  1. The only problem is if you see birds from the road so has someone else... 3 weeks to go all it takes is 1 careless person putting boot on the ground and being a bit careless and the birds will shift or become silent.. imo turkey put up with less than deer do in a natural enviroment.
  2. It is very tight, back bored barrel and jugged choke, I have taken birds at 65 yards , and do not shoot closer than 30. It is also topped with a reddot sight. It was custom made 15 years ago. As a turkey shoot gun..have to blow out the center of the target.. Just got my nephews 20ga set for youth hunt. It hated 3 in shells and patterned very well with 2 3/4 number 6s.
  3. Mad calls mad a lot of aluminum calls and they work, are about 25 to 30 bucks.. mine sits in the back of a drawer along with 30 or so other calls.. My favorite is a ceramic call by knight and hale called old yeller.. I actually have 3 all different from different years..
  4. One tom can breed many hens, but I agree there are alot of hens to pull them away from.. good thing 80% of breeding is done in april. Numbers here have been lower than historian good old days in the 90's , but birds are here. Still severely dissapointed in shortening the season last fall as it'd the only way to keep hen numbers down a little (yes I target hens in the fall) 1 hen can lay 12 to 18 eggs.. doesn't take much to increase the population fast.. a good dry may is about it. We do keep the predators down through trapping and that helps a lot with preserving early nesting birds.
  5. As to why they put youth in bow during Columbus day weekend. 1. Bow use to start the 15th of October and this would of been weekend before (it was in the works before Oct 1st change) 2. There aren't any Columbus day parade,or school events that may take away possible participants. 3. Longer holiday weeks are usually family vacation time in today's society ,so participation would again be limited. That's all I found on that line of thought I have only seen 1 or 2 kids out that youth season but if it beings in any new non hunting kids under a mentor it's worth sharing the woods with them.
  6. Will never be the model t .. batteries are highly toxic, no range, and cost is what to high, can't work on them yourself. Honestly if a car is to become the model t of today it will probably be the elio. 84 mpg highway 56 city. Cost 6800.00 They can and do make effecient gas motors. As for electric, transformers are still causing problems today with pcbs, and the National grid is outdated and fragile. Electric may be fine for cities bit will not be the answer.. perhaps we should go to solar powered steam..
  7. Lucky to see this nest about 80ft up in a old growth white pine stand 3 great horned owl chick's and adult.. already so big..
  8. Some of my turkey pics.. something to brighten up a gloomy day..I love this grouse strutting ...
  9. I have a war of 1812 cemetery nearby, it's filled with oliver Hazzard perry's men. This is as far as they got the bodies before they started to putrify, so a cemetery was made. Make me think how many family's were waiting for their loved ones remains to come home one last time and never did..
  10. An average x bow powerstrove is 14 or 15 inches, a compound is 25 plus 10 inches is a huge difference.. and only using gDo you think you would like grain and velocity is not the entire formula, is not mathmatics. A longer power stroke imparts more energy into the shaft.. if you use comparable bow and crossbow draw weights the bow will win all the time.. there are 100 yard xbow shots on you tube and 250 yard compound shots.. the second advantage a bow has over xbow is multiple shot per minute.. , 3rd the bow is much quietier. X bows are effective but they are not a gun ..The kill percentage of bow and x bow are both between 7 amd 9 percent success depending on whose study you look at, but average harvest range remains the same.. they are by no means a super weapon.. or a long distance weapon. Or the matchlock and or flintlock would never have been invented. The revolutionary war would of been done using crossbows at 100 yards.. instead of a brown best musket at 50 to 80 yards..
  11. In fact the vertical bow will out distance a crossbow. It's how crossbow army's were held out of england.. it's a matter of kenitic encergy, longer stroke heavier arrow more distance over shorter stroke and lighter bolt.. remember a 200 lb pull crossbow is only equal to a 65 lb pull compound.. so e archers pull over 100lbs, English longbows are 150lbs pull
  12. I have a mission 400 as well with a leopold crossbow scope on it. And yes from a rest it's effective , and it drops your aiming almost 2 ft above for 60 yards..you don't really realism it as the extra crosshairs focus your attention, in the wood there is no way I would ever try that shot ,an open field maybe at a feeding relaxed head down in the grass.. maybe..
  13. Here is the problem, dec who ever one thinks is just game wardens ,will be heavily involved in this and massive funds will be used to maybe be recovered by company involved in spill will most.likely be some fine and settlement.. we really need to seperate the game and fishery from environmental pollution control..
  14. Some of you may enjoy this short film about the plight of the hell bender in appalacia https: //vimeo.com/wemayfly/thelastdragons Had to seperate the https:// for link to post... sorry
  15. Yep I've seen them up 8 inches by may 1st many times.
  16. I agree with that, can't tell you number of times someone I hunt with and I are out and they are showing off the buck they got at my place to someone, then they get up and the person they showed the photo to leans over and says well that's the last time they will be hunting your place huh.. I seriously have to explain to them that I don't have friends down to not shoot big deer. They then mutter under their breath that if someone shot a buck like that on their place they wouldn't have them back! That in a nut she'll is the cause of most hunting arguments, selfishness that someone else is going to get their game... it's mostly the reason behind posting land, limitations for guests to shoot, why a certain weapon isn't or shouldn't be allowed on their property or used at all. So yes hunting has become a small group event vs a large gathering of friends and family, the desire to protect what it theirs is the underlying theme
  17. Walking creeks, sword fights made out of snow fence stakes, burning ants with magnifying glasses, army men in the sand pit, camping back in the woods next to the pond, shooting frogs with bb guns, catching and painting shells on snapping turtles, shooting snapping turtles, fishing in the local farm ponds, fishing in the creek, trapping fox aND coon, football in the back yard, mud ball wars with the neighbors.. riding friends go karts, riding bikes everywhere, going to local arcade on a Sat and playing 1942, pacman, centipede, and other classic games. Building rafts out of old fence posts. Riding our horse. Playing on the farm equipment..
  18. I buy a stamp ever year and don't hunt ducks, stamp collectors love buying them. Especially when we were required to sign across the stamps. The are in fact migratory bird stamps and are required for hunting birds like woodcock as well. If you want to know who buys them just start a second stamp. Lea c e the duck stamp for what it is.. and as for having the hunters pay for everything we pretty much did during the 1900's
  19. The bird watchers can by the stamp now.. they arent...like many others that use areas bought and paid for by hunters , they love it... but don't want to pay for it or acknowledge that hunters dollars paid for it. I see the same with hikers that use snowmobile trails and bridges in county and state owned property ,that are paid for and maintained by clubs, one group was talking loud enough so we could hear them,I don't know why they allow snowmobiles on the hiking trails anyway.. boy they got an earful of education from us on who built and maintains the trails they use, a sheepish oh we didn't know was the final response from them.....
  20. Well I have a few fish getting up in age they will eat out of your hand, and I've been working on teaching them tricks.. they know one well teasing my nephews and avoiding their hooks..
  21. I load 204 ruger but don't have info for that bullet, usually Hornady is very fast at answering any questions..you may want to ask again
  22. You can follow a lot of this in archeology magazine online
  23. If your talking availability of ammo and possible taking of any and all game then you need nato rounds ....the 1st gun would be 30-06, .223, and .308, all military rounds..
