  1. I'll go along with the magazine fur fish and game, go to a local sportsman show and find the trapping booth , talk to the guys there and. See if you can accompany one or invite them to try with you so you can learn. I was lucky my trapping course instructor agreed to go with me my 1st time out to set and showed me the sets I wanted to use ,and recomended set to use in other situations. Told me to call him if I needed help skinning them. I was luck my uncle was a taxidermist and had shown me how to skin , I sold a lot of raw furs until price dropped and I felt comfortable enough to practice on animals that were worthless. They taxidermy skinning really helped when I got unique animals like white raccoons. They sold much higher than fur prices would of brought as person buying them was able to mount them as all toes and claws were attached to hide. In my experiance many trappers are willing to show you as the craft is dying and they can always use a newbie to help in the fur shack..
  2. Went out this morning to listen, 1 bird off I n the do dance answers a neighbors rooster, then the rain hit... that's enough for the day..
  3. 200 lbs limit is equivalent to 65 lb compound bow I have no problem with it, not trying to launch a rocket... more than enough power for well placed shot
  4. Kind of steep Terain there why not try some state land in franklinville,(Harwood lake) another 30 min from bradford. Much easier walking. .or hanging bog in allegany county. .. maps of multiple use areas on Dec website.
  5. On our walk out we paced back off the area tom was strutting in and uncle is mad because he thought it was to far for her guns pattern.. 35.plus yards, apologies to her when it comes up at 30.. she doesn't seem to mind as she had a great time!
  6. Had a great morning. Got in a d set up by 525 am. As it got light silouettes of bird showed in the trees all around us. (Good to know roost areas) first bird gobbles 50 yards below us at 545 another 10 minutes goes by and tom gobbles again. He flies down at 553am filled by 5 other birds. Just to our left at 50 yards , still birds in the trees.. a couple of soft clicks and he comes up struttibg at 40 yards. One bird is still in front of us at 30 yards roosted,it's a hen that pitches out and lands 10 ft from us..the last bird pitches out and lands behind tom. The whole time the tom stays in strut, a few soft call and leaf scratching and he moves up to 30 yards.. a hen answers 200 yards behind us to out left.. 9 birds on the ground get to bickering jakes gobbling, hens purring and yelping tome keeps strutting back and forth in 10 ft area gobbling when he reaches each end of the line he's strutting.. I keep wondering when the shot will happen ... I can see her gun up and her uncle sitting with her 10 yards in front of me.. at 630 the birds start to move off.. still no shot nor does tom stop answering or drop out of strut,he just moves down the hill to the left with his 8 companions. 715 I call and see a jake peal off and go into strut headed back our way about 80 yards out.. the whole group turn and slowly the tom leads his group back in strut the whole time.. not gobbling but he's not letting the Jake get some where before him.. they dissapear behind a rise 50 yards out..I'm thinking great they will pop back out at 40 and come right in. Then nothing dead scilence, no spitting and drumming, can't hear them scratching leaves or soft calling.. 10 minutes go by.. and then sounds of something walking.... Damn thats a big fisher!!! Birds must of headed down hill to avoid it... We decide to move hoping the birds may of scattered from fisher a little.. down hill 50 yards and 40 yards to our left. Set up again I drop back 25 yards behind the hunter.. l et out a few lost yelps and bird hammers 20 yards in front of hunter just below ridge.. they shift and face the one brush free opening you know it going to pop up in.. a few more yelps bird hammers back again.. the pop up jumps a jake 15 yards to their left ,walking back and forth on a log.. no way to move or shift to get shot.. he gobbles 4 more times jumps off log and drops over ridge in 2 steps. (It's a steep hill) we try 15 more minutes, hunter tells us she's cold so we pack up at 830 and head back for some grub and a quick nap..
  7. Yes took him and his nephew out opening day, and took his niece today. She should.of had a good one at.614 al didn't let her shoot edge of rage he thought, then hour later had a jake at 15 yards and couldn't get gun up was facing another bird that was gobbling...
  8. You know he wrote and collaborated with miles davis as well... he spanned many kinds of music.. his death is a great loss to music in general.. even local bands covered his music..goo goo dolls for.example,. He created Sheena e, the time, and helped madonna, beyonce, wutang clan write and produce many songs... rip..
  9. Went out scouting this am, well listening to make sure birds are still using roost area when this group walked up to 10 -15 ft from me.. blue jeans and an iron horse saloon Hoody, who needs camo..
  10. Call a reputable forester, dec can recomended some. Tell them your looking to have a spot.cleared, they can make that a log.landing when done it's build able and cleared for free. There are thousands to be made from logging it you have the right size and kind of.. I've seen 5 acres make 38k and 100 acres only.make 16k.. a forester is the way to go they take a small % but they watch your back and your covered if damage is done and not fixed, roadways, ect..
  11. Storm the night before, and clouds will negate full moon, the thing I don't like about a full moon is turkeys will hop trees late after you put them to bed as they seem to stay up later with moon at sunset.. may move 50 to 75 yards..
  12. I know there is no biological reason behind it, but I like the noon cut off..
  13. Yep , our sloppy farming practices lead to a lot of mourning doves in the field.. of course they spook out when your walking in to a tree stand in the afternoon. Not sure if they tip off the deer or not.....lol
  14. Worked on my restoration project 1955 truck
  15. The whole reason it's a may 1st opener is to allow most breeding to be done before season.. I kind of wish they would do the same for deer and close season during rut.. bucks would get old fast...
  16. Well the roost spot is still active, 3 adult birds and 7 hens roosting there last 3 nights, went in this am and let them leave and then cleared a 150 yard 2 ft wide trail and cleared out a couple tree bases In prep for youth hunt , should help with the walk in and set up keeping things as quiet as possible..
  17. For gunseason Most of the time, gun ammo and pen.. For turkey, gun or xbow, 2 pot calls, locators, 3 strikers ,a box call, and a push box.and a pen
  18. First do not shoot i. Strut, oe too close to blow head apart, do not run and jump on bird or allow it to flop areund the woods losing feathers, if it does pick ip.all the feathers you. Can and sandwich between cardboard. Cardboard to put around tail top and bottom, to keep feathers from bending or breaking, wrap in. Newspapers, not plastic. Get to taxidermist fast, most will skin and give you the breast meat in my experiance. If bird is wet pat dry before wrapping, a cooler is good to have with cold packs in ot if traveling a distance.. Best advice is call taxidermist you plan on using to see what he recommends
  19. I think they do know and the state pushes for birds up in the Niagara escarpment. Habitat loss, more effecient farming practices and a blizard in 77 seems to be main reasons.I just don't see the state doing anything for habitat improvement for phesant, they are not native so maybe thats why they are content with put and take.. .
  20. I was gonna mention the amount of bird ov tv shot in strut, I was taught to put or wait till their head was up.. and I still don't shoot in strut to this day.
  21. You don't lose any breast meat with a bow,it just comes presliced.. with a gun pushing feathers and lead in. Yes you will..
  22. I agree but to a new hunter talk about being misled and lied too... I find that most upsetting
  23. I will run a field cultivator through them as soon as it dries a little hopefully beginning of next week, have to chop down rest of standing corn first. Saves plowing later and helps with weeds and moisture retention.. will disc a week before planting and again just before planting
