  1. I went out yesterday evening, but didn't see anything but an overwhelming amount of other archers. I forgot my pull rope and bow hanger, so I decided to hunt from the ground. Didn't end up seeing anything, but neither did anyone else who hunted the area. This was my first public land experience and my first time hunting in NY. I just PCS'd here in May. It was great to get out into the woods again, but with everything going on over the last few months getting settled into our new house and the million different projects that come along with that.....I just wasn't as prepared as I should've been.
  2. I hunted next to a lady that would harass me if she drove past me while I was hunting. Her driveway went up the hillside where I came into view. She would do everything from beep her horn or drive her side by side up and down the property line. The PA Game Commission took care of it for me. Never had another issue.
  3. It'll be nice to bow hunt an area where the leaves actually change in the fall...not turn brown, die and fall off in 2 days.
  4. I ended up with a brand called SubZ...it comes with a seat w/ a back to it. It's a 23qt that's been great for day trips and traveling. I've kept ice in it for 5-6 days.
  5. Yes...I have two little crescent scars on my eye brow from it. I had a herd of 40+ deer come across a hillside down in southwestern PA and the excitement got the best of me. Still to this day one of the craziest things I've ever witnessed in the woods.
  6. Just wanted to post a quick update. I made it down to the furniture factory. It’s only about 3 miles from my house. My boy caught this trout.
  7. Thanks for the tip. I’m off for the next 10 days, so I’m planning on trying to get down there and check it out.
  8. I have found little difference when using different brands of QUALITY ammo of the same grain. Some of your cheaper stuff is where I've seen some poor performance. For example, next time you come across a box of Remington core lokt, check out the bullet seating depths. They're typically all over the place. Anyone that reloads knows that an important part of the equation is consistency in the overall composition of your round. I'm not really knocking core lokt's as the green and yellow boxes have probably killed more big game than any other brand. If you're not looking for 1 inch groups at 100yrds and you're fine with "pie plate" accuracy at that distance, there's usually no issues there. Sorry to bring this thread back up.
  9. Awesome, thank you. We are ok with it being quiet in the winter. We got lucky with a couple good neighbors, but overall the people up here are so much nicer than down south.
  10. Thank you for the info Rob. I am definitely fine with bow only as I am an avid bow hunter. Being that we're almost neighbors, if you're ever looking for someone to tag along fishing let me know. I grew up stream fishing for trout in PA, but haven't done much lake fishing. I plan on doing some of both this summer. Thanks again.
  11. I just bought a house in Blossvale, so I'll be looking to hopefully start hunting in the area this year.
  12. You can also buy the permethrin in bulk on amazon. From there you can dilute it into the same ratio as the sawyers. I believe I paid 20 bucks for the jug and it'll last me for many years. I'm originally from western PA where you're COVERED in ticks after one walk in the woods.
  13. I started off with charcoal, then went to propane, now I just ordered a new Camp Chef Smokepro DLX. Hopefully it'll be here in time to get some smoke rolling next weekend.
  14. Just wanted to post a quick update to this thread. Thanks to all who have posted responses. I finished up training and I'm here in CNY and settled. I bought a house in Blossvale near Sylvan Beach area. So far I am really loving the area. I am going to start my search for a place to hunt, so that I can get some solid scouting/prep in before archery season starts.
  15. Thanks for the link. I'll remain a PA resident, so that would have me fall under resident pricing which is nice.
  16. Thank you. Regardless of the restrictions, I couldn't be happier to be coming up there. We are going to be closer to family in PA. We took a drive up and stayed over night earlier in the week and checked out the area. Beautiful place and it felt a lot like home. Our kids will definitely enjoy the outdoor activities there.
  17. Ok thanks for all the info. It is unfortunate that some of the rules are what they are, but I'm glad I asked.
  18. Just to make sure....There isn't anything I'm required to do when bringing my rifles, shotguns and flintlock up?
  19. This clears most of it up for me. Thank you. I wasn't sure if I needed a permit to just keep them in my home. I'm coming from NC, where guns live happily ever after. I'm from Pa originally, so I'll end up leaving everything except my non-scary long guns with relatives.
  20. Uncle Sam tells me where I go, so I don't have a choice in the matter.
  21. Hello all, I'm relocating to Rome in the spring and I have a lot of firearms. I've done some reading, but I'm still a little confused. Can I bring my handguns? (1 revolver, 2 semi-autos with 7 and 5rd magazines). No intentions of fighting to get a CCW, but wanting to keep them for home protection. Can I bring my AR's? I have 5 and 10 round magazines for them, but both were purchased after 2013. Is a Ruger semi-auto 22 with a replacement tactical stock considered an "assault rifle"? A lot of what I was reading didn't pertain to those relocating to the state. Thank you in advance for any help.
  22. Thanks everyone. Couldn't be happier about the assignment. I have no idea where I'm going to hunt yet, but I'll figure something out I guess. I'm not afraid to venture off the beaten path or knock on doors. Really the most excited to enjoy the area with my family.
  23. Hello all. I am being stationed in Rome this coming may. I am originally from Western PA and have spent some time in NY, but never hunted there. I've been hunting for going on 22 years now. I'm a big archery hunter and got into flintlock hunting the last few years. My family practically eats venison only all year round, so it's a way of life for us. Anyways, I'm really excited to get there and look forward to trying to get into the woods.
