  1. I have used the herters bench that's on sale at cabelas. Think its $100. It worked well for us topped with a led sled Correction will be on sale at Thanksgiving
  2. My 44 doesn't like hard cast yet My winter project is to guage cylanders, slug bore, perhaps ream cylanders . That will be a start.
  3. Nice encore. Have the same but I like the laminate furniture.
  4. Be prepared don't rush. The more you control the situation the less it affects you. Know your yardage ahead of time . Call the shot at what opening. Breath .. breath..Pick a spot then a spot within that spot. steady shot picture squeese only as the sights come on target stop squeezing but don't relax on trigger if picture wanders off . Let it happen. If it isnt right don't rush. If you concentrate on the mechanics you don't think about buck fever... mine usually happens after the shot. If I didn't get buck fever I would quit hunting.
  5. I have had 240 gr xtp fragment on ribs and a couple jacket separation. Understanding I'm not shooting rifle velocities I still would like to see the bullet stay together and exit. I haven't recovered a whole bullet yet. Thinking next year messing with swift a framed. Just hard to swallow $54 a box of 50.
  6. Autopsy update. .Entry looked like full deployment. Hit just under spine. Both lungs. One blade contacted spine passing through braking off on far side. Broad head passed through other side sticking out 6 inches or so . When the doe collapsed I could see the bolt on both sides. She raised up on her front throwing herself on the bolt breaking it. For all intent and purposes the broadhead performed perfectly. I couldn't honestly believe my beloved muzzy broadhead could have done better. Would have to wonder if the deer would not have run a ways before dying leaving a marginal blood trail. I don't think the 7/8 inch cutting radius would have caught the spine. The only failure here was me not guaging proper hold for distance. The doe was 32 yds . Knowing she was passed my 30 yd marker I opted to use 40 yard hash mark. I held mid chest in height when I should have held lower on heart. I would have to say the rage broad heads wide cutting surface saved the day.
  7. Rob c have you ever messed around with the 300 gr xtp in your gun .my sbhh shoots them well. I haven't killed with them yet. They are a handful pushed to the max
  8. Poly base layer over wool socks muck woody max boots. Make sure boots are dried after every trip with peet boot dryer remove insoles to dry. Bass pro mid weight base layers. Long sleeve t .sweatshirt fleece vest. Sweat pants .Scent lock winter jacket and pants carried to stand . Knit cap with fleece baklava . Fingerless gloves and pocket warmers. Good down to 20 f.Colder than that it's full blown gortex parka and bibs. And yes as I get older it is harder to stay warm . 5 hours on the stand yesterday in the wind was brutal. Windchill had to have had it in the teens.
  9. I have been looking for an encore black powder pistol barrel. They quit making them a while back and the few that will make them charge what a whole gun costs.
  10. Got it done on a medium size doe this morning. Passed on 3 small bucks and when she came sneaking through by herself I couldn't take it no more. She popped out past the tree use as a 30 yard marker held on with 40 yrd mark and spined her. Died before I could recock. I'm stoked rage opened her up large.
  11. Recently ... boneheaded move dosing off only to wake up to the rearview of my number 2 hit list buck walking out of my shooting lane. Grunted at him and he turned walked back up through the woods I dropped my call clanging on every step. He blew out of there giving me the whitetail salute. A few years ago I had a dandy 3.5 year old 11 pt come in to 35 yds. Hammer back ready to start squeezing off the shot and it hits me. I didn't reload my revolver after going in for lunch. 45 colt loads don't fit a 44 mag on and on it goes
  12. Great picture.... but is that baiting? Sorry couldn't help it . I think I'm spending to much time reading this stuff.
  13. Yes that's what I love about handgun hunting up close and personal puts the challenge back into hunting. Plus it let's me spend time with my precious...
  14. Who out there is hunting with a handgun as a primary hunting weapon. What platform are you using. What bullet and load. I'm probably going to hunt with my 480 super redhawk 7.5 barrel topped with an ultra dot. My load is a home cast hollowpoint dropping at 391 grains over 12.5 grains of hs6. Have a few others that need to get bloodied. My next choice will be a sbh 41 mag topped with 4x scope. 210 grain xtp over 20 grains of h110. My belt gun will be 5.5 sbh bisley in 45 colt 250 gr hornaday xtp.
  15. Dang I thought the thread title ment it was a political post.
  16. Hard to decide which one but for deer my sbhh in 44 mag gets some love 240 grain xtp over 21.5 grains of h110. But then again the rifle hasn't been out of the safe in more than a few years.
  17. I carried an 1187 20 gauge first year I tracked. There is no good way to carry a long gun in and out of heavey brush while handling a dog . I carried a glock 21 plus p load with a lazer after that. My choice in revolver would be a super Redhawks convertible 45 lc/45acp. Cheap practice with 45 acp .Enough energy with the 45 lc.Heavey for caliber hard cast bullet. Probably something 300 plus grains. Looking for a bullet with mass and energy to pass through dense fur break heavey bone end exit.
  18. I know it's an old post but I have to wonder what caliber did you end up with and what platform?
  19. 20 degrees 5 to 10 mph wind 6 inches of snow . Cold enough deer have to feed and most people cant hang.
