hunting without a truck how do you transport your deer
Robhuntandfish replied to Chef's topic in Deer Hunting
my buddy has a litttle chevy aveo with a hitch hauler on it. The deer might be bigger than the car! lol -
I scheduled a day a week for the first three weeks of season. But just cancelled my Monday and moved it to Tues next week for a 4 day weekend due to the heat. Too warm to hunt when its 80 degrees. Yes some deer still move but not as good in daylight as when its cooler. And I just dont like hunting as much when its that warm, doesnt seem right. People at the offices at work laugh cause I cancel vacation on nice warm days and take the cold fronts off. - But I plan my days out months in advance but dont really take any days off all summer and try to set myself up for the fall to have that time and flexibility. But...... i also do my dept schedule! lol

i have a crossbow and there is def a big difference. If archery season was opened up with all crossbow, would be hard not to always take the crossbow. It has a scope and i can shoot touching arrows out to 50 yards. I am pretty good with the bow and I shoot a lot but cant rival that range or accuracy I dont even try to with the compound. But its not even close for ease of use. No drawing or finding pins or correct form or holding the draw or even waiting to draw til the exact right moment and a quicker shot window ......put the crosshairs on and shoot. One I got last year with crossbow also only went 30 yards and fell over in a pile. But i really like the seasons the way they are set up and I will hunt them anyway i can but would be hard to leave that crossbow home

love the ladder stand but really have to find spots to tuck them in. If you have open hardwoods they are harder to conceal. But a lot more comfortable. I even have some that are 9ft high just really tucked in the brush. This pic is a 17ft and prob a typical setup for me. Took this pic in the expected shot opening . Stump in foreground is 16 yards.

Recovery rate with your bow (poll, but names not public)

lost one from Monday night. Looked for 7 hours with another guy. Had hair on the broadhead and just a little blood on fletches. Then found blood spots for trail on leaves and then like 5 spots like this pic. Then deer crossed its own trail twice I believe and then it just ended. Crawled on the ground looking for sign, did semi circles all around ........dunno ...... called the search on account of darkness last night. Have lost two bow hunting and the other was last year. Made a high shot and deer went across a road thru cattails so think it might have lived. Have lost one other deer to coyotes. Def not a good start to the season which I thought was starting off great by seeing 13 deer in two days. I guess this doe was unlucky #13. Went thru the briars and went thru the brambles went thru the woods where rabbits wouldnt go! My buddy couldnt even drive home for 20 minutes cause he was cramping up so bad. We sure gave it a hard try but thats gonna bother me the rest of the season for sure. -
spent 4 hours looking for doe today that i shot last eve. Me and a hunting buddy. Found just a little blood, then splotches of lots of blood and it just ended. Did semi circles all around it . Stuff is so thick cant see 15 yards. Going back to look again. so frustrated.

all i use is ladder stands. Saw thirteen deer over last two days. Had 6 in bow range. If you tuck them in well enough they work great. They are comfortable and I feel safer in them as well.

saw 13 deer between Sun and Mon. Shot a doe last night at last light and she went into some crazy thickness. So had to wait til this morn. Headed out in a few minutes to look. Had very little blood and she turned away as I shot. So dunno. But lots of action this weekend . Just a lot of little ones or out of range. Had two fawns running around stand Mon morn chasing each other. Too bad they werent 10 pointers! lol Hunted 6S and 7F . hope to find a deer or that I just grazed her. Arrow had lots of hair in the broadhead and very little blood on fletches. Found a sparse blood trail. will be on it like a dog in an hour. Wish me luck

So how was your opening few days of archery ?
Robhuntandfish replied to rob-c's topic in Bow Hunting
shot a doe last night just before dark. Gotta go hit blood trail in an hour or so. Went into work at 4:30 so leaving at 8:30 to look. Not a lot of blood, so a bit worried. Was quartered away and she turned as I shot. hoping for the best -
was at a buddy's house one time for the weekend and he works for anheiser busch and a Budweiser truck pulled up. Driver asked us if we wanted a 5 gallon bucket of slaw?? well of course we did! Side of slaw for all!!!

Breakfast sausage recipes?
Robhuntandfish replied to Gencountyzeek's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
i mix 6 lbs ground venison with 4 lbs of ground pork. Add in seasoning from an amish store for sage breakfast sausage or maple sausage and 1/2 a beer. Mix by hand and set over night and freeze into patties with freezer wrap in between and seal! (put in freezer for 2 hours on a tray before sealing to retain shape)- its my favorite Also make Jalepeno brats every year. - use onion and pepper sausage seasoning, dice up jalepenos and add in some green tabasco. then put in casings. -
got my plan -a new spot of dirt in the am. Been lots of does on that trail cam. Trying to drop an early freezer queen so I'm not tempted to shoot that 4/5 point and can wait for a big un! Got one I am eyeing on another piece of land that will spend some time on. I always hope to get an early doe for meat and then rest of season go after a good one, then once gun is on I just look to fill one more tag. Good luck everyone!
-
congrats an early deer ! good for you! and yes the first deer with bow was the toughest for me too. The more you draw and take the more cool and confident you get.
-
any opening day traditions that just must be done before hunting or it wouldnt be the same? I have a pancake breakfast at the house for me and a couple buddies for the gun opener. And opening day of trout season I have a budweiser longneck on the stream in remembrance of my Dad. Dont really have one for bow yet, except it officially ends lawn mowing! lol

yeah i get from some family members .......your like a deer whisperer.....your so lucky........ i remember being soaked in sweat this summer cutting brush and dragging in tree stands. Looking over topo maps and setting up lanes and plans. Luck always has something to do with it, but def make a lot of my "luck" with hard work. That I also enjoy. As well as the time just in the stand going over all the greatest "hits"!

Anyone else keep humorous cam shots?
Robhuntandfish replied to TurtleFace's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
was one of those days that a call from work had to be addressed - stupid work. -
im not big on the roasts either. Been just making them into steaks mostly. Want to try corning one this year though. Also like to cut them out about an inch thick into a flat steak and then cover them with bacon, celery, bbq sauce and roll them up and cook them - comes out great
