  4. Hey guys, I'm looking for a decent priced hunting land lease for 3 hunters. One of the hunter's teaches hunters safety with the DEC. He is our mentor, so he teaches us about being ethical, polite, and safe during out hunts. We are looking for land 2-3 hours away from NYC. I'm also in the market of buying a small parcel of similar distance. Maybe around 5-20 acers, nothing to big. You can reply here or at [email protected] for serious offers. 10. Hi, I'm semi-disabled (basically, can't hunt myself at this time) and I'm looking for how to obtain some deer meat/bones/organs for nutrition purposes. (Hopefully I'll be able to hunt myself someday after I resolve some of my health issues.) I've been searching around and all I can find is info on venison donations for the "hungry". I wouldn't want to take food away from those who can't afford it - I have financial resources, just don't know how to get the deer. I see there is a refrigerated truck in Southold where you can pick up a whole deer but I'm not sure I'd be able to transport it to a processor as I just have a regular car. What I can do is pick up processed meat from a processor, if someone is willing to donate it. I'm also interested in the organs. From what I understand hunters remove this right away after killing a deer. Not sure what you do with it, but I would like to get some. I'm in Nassau but would drive anywhere in Suffolk. Any leads? Thanks in advance, and I'm a total newbie at everything hunting so sorry for any naivete!

  14. Hello everyone! This past weekend, I was in the woods doing a little walking around with another hunting buddy, and stumbled upon a Massive Rub. (take a look at the pic). During the early and mid bow season, i snapped about 300 pictures of various 4 pters, 6 ptrs, and 2 really impressive 8 ptrs. (see second pic). So far this gun season, we have taken 3 small bucks (2 spikes, and 1 4 ptr) off the property. (new hunters wanted their first deer, i know i know let em grow....) The other big deer are NO WHERE to be seen. MY guess is that this rub that i found is from the big boy, and he is pushing everything else off the property. The rub is located in a Hard-to-get-to spot deep in the woods overlooking a tight funnel, with a stream about 200 yards away. My question is: How do I go about finding this guy? what are some of your tactics in getting him to show up? I've been in the woods every weekend for the past 8 weeks, and havent confirmed seeing him except on the camera in August. The third pic is right in front of where the rub is. Just passed the first row of trees, is a stream that runs through the border of my property. HELP PLEASE!
  15. This is my second year bowhunting and have yet to take a buck in gun (4 years) or bow. Today I was out deer hunting and about 10:30 3 doe stroll through so I took a shot at one and missed, luckily found my arrow. 25 yrds 15 minutes later a 4 point comes through from the direction that the 3 doe's went to, took a shot again and missed. Keep in mind I am in my treestand and its the first time I have shot an arrow from my treestand. This is the third time I have missed this year. The first time was from the ground at about 30 yards. Last year I did well during practice, and the season was amazing, I was hooked, so much different and better than gun. This year I had to get new fletchings which were a different style. The bowyer told me that they would not have much effect if any on a 30 yard shot. I also had to use my other broadheads which are 125 gr., however I did not realize this until after I sighted/tuned the bow. It was sighted with 100 gr. field tips. So I am here looking for some knowledge from my fellow bowhunters, and my question is how much will the added 25 gr. effect a 30 yard shot? Was it the broadheads that through the shot off? Was it the new fletchings, was it both? Or, was it my close encounter jitters? And one more question, does the angle that im shooting (from treestand) have any effect on the flight of the arrow? Thanks to all who answer.
  16. Here is DEC's harvest forecast for whitetail during the 2016 hunting season: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/deerforecastr4.pdf Interesting info... I doubt my WMU, 4L will ever have doe tags, and it's interesting to read that DEC is concerned by possible "misuse" of the 4J doe tags.
  17. That little fox in the background....
  18. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before. I'm guessing something is broken at the base of the antler or skull for this to happen? Is this a permanent thing or can it grow normal after shedding his antlers this year?
  19. Does anyone frequently use, or have frequent experience with screw-in steps to get up trees and set stands? I'm curious to know if you have a best method to determine how many steps you'll need, how far to space them, and how to position them on a tree so that they make for easy step-downs onto a tree stand. I had one hell of a time on Saturday setting up a stand, and it took way longer than I had wanted to be at the location. I used a small piece of PVC to help with turning the step, and pre-drilled for ease of turning...

  21. Public Comments Accepted Through February 8 The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is now accepting public comment on proposed regulation changes that would allow the use of big bore air rifles as a legal implement for taking big game at certain times and places in New York, beginning in the fall 2016 hunting seasons, Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. DEC will accept written public comment on the proposed rule changes through February 8, 2016. DEC is proposing to amend the regulations found within Title 6 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (6 NYCRR section 180.3) to allow the use of certain air-powered firearms for hunting big game. Air-powered rifles that meet certain specifications, termed "big bore air rifles," have adequate downrange energy to effectively harvest New York big game species. In 2010, DEC amended these regulations to allow the use of air-powered firearms for hunting small game. "The popularity of air-powered firearms is growing, largely because of technological advancements," said Acting Commissioner Seggos. "These modern firearms produce the force necessary to efficiently harvest big game animals. In addition, because big bore air rifles are not as loud as conventional rifles or shotguns, allowing their use may make hunting more acceptable in locations with higher human densities, including areas where deer are overabundant." Big bore air rifles are available commercially, and they fire bullets of sufficient size at sufficient velocities to safely and efficiently harvest big game. These big bore air rifles would only be allowed for taking big game where other types of rifles are allowed to be used for taking big game. Use of rifles for big game hunting is allowed in most New York counties. Please visit the Rifle, Shotgun, and Bow Areas webpage on DEC's website for more information. Details of the proposed rule can be viewed in the December 23 publication of the New York State Register and on DEC's website under Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources Proposed, Emergency and recently adopted regulations - http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/34113.html#p1s1803 Citizens who wish to make formal public comments through February 8 may do so by sending an email to: [email protected] (include "air rifle regulations" in the subject line) or by writing to: Bryan L. Swift, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Bureau of Wildlife, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754.
  22. Are you an outdoorsman? Do you hunt frequently? Do you experience the struggles of lifting your deer, elk, bear, or other kill onto your truck, ATV, or Gator? We’d like to interest you in our hunting hoist. My sons and I also had these problems. I created a solution with my portable hoist system. Our simple to use design allows flexibility to your hunt that other hoists can’t compare to. Simply attach our hoist to a tree, tie up the feet, crank the line, and you’re on your way! Check out what other customers had to say at http://huntersportablehoist.webs.com/testimonials where you can also find easy to view tutorials. For more information, please contact me, James Owen, at [email protected].

  24. 2016-17 Hunting Season Dates are on the attached PDF. I started to add these dates to the calendar on the site as well. Eventually would like to list them all out below. Not sure why the DEC insists on a PDF file. Broke out the images below for reference as well. Hunting Season PDF - huntseasons16.pdf huntseasons16.pdf
