Why would they change a reliable classic and cause new issues? Maybe that's one reason Remington is struggling too.
  23. You scare me much more than Bigfoot. Guess I can't trout fish now without blaze orange.
  24. And can't find this gun anywhere. Everything is sold out on backorder. Even none on gun broker. Looking for 21" cantilever barrel.
  25. That's also the scope I would put on it. I love the Bushnell circle X reticle. Perfect for a shotgun
