  1. Yep that barrel stick shine between trees and nice and close against a tree for a rest, a crossbow not so much.. hunting with one is much different than shooting one on a range.. rail or no rail.. I can definitely skinny up to a tree well with a gun and even a compound.. doesn't really work with a crossbow.
  2. Try taking thay tac15 in the woods and target shoot with it from your stands and try it off hand.. 3 shots from a bench does not make one experianced with one. As for my compound it will be used till I can't draw it anymore myself, but I will say if they legalized spears I would try those as well, anything is another tool to use and master.
  3. I had the same experiance, and obviously you use your experiance to know you need a bipod.. but the argument that it is easy is negated by you showing the need for a rest or bipod. Most people that use a gun may rest against a trunk of a tree , not really that easy with a crossbow, most do not hunt off the ground either, they may have hundreds put into climbing stands, or hang ons. To compare yourself and your knowledge against others is really not comparing apples to apples.I do not understand how someone cannot get a deer or two every year. I personally find it easy. Does that mean I look down on everyone else? No everyone does not have access to the property I do or the time. Though I understand the give them an inch they take a mile. It is still a bow,has limited range and kills by hemoraging.
  4. Muzzloader in bow is a possibility and I won't deny it, but the real reason these seasons are expanding is the need to make more deer.if 50k new crossbow hunter take 10 % more deer them the dec mandate will be met so no need to expand it they all become trophy hunters and take .1% then you will see dec push for more seasons.. it pretty simple, they are giving us the hunters a job to do.if we don't accomplish it they will keep trying things to get more hunters into seasons to up the take......
  5. I am assuming you have ladder stands with rails or home built stands. Unfortunately hanging, climbers, and stands built between multiple trunk trees don't have them. For me that makes 43 of 50 stands un usable for a rest.. I will give you a crossbow to use out of one and even the safety harness to wear as it will try to pull you out of the tree with its weight forward design. You admit you need a rest for a gun as off haND your a bad shot, so why not practice more off hand? Or do you do the safe thing and shorten your effective range off hand.. the crossbow will kill some deer at long distance but my compound has as well. Though the majority of hunters will kill under 30 yards on average with both.
  6. Fasteddie, you shot a crossbow 1x 40 yards . I assume it was off a bench..... hunting with one is a but different if you choose to hunt off the ground, still hunting, ect. My rifle can tack drive at 200 yards off a bench , only took 15 min to sight in, off hand I'm lucky to hit the target at 200 yards. ... Same will hold true for crossbow. I fell into the ease of shooting it, sighted in off a bench took it out hunting and it's unwieldy Ness cost me a shot a a very nice buck. 99% of all people against it seems have not tried it other than off a bench, or haven't tried it at all. Yes they are accurate if you can hold them steady while keeping the limbs clear of obstructions.
  7. They only can on certain days and some places limit you to amount you can buy.. again my cousin has an in so I luck out there.
  8. That's good in theory, but deer don't do what you expect, moving a bi pod tripod or mono pod takes movement and time 2 things you try to minimize, maybe if your in a blind, still hunting, tree stand hunting when deer comes from behind, it's a whole new game.. not as easy , you have to learn a whole way to hunt
  9. Yes they are like wooly already said, combo peacock call, pilliated wood pecker. I have also used a silent dog whistle, a elk bugle, and a horn off a 82 Honda moped . All to great success An owl call works as well but those are other options
  10. And yet people miss completely with a gun every year ,and it's the epitomizes the top technology available. Getting close and controling yourself is a hard thing to master, some never do or do in part, it's the rush called buck fever.... a gun hunter who decides to take the course and pick up a crossbow has to learn to master this .. 30 yards is still max for most shots with a crossbow.. that alone can be unnerving to a lot of peope.I know someone who is an nys Olympic shooter but shakes so bad with a bow on a deer he has never taken one, and stopped hunting with it. He's fine with a gun though.
  11. Fortunatly my cousin lives there and can bring a case or two when he comes up to see my great uncle about every other month, we visit and have one or two and I take the rest home.
  12. The local school here has been doing just this with out legislation ,they even have a tv show on the outdoor channel. Maybe you have heard of it crcs outdoors. Though the special youth seasons work to some extent they need to start at a younger age before they kids are sucked into the world of technology and sports....
  13. I know you know hunters that pick up that compound and practice a week before the season ... same thing maybe worse. plus you practice all before season and when it starts how many take the time to keep practicing ? you may not release a arrow till almost mid nov , considering if they dont practice from start of season and many do not , 40 daysor more with no practice?? the pick it up and good to go is a poor argument in todays set up of pins, peeps, kisserbuttons, and mechanical releases....
  14. Patterned mine years ago 8 or 9 different manufactures, shot sizes, and shell legnths. then loaded up on the shells that worked best (bought a couple hundred) a shot at 30 is about a 3 in hole in paper so 1 shot before season to make sure reddot hasnt been bumped. and good to go
  15. If i have to drink a beer ( much prefer liquor)...its Heady Topper by Alchemist brewery....
  16. If it was a on orange that bird is old 2003 according to above link.. 12 years or 13 depending on when it was caught... crazy
  17. Foubd this pretty damn interesting. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/taginfo.htm
  18. I thought a traditional bow and a compound were both considered vertical bows? <`shruggs`> Though they are bith vertical they are different, same as a long bow is different from a recurve, a wheeled compound, vs cam, each is a improvement over another technology. PA for example has a muzzleloader season but it is flintlock only, no scopes allowed, I primitive season,is just that a primitive season.. we have an archery season that allows all forms of bow, except the redheaded step child the crossbow. Which is still a string pushing a arrow from a bent bow ... I've said it before the only people that have a right to complain are the traditional recurve/long bow men. But they still continue to hunt with their implement of choice sise be side with the compound, yet compound hunters do not want to hunt side by side with a crossbow.. makes no sense. .... I even have a friend who hunts all of gun season with his bow because he likes it.. For those set against a crossbow , a question is have you ever shot one? And have you ever taken one in the woods in a hunting senairio? Have you heard the sound one makes when fired it's like a pop gun going off...never be able to get a second shot off in most circumstances. They arent the gun you believe them to be.... What's the old saying never judge someone till you walk a mile in their shoes....
  19. Anything is better than nothing, best if you can kill or remove what is there first plant wise
  20. Yep sat in the way to warm bow season myself this year.. barely had snow for muzzleloader. As for choosing wether to hint myself or with a kid, the kid wins hands down every time.. perhaps the pressure to get a deer yourself is to much for some. Personally I could careless, I'd rather get a youth involved on a long week ND that they are off. If you think it coddle them what's the difference with small game hunters in duck and goose hunters making noise. Stop being grumpy old men who walked up hill both ways to school in a blizzard, and take a kid out hunting on a nice holiday weekend!
  21. This survey was posted on this site,.. it was not a dec survey
  22. If you cared about the animal you hunt, you would shoot doe in high population areas, not wait for a chance at a big buck to walk by, yes the dec has a mandate to control population, and hunting is that tool, archers in general pass many deer waiting for a good buck. That is the real reason why crossbows are being pushed, numbers have to increase to incase the take for management purposes, if archers would have taken more anterless deer in the past there would be no reason to try and increase hunter numbers. I am guilty of it as well, the number of doe I passed to take a buck ,and I mean easy shots. But I have come to realism that I have a part to play in management, and I fill my anterless and doe tags in bow, I give the deer to friends that want it ,or I could donate it to a group, but I know enough people that will take a deer. Untill the mentality of archers change the dec will continental to make changes and as doc has said you will see muzzleloader season in or before bow season as numbers need to be taken to control population with less and less hunters participating every year. Personally an anterless only season for a year or two in high population areas followed by earn a buck would be much more effective, imagine no buck shot for 2 or 3 years and then to hunt that area all you have to do is shoot a doe 1st!! Dow would fall to the ground quick as book bucks would be much more common, like when deer season 1st open in the state, and the lucky buck was taken.
  23. You are a management tool, many will take a deer, with dwindling numbers if you are in a high population area you need to take doe, donate them if you have too! You lose the right to complain if seasons are changed to anterless only ,or x bow become included in all of archery, the dec is mandated by the state to control deer numbers , they have to use what is available to them if that doesn't work changes are made.. you as an individual have a role to play and Untill people's attitude changes about taking and donating to a person or group, the dec will keep making changes.. game management is more than making a hunter happy. He has to realism he/she becomes a tool for management.
