  1. if you have a lot of does or late season food, might bring him your way as well. Might wanna knock on some doors for that big boy! Fruit baskets, meat platters, cute puppies - give them whatever it takes to put up a stand! lol
  2. if he's 3.5 now, then you shoot him this fall, by the time he comes back from the taxidermist he will be 4.5 - perfect!
  3. just a thought Sethf11, if they arent showing up on that trail and you are going in there every 2 weeks are you pushing them off it? Maybe thats why the other trail behind the cam was so torn up? I use cams, but i put them off the actual trail I am expecting deer to travel into stand. I have seen them be spooked by the cams esp if there isnt farmers going thru etc. I try to leave cams out at least a month then get them midday and stay away from any bedding areas.
  4. hope you see him at 125 yards in rifle season!!!
  5. me and a couple of buddies in college used to make venison "helper" . couldnt afford to buy burger so we used some of the venison and stretched it........ had to save the $ for beer
  6. If i give them a name it tends to be nicer than what I want to call them, when they keep showing up on trailcams but not in person!
  7. lol, yeah those are the only two we named. But the par 5 buck name just fit perfect and it had a good story. I think backstraps is def at least the last name of all the deer I see for sure! "Stew" is one of my favorites too.
  8. thats some serious scouting to find out if the deer are eating beans or corn!
  9. Anyone name their deer? Have heard some say its silly or disrespectful. On our lease we do name one if it earns a name, its kinda a fun competition. 3 years ago we had one named "The Par 5 buck" cause my buddy shot at it 4 times on opening day and didn't get it, so must be it was a par 5!! It was a big 10 point with some stickers! Got shot a couple properties over later in season. Last year we had "the Dark Knight" cause no one ever saw it in the day light. - photo
  10. a guy I work with has a camp right on the border of it. He usually takes the week of the gun opener off to hunt. They usually have some action and get at least one deer. Hes never said he has seen any big bucks. He told me there used to be a ton of people there opening day/week but they usually only see a few people there now esp the last few years have mostly had the area they hunt to themselves. I have driven by it in bow season and it does look great and have seen a couple cars there but never packed and it is really big. Have thought about trying it myself for muzzleloader but never have gotten to it.
  11. Just wondering if anyone else does the DEC bow hunting survey? I got one in the mail one year and have done it every year for the last 3. I think its pretty interesting to look back at the end of the year and see how many deer i have seen in each area, the times etc. It asks for how many deer did you see, how many bucks/does, bear, yotes, etc... and the unit area and the time of day. I have always wondered if they use this info towards the deer count? cause if so this would cert skew the numbers since a lot of times see the same deer just on different days/sits. Last year saw 52 deer during bow season , the year before 76.
  12. got both DMP's for 6S and 7F and usually can get 2 more for 7F for the leftovers before gun season. The thing is I seem to see more bucks in my area than does, just not BIG bucks. Didnt get asked about an email address when I got my license as I heard they were gonna request that.
  13. does the cat hold a point on those before flushing?
  14. I grabbed my bow and came to full draw just seeing this pic!
  15. couldnt hardly see it , was too busy staring at that rack! lol
  16. if i were you i would forward my mail to the treestand starting oct 1!!!!
  17. nice buck! Is he running from the cam? I pulled my cam cards this weekend and nothing like that for sure. Good luck!!!
  18. I have the TC impact. I use 100 grains and a 245 lead in it. Shoots dead on at 100 yards. For one shot might be my most accurate gun. Also easy to clean. Havent had any problems with it at all.
  19. thanks , will check it out. I have some family in Indian lake so maybe will ask them about access there. Also eyeing the Lewis county area to try out as I see a lot of bears come out of there and am familiar with that area too. Have never seen a bear while hunting anywhere, have seen some cross the road in the adirondacks and seen a couple in lewis county in summer.
  20. going up to Indian lake area for the early bear season for a weekend. Mostly because its a chance to hunt before bow opens. But have always wanted to get a bear in NY just once. We are planning on fishing too every morn but then bear hunt in the afternoons. Any tips on how to find a bear? been up there before and have seen some sign but no luck. or anywhere else in NY that might be a good place to get my one NY bear? I think most people get them by running into them during deer season, but there must be an early bear season for a reason?
  21. Wow , treeguy you got it covered, sounds great. love to have options for different winds and trails!
  22. agree with Buckmaster. Once off the road in most areas not a lot of people. And a lot of people up there dont hunt til there is snow in gun season and seems even fewer bow hunters. Also tough to find a lot of deer in the big woods. Scouting in the summer and a lot of hiking can help. Get a topo print out of an area look for some acorns and start there.
  23. saw one of those survival shows on TV where a guy was attacked by coyotes. Am sure its really really rare. I had one come out and follow my exact trail across an open field one time like he was tracking me. I was in a treestand watching him in a huge field. He turned around about 80 yards away. Also had one like 70 yards away all hair bristled up when I was walking my dog. We backed away, didnt take time to see what he was gonna do. Glad my dog was on a leash though.
  24. from what i have seen, the rate is about $14 an acre in most places i have seen in CNY. But the best way is to ask around. Ask people you know if anyone owns any land. A lot of farms get asked but if you can catch the people that have like 40-80 acres a lot of them dont get asked by people. Best way is word of mouth for sure. Springtime is a great time to ask before season when people are outside. And often people are more open to bowhunting access than gun. Door to door locally and let them know you are a neighbor sure helps. I split a lease with 2 friends and it was word of mouth. A guy i know, but didnt realize he had that much land. We also are sure to give him some venison and a 12 pack after season too.
