  1. I really enjoy still hunting.. It is difficult to have the paitience to do it properly.. I have snuck through swamps and bedding areas in the big woods for hours.. I know there are deer in here somewhere.. step pause, step pause,glass,etc.... then you lose patience and crunch over to a better looking area and crash! , away he runs..lol. I have always said that the biggest asset to my hunting skills would be to improve my quick/jump shooting skills.. As a general rule I will not even shoot at a surprised jumped deer.. If I don't have the time to place my shot they get a pass..this has resulted in a lot of stories about the beautiful buck that I saw as he ran away..lol I believe with practice a person can become very proficient at jumping and shooting deer... One of the best still hunters I know was an old timer that was 90% deaf.( no idea how he was quiet). When a deer jumped up within 50yds of him it was dead.
  2. Off topic but they are a different country.. We have a camp in Quebec . It always reminds me of an old movie every time we stop at a service station.. Every one has a group of guys just hanging out shooting the breeze..Same ones every year..some probably retirement age but not all. Assuming a high welfare rate?
  3. Another vote for the timberland pro.. I am hard on boots and it is rare to get more than 6 months out of a pair.. the last few years I have been wearing the timberlands and they are comfortable and last close to a year before blowing out..
  4. How is the power going to get from your garage outlet to your furnace with all your breakers turned off? Have you checked to see if your furnace is hardwired or plugs into an outlet? Like Larry said ,it may work, not recommended . You will have to have main breaker off.. Breaker on that you are backfeeding . and the furnace breaker on This assumes that your garage outlet is feeding the same 1/2 panel that the furnace uses.
  5. I have had great sucessfull with the rage hypodermics... In my experience it has not been uncommon to break blades . Hitting ribs just right or a shoulder, I have had a few blades break. A couple did not pass through after shooting through the closest shoulder.. I hate to be that guy.. but...... Trying not to be overcritical...Seeing your hits, I think a little more tracking skill may be needed...Of course not knowing you or being on site, who knows....sometimes wierd stuff happens . Like everyone says , shoot what you have confidence in.. That is more important.. After using rage for years I switched to slick tricks for 1 deer a few years ago..Everybody seemed to really like them.. it was the hardest tracking job for 80 yds through the bramble that I had in years.. I switched back to Rages for the rest of the season. .lol
  6. I was amazed when I started hunting the park. There r stands everywhere. I used to avoid these spots,(not wanting to crowd someone's spot) but after a few years hunting there I noticed very little or no activity in them . If I wanted to hunt that area I would set up and hunt even if I was right next to another stand. I think I have only had one person actually come in and hunt a stand that I was crowding once.. I assume they either hunted it earlier or later in season. Trying to claim a spot with a stand is bs.. leaving a stand in the woods because you don't feel like trucking it out....., who cares.. you know the risks, some dbag could come along anytime and steal it ..
  7. I was sitting in my climber one afternoon when suddenly the top let loose. The next thing I know I am sitting on the base 30' in the air.. I may have pooped a little..lol.. I may have told this story before... I shot a buck on an evening hunt.. he was at the bottom of a cliff/ bank on the park. No way for me to get him out on my own.. I hiked out and got my buddies..it's dark now..After arriving at the drop we dropped a rope down and 2 of us used it as a guide and went down to the spot.. Blood and guts were there but no deer.. so we started tracking through the brush. We didn't go far and you could hear the bear in front of us dragging and or crunching on the deer, within 50 yds of us . At this point I pulled out my 3" knife and my friend asks what I'm going to do with that and I laughed and said it's better than punching the bear in the nose..lol..we tracked another 10 yds maybe , before we smartened up and got out of there.. the bear was not giving up his dinner...I went back the next day and collected my 9 points.. the bear managed to eat most of the deer.. I have a few other stories about that stupid bear too..lol
  8. Yeap, I had a 140-150 class buck 15' away with my bow.. I was sitting on a hump on the ground and he was on the other side of a cedar tree.. I remembered being so" scared" nervous that the arrow was rattling (sounded like a train to me)on the rest as I slowly pulled bow back.. he turned around and walked away..
  9. I am lucky and we have a core group of 4. Hunting partners and friends since childhood.. if one of us shoots a deer and it is a difficult drag, it is expected that we're all in..lol.. we are often a long ways from rd or vehicle and not always hunting together.. We will get our gear to the vehicle and call for help..This is one of the best parts of hunting. Esp...the retelling and the whining and complaining because someone had to shoot one 2 miles in and in the middle of a swamp on top of a mountain..lol....It isn't unusual to not get back out of the woods until after midnight.. We're not kids or elderly, but 45+ (act like 16)and I expect as the years go on it may take longer and longer.lol
  10. Lol, I had to be the 1st.. I haven't had a ticket in a while, but up here in Hicksville you used to be able to go to the DAs office and get reduction papers before the court date.
  11. Beer,beer!.. he'll I don't wanna see another beer till next year...lol HAPPY new years!
  12. Really.. That's the whole point , it's hunting not target practice. Improve your skills not the weapon.
  13. I think that would be awesome.. I don't shoot a recurve but I would learn!
  14. Nobody in my family hunted, so I didn't grow up with a strong hunting background... I did occasionally hunt small game when I was young with friends. 13-16 years old probably.. I never had any interest in shooting a deer.. I didn't think I had it in me to shoot such a beautiful animal.. A friend finally convinced me when I was around 20 to go deer hunting. That morning I shot my 1st deer with an old 32special.. While just like today I feel a little sad, I was absolutely hooked.. Deer hunting has evolved a lot for me. Being mentored by phenomenal hunters, albeit not always legal, I quickly learned the behavior of deer . Providing the lions share of the meat for our families.. I absolutely loved being in the woods , whether walking 10 miles in a day, sleeping in a mossy hollow in the warm fall sun, or sitting with my feet in the water on a hammock in the swamp. When I started it was all about #s and the amount of meat. Now I spend most of my time trying for that big buck. Shooting a couple does that give me easy shots and drags while waiting for the big guy. It's funny, some of the best parts of hunting do not involve shooting a deer. I could go into the woods and watch the sun come up or squirrels scurrying around the woods , but rarely do if I'm not hunting. Besides it's still cheaper than a therapist...lol
  15. I think a separate Xbox season after Archery is an ok compromise. This will help keep what little we have left of "traditional " archery intact.. Full inclusion would end up causing compound shooters to eventually dwindle in numbers to a # much like our true traditional hunters of today. If for no other reason than to keep 1 of our hunting traditions intact we need to not fully include xbows. Also,Imo , full inclusion could just be the start of full inclusion of firearms in the future. That would truly suck!
  16. This thread has definitelynd made me rethink my choice in which doe to shoot. Kinda like bass fishing I look at the 12-14" bass as the eaters all the rest are either too big or too small. Maybe the optimal doe would be 1.5 to 2.5 years old...
  17. I had a slam dunk spot. Killed close to 1/2 dozen 2 1/2 year old bucks on the same date around the same time for many years in a row.. I contributed this to the same doe coming into entrusted at the same time every year with a buck in tow.. The area dried up. I assume she died..Maybe this wasn't the case , but it seemed likely. This said, I usually try to kill the largest/oldest doe... I shot a huge doe last year, bigger than most bucks I have ever shot. I am sure she was over 180#s. I felt a little sad. She had survived many hunting seasons to get that large...
  18. Very sorry for your loss Buckmaster. Terrible that it happened earlier in life, but it would be hard to find a better way to go..
  19. I bought a millenium hang on and some lone wolf sticks 2 years ago... I thought it would be an awesome set-up . .. I just cannot get into using it though.. If the tree has limbs it is fairly quick to set . .. if the tree doesn't have any limbs it's even quicker, using a linesman belt. But in both circumstances , who needs the steps? If there is no limbs climber is quicker.. and if there are limbs it's either really easy to just climb the tree and set the stand. If not its a pain in the keaster to keep on moving the linesman belt around the limbs...lol I keep on hearing about other people loving their portable and sticks, but can't . Now I do enjoy it if I am going to set it and leave for multiple hunts.Nothing like just walking to your spot and climbing up and into stand.. just not for run and gun .
  20. I sort of agree with pushing a deer hit only in the muscle/bone.. . One of our group shot a nice buck years ago.. it was heavily quartering away. the shot was too far forward and managed to break a leg bone and leave a nasty wound across the shoulder and neck.. With snow on the ground 5 of us hounded that deer from 9 am: until finally finishing him off at last light... he traveled at least 5-6 miles crossing a 100yrd+ wide, swift tail race below a powerhouse twice... He was finally shot by a watcher we had setup in different spots throughout the day, trying to cut him off... We only saw the deer one other time until then. It did work out, but I am sure we could not have tracked him to his death without a finishing shot.. For the 1st few miles of the day there was lots of blood.. but it dwindled to very little. without snow we never could have continued tracking. to the best of my knowledge this is the only deer without a bullet or arrow through the body cavity that we have successfully got. If shot through the body cavity the deer is dead. following up properly should result in meat in the freezer Has anybody else been more sucessfull in tracking meat hit deer?
  21. After your 1st year I would have said beginners luck. 2nd year.. Well dang.. keep doing what your doing..lol... great job, nice deer!
  22. Lol.. Well I guess I'm just a tree hugging hiker this year..unless a nice buck shows up before the end of next Sunday . .1st year in 25 I have gone without a deer..Also 1st year I wasn't hungry either. I still have a deer vacuum packed in freezer I'm still working on . I do have a really itchy trigger finger though.. Who knows what may go down during the last weekend of mzl..
