Bow hunters could be a much more effective management tool, I pass between 18 and 25 deer a year with bow.. why idk I just like to watch them, then one day I'll shoot one when the mood strikes. The dec need more doe taken in an area and issue tags..they go unfilled, so they try 2 weeks to just get you to only use those tags..people rebell.. Omg I don't have choice.. point is if you shot the 1st doe that went by the numbers would be reduced.. by not participating you force the dec to consider other methods to fill tags be it gun ,crossbow,ext.. I believe the saying is ,cutting off your nose to spite your face.... Have you thought that the dec just tried to give the bowhunters a bonus.. greater opportunity for anterless harvest? They gave them 1st chance to help solve a problem and they declined.. just think if you asked someone for help.and they keep walking away.. eventually you look for other help.. You say they will bring in gun and it's all a conspiracy against bowhunters... I say they presented an opportunity for bow hunters to prove themselves effective and they said nope we don't want to.. so there goes the dec plan to allow bowhunting in closed areas with bow to control numbers there..because they won't shoot deer especially antlerless when asked.... so i guess l we will sharpshooter them or contraceptive....

1st find out who's it is. 2nd if it's neighbors meet them, they may be a nice guy/ girl who can watch your place, cut lawn for you in exchange for him hunting said stand ( helpful if your an absentee land owner) give them a trial year.. heck they may have a chainsaw or be a mechanic who fixes your truk when it won't start and you want to go home after a week of hunting amd it's a sunday. To many harsh people out there a friendly introduction and extending your hand is the best approach, you may make an agreement that your out on the weekend to hunt and he can't but he can hunt during the week. (I had that agreement with a neighbor when I 1st bought my land, he has since passed but he had become a great friend and let a haND planting and maintenance on trails and plowing driveway in winter, his and is wife's ashes are spread where he use to hunt on my land) You can take a friendly approach and possibly meet a person who has contacts that may be useful esp if they are year round residents. Or they just may end up being jerks and you cut tree down with stand in it..

Other states gave nearly a 50 % take by bow.. it's not ineffective ,bow hunters are just selective

Grow I don't see undo pressure or threats. Different areas have different regs. I get a doe tag for a doe only area when I get my land owners for mine..no chance of a second tag here or where I hunt. I then post it or know someone that hunts that area and sign it over to them..no waiting till nov For extras. They take between 2 and 4 doe out of my moms backyard every year. I don't hunt there but they guys that do are more than happy to have the tag and take some meat.. 2 guys just shoot the doe and donate them.. both main hunters had to watch a large buck for 2 weeks ,my uncle moved his stand because he watched it for two weeks and got it 1st day of buck in that area. Honestly I know what kind of person you are and the fact you hunt for meat. I just don't get your reasoning behind it except you can't shoot a buck then ,but neither can anyone else in that area. I'm sure you can get tags signed over to you so you can use them Oct 1.. if not and it's implemented again this year.pm me and I'll get one for your area and sign it over to you.

Grow, those units that have a 2 doe limit have excess tags that are never used.. you can get 2 extra and still have 2 tags for other units plus your either sex tag. Is a buck that important for you? My 1st deer as of late has always been a doe usually put on my muzzleloader /boe anterless tag.. leaving n my transferable doe tag in the same area for a guest.. remember when archery started Oct 15th.. take the first 2 weeks and shoot doe and help reduce the population. Where it needs it. Jelous of someone being able to shoot a buck in another area? Guess what they can't shoot one those 1st two weeks in a doe area either so the buck you've been watching is still there.perhaps earn a buck is better for you shoot a doe then kill a buck the same a free noon opening day.. I love your posts but I belive your over reacting to this doe only in areas that need reduction.

Bow hunters need to start filling doe tags early. There is no reason not to. They can be a very efficient means of controling deer numbers. I am guilty of passing doe early and waiting on that buck.everyone has at some point. If bowhunters killed more deer x bow would of never been an issue. I think they will have to adopt a earn a buck in those 2 week doe only areas..and you'll see doe hit the ground quick.

A good second nesting seems to have occured, small poults in Oct is from a 3rd or 4th nesting.. or good thing about the drought is a good hatch.. once the poults can fly they have a very good survival rate. About 10 days from hatching they can get up into trees and escape most predators..

Well I started on a 12ga. Was 12years old almost knocked me over, dad wanted to get me a 16 or 20, but I insisted in was gonna shoot a 12 ga cause he did. 30 plus years later I did buy a couple of 20 ga for my nephews to use. But they are only 9 and 10.

In the city is prolly rose dust or ddt... try putting some on. Few bugs.. one of my favorite things to do is go to estate sales and buy old powder mixes out to the garden sheds..lots of good stuff hides in there. Always get it cheap, Back to getting rid of it. If your not going to try to figure out what it is. Pour contents a little at a time into trash.. they never take buckets though they do have a hazardous pick up day for paint and such I believe..no pick up here.. we have dumps to take stuff to ..

Could be ddt, sevin, or a myriad of other white powders.. lime will bubble of you put lime away on it.. (acid)

You stated deer liked Brassica more,I assume that during deer season, clover is important spring and summer as well as winter..they will dig to get at it, brassica takes a lot of nutrients out of your soil and that adds to cost every year. I has a small plot get wiped out before season Last two years so I've gone with larger plots and or mixed clover or grain into them..

Hard mast looks bad dropping here, but I have friend who's beech are still loaded, apples are spotty, some are loaded some have few, that cold snap kept a lot of pollenators away. Few drooping early from stress lack of water. Brassica looks to be coming ok few storms we had ,got it germainated.. corn looks bad..needed rain be lucky if it gets to 3 ft this year..

You can legally kill it for causing damage but mist be buried immediately. From dec Web sitehttp://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/9358.html

My advice to you is make a few of those debris filled areas sanctuaries, if they are an acre or more 5 ro 10 is nice, more center to the property the better, that will do more for your hunting than any food plot ever could. Do not enter them ,shoot into them ,or track a wounded deer in daylight I them.. deer will find use and stay in them and your neighbors will push deer into them. A food plot in the logging road near by is a good stragedy. You will eventually get monster rubs and scrapes around the outside of the sanctuary and trails leading in... do not hunt these or "just get in the edge" My neighboring camps do not understand how we can take 18 to 20 deer off the property a year.. but we have a 30 acre sanctuary and them entering, leaving , driving to ,slamming cardoors, starting fires in their cabins all help push deer to where they know they will be safe. We simply wait them out when the deer leave to breed and eat . Eventually these ares will grow up and need to be rethickend, do this in winter by felling and hinge cutting. You can also plant thermal cover in an opening if it's been clear cut.

Blocking by piling tops and or dropping trees to limit access works well.

Encouraging private land being opened to general hunting
G-Man replied to Doc's topic in General Hunting
The dec can only regulate what the laws allow them to , this issue is out of their hands. To increase private land availability the state would have to enact laws the dec could then re gulate and enforce . Our dec is not a game comission although many think it is.. -
Encouraging private land being opened to general hunting

A big tax break and no liability would do it for me. I enjoy scouting and seeing other people get game I've scouted for, but I myself hunt less.and less. As it is now very rarely does someone ask to hunt and my name and address are very viable on the posted signs. Word in town is I'm a hard ass but the few that have asked I've given permission too and they have become good friends. Perhaps I'm in the minority but I just want to know where everyone is for safety and enjoyment of everyone. As for lack of access ,after opening day I rarely see any one in the local state lands . Perhaps the myth that every state land is an orange army keeps them away. I know a few that do very well on state land every year and never seem to have a problem with other hunters. . -
I always watch the meteor showers but here is a one day timed event for you to watch . For my fellow sky watchers.. .Friday night, Jul 29, at 22:10:38 there will be an Iridium Flare .The flash will be from Iridium satellite #61 and will have a magnitude of -8.0, about 100 times as bright as Venus! It will be at an altitude of 47° and an azimuth of 67° (ENE). If the sky is clear it will be an awesome sight!

I wouldn't remove any unless it's blocking a major trail..and only if it would funnel deer by my stand. I have planted many food plots and have realised I do not need as many as I thought. I have learned to truly access what my property is lacking in each season. I was lacking thermal cover for winter..spruce plantings have taken care of that. Spring I didn't need anything as I have a lot of browse and thickets from past logging. Summer I needed some food and water, fall I needed thick undisturbed cover. ( this was my access mentioned for deer ) turkey nesting and bugging habitat was lacking so several of my food plots have been let go to turn back into native grasses and weeds. Almost 10 acres of them. If you want a little sweet spot to hunt the logging roads wold do very well with minimal work and cost.. some lime fert and clover and a cereal grain or turnips . That debris that the loginng left will allow proper reforestation as seedlings are protected as well as a great bedding area and browse for 7 to 12 years.. you can't get that out of a plot without replanting and a lot of maintenance.
