  1. Anyone have any reports of kills or action? I know it seems like most harvests happen in gun season but checking in. Nothing from me, just nice fresh scat while messing up deer opportunities.

I've seen people scrape the fat and put it in a game bag when skinning/gutting.

Thanks. I guessed it was something like that but just haven't seen it explicitly described.

bear's eating berries are delicious. Those eating dump or fish, not so much. Just about any meat is decent in sausage though. Just test for parasites or cook real well. Bear grease rendered from the fat is also highly sought after.

When do you harvest the fat? Do you scrape it off when skinning? I have seen some videos on skinning or gutting bears but it never shows fat harvest. Should I get one, I'd like to keep that fat.

  4. In NY scent lures are legal as is calling. You could try either or both. I know one fellow on another forum who has drawn bears in with scent lures near NJ border but yes it's low %.

Only bear I have seen was by chance and I bolted as soon as I snapped a twig and it saw me.

The Ultimate Guide to Black Bear Hunting by Douglas Boze has a chapter on calling which he likes a lot. He hunts in WA state.

  5. Generally, how does it all go for bears as the cold comes?

For example, the deer rut is fading/over and food again resumes its primary importance.

But with bear, it's simply food all fall, right? Find the food, find the bears....

    Thanks for any insight.

@blackbeltbill has that place memorized. He may be willing to offer some pointers…

That would be much appreciated. I didn't make it out due to family and other issues. Was hoping to do it before gun season but am hitting my friend's land a little farther northwest this weekend.

  7. Yep, going for early bear isn't a high odds hunt, I know, even with those cam pics. Scent lures, calling would be fun to try out. It's about trying for a bear and not worrying about blowing a much higher percentage deer opportunity.

  8. Early Bear is less than a month away in NY. Anyone planning to do it? I've got a buddy who's sent me trail cam pics of some bears. It's all about food, right? I think the berry sources are gone or will be by then.

  9. I am stuck out on Long Island these days of lockdown and we've had some severe windstorms. I am wondering about the fallen trees on the bear hunting land I have been to - I would imagine that bears would use the underside as dens in the winter.

Would they also sleep in them during the seasons? Might these be spots to look for bears going to or coming from?
