  1. Yep I have a friend that had a great mount was proud as heck of it, them he got a big 10 pt and won a contest so his mount was free, after he got 10 back (done by a good taxidermist) and put it on the wall he finally saw how bad 1ST mount was. He now keeps them in seperate rooms so they can't be seen together.
  2. I have several spots I can and do kill birds out of on a consistent basis. Woodsmanship and dumb. Luck help you find the spot, at that point calling is secondary.. the birds will be there regardless of calling or not
  3. It mostly.depends on how much work they took in, if they tan the hide themselves or send it out, if thay pay for priority tanning or just wait it out. I know several Part.time taxidermists and they quality is exceptional, on guy works strictly word of mouth and charges very little comparitivly but does exceptional work just only does 25 to 50 heads a year. Another is retired and still does some on the side because he enjoys it, his price is 2x or more of a normal taxidermist rate. But people still line up because his work is living art. Always look at a taxidermist work, I stay away from large shops as they show the masters work but thats not what your getting, instead you get a apprentices work. They take in a huge amount of work but I always have concerns of quality control! So there are many factors to how long it takes, but you can find great work and great turn around if you try.
  4. Unless you know your looking in a winter buck bedding area, I would bet you found a great doe spot, the buck may be 400 yards further away, winter scouting even in a park is nessary if not more nessary to find where the buck are when they lose their horns.. like I said I can show you beat trails and big beds but they are all from doe family groups, the bucks are a ways away in places I shed hunt, though they may end up in the same food source they take different trails together to them... she'd hunting is scouting lots oand lots of scouting
  5. The flock at tifft farm roost on high tension power towers.... guess they make do with what they have to.
  6. I have a couple like that, waiting for a dead head I found to be bug cleaned then I'm trying a whole skull lamp. Looks good I'm sure she will love it
  7. Most velvet bucks I've seen are fake velvet applied with static and glue, it's usually because the velvet rots quick and by time taxidermist gets it it much easier to strip and apply fake velvet , most people never know.. in cases of a road kill where hrs are not anywhere near hard it's a long possess of injection and pushing body fluids out of the developing horns Many examples are available off the net.. easier to do it this way and 99% of people will never know the difference.
  8. A basket on his back would say trapper to me, closer observation would of solved the issue....
  9. That nature preserve is probably well searched before you get to it , I know guys that do just that and start before the park even opens coming in from a creek or adjoining property, you best bet is to scout food sources after deer season and see what is using it.. I have 7 doe in my yard every day , none will ever leave a horn, but the standing corn across the street has yielded a spike so far and cam say bucks still have their horns.. just because you saw them in the fall someplace does not mean they winter there... that's the key where do they winter and feed
  10. Is the intrest even applicable for matching grants as it comes from general fund and not licence sales... it's a technicalit but one those lawyer's love... imo it's a very botched system
  11. Personally, I think apple should unlock the phone. A terrorist attack , both attackers are dead. Maybe more conspirators can be found. I'm against giving the government a program , but no reason foe apple to not unlock the phone... who's privacy is invaded they are both dead...
  12. The problem is hemlock is they are preferd winter food source and hard to get established, while I agree they do provide great winter cover and food getting them that big is the problem. Not to mention disease that affects them now
  13. Oak and hickory are very hard to get a step started in , and in old oak the bark is thick and the screw doesn't get into the wood only the bark...
  14. No it by no way makes up for lost money from yearly licence sales, the principal goes to the states coffers.. plus your gambling that they will have a season every year... they vote on that every year... don't think it's possible??? The safe act passed.....
  15. I would like a sHerman tank, a few mg44's and a Gatlin gun
  16. Invested and put in general account..
  17. What mike said.. intrest only to dec..
  18. I can understand your fustrations, but that is what high grading does when there is a large number of hunters 3 a side is shot leaving 4pt with no brows, soon you'll have monster 4 pt running around because they can't legally be shot. Imo leave all yearling bucks alone evendors if is a 10 pt... you always hear a spike can become a 10 pt. But isn't it better to have a 10 pt to start with? It will most likely be aq10 pt the following yer or bugger..no wait and see.. imo if you want a buck for meat shoot the spike and leave the 6 ,8 and 10 alone ..
  19. Make sure you cut as low to ground as possible to encourage root cloning, cutting a stump a foot or more out of the ground limits cloning. Under 6in stump works best.
  20. Well your last point is the biggest, the dec is not a game management organization it is an enviromental one. You cannot get the changes you want and nys needs until an ammendment is made to nys constitution giving the right to hunt and fish and creating a game management agency to run it. To many dollars are diverted to clean up air and or water or land,if they can prove it benifits wildlife Roberson Pittman funds are available. And cleaning up the enviroment always benifits wildlife. Comparing state that have game departments to nys is not comparing apples to apples.. that is the main reason why out hunting research and development and enforcement suffers....REMEMBER WE DO NOT HAVE A SEASON NEXT YEAR TILL THE LEGISLATORS VOTE YES TO IT...LIFETIME LICENSE OR NOT... why invest monies and personal to a sport that only exists year to year???
  21. Well the areas that have them were decided upon for 2 reasons, pressure from clubs, and hunter influx from large urban area, the deer population there is no where near what most of what upstate holds..
  22. As for running dogs for deer, crazy... land is too broken up to get permission from all owners that dogs may run a deer through, that is the biggest challenge when running coyotes, it's not ok cause they are hunting if the owners don't want them there you have no way to keep them off as they are loose and you don't shock them if they cross a property line... I can see people getting permission from a small landowner on either side of a privately well mana gf ed piece and running dogs chase those buck out onto small propetris to waiting hunters... I'd hate to see the legal issues from that.. because it works in another state, averge property size and use as well as hunter density vary greatly from state to state let alone county to county..
  23. Too much emphasis is put on calling by the media..of.course they want to sell their sponsors stuff. Set up ,lay of land, and roosting are glossed over. You may think your the best caller ever but if your set up wrong with a barrier between you and the bird you won't get him sitting in your blind waiting for him to come. It's a real shame woodmanship skills aren't stressed, as the most successful hunters use them with out ever knowing they are doing it as they learned from many trials and errors..
  24. I do a lot of aspen projects for grouse, clear cutting so cloning can take place, winterberry, highbush cranberry, blueberry have all been planted along with clumps of white spruce and fir for winter cover and roosting. For Phesant i like hedgerows, standing corn , grey doogwood, some spruce , and standing corn and fallow field in strips. Thus project is only in its second year and I'm interested to see what kind of hold over I get from 190 birds let go this year. Turkey, clearing limbs from field side to allow birds to fly up and roost, and cerial grains planted for fall, as well as fallow field in solid blocks of several acres mowed in beginning of July and left regrowth standing for bugging and nesting
  25. Good,as for doe only,it doesn't effect me but change it back, as for full inclusion of x bow legislation required doesn't come from dec, write and call your representatives!the Never cared for ar's but the people that have them seem to be happy with them so let them stay there...
