Hello fellow LI Hunters, I see there is no active online community for Long Island Hunters, if you know of one please tell me! This post may help like minded googlers find their way. I'm Shaun, I'm 30, and I live in Suffolk and I'm a beginner to intermediate experienced small game public land hunter. Before I came to NY, I was hunting Small Game and Wild Hogs in Florida and we had a very active public land community that got together for hunts or just became online hunter friends who shared their experiences. I hunted for Shotgun Deer a few times but no luck so I'm a real newbie Deer hunter and I only have a crossbow so Archery's out for me right now. I guess I'm just looking to meet some people, either here online or IRL if we fancy one another's company. I'm a lonely hunter as I lost my mentor when I was very young. So I'm a research hound - I'm a techie guy and I learn everything I can from hunting shows, magazines, books, online communities and friends, youtube, google earth, etc. So this'll be my first year hunting in Suffolk Public Land, primarily for Small Game - Squirrels, Rabbits, Woodcock, Pheasant, possibly Turkey. I'd love to hook up with some folks to show me some Waterfowl or Geese Hunting, or even Deer or introduce me to Archery. As I'm new to the lands anyone looking for a buddy to explore and learn some woods with would be cool. I also know the deal with Small Game guys and Archery guys preferring to hunt apart, so I hope not to step on any toes and hope the check station would distribute parking spots accordingly. Hey everyone I'm knew to the sport and looking to learn as much as I can. I was suppost to go up to sterling with a friend of a friend but the guy had been dodging me. So I've decided that I will head to sterling or Stewart forest by my self this Monday 10/09/17 and wing it. Maybe walk around with my bow and see if get lucky. Worst case scenario I get good excerside out of it. If anyone could help out either teaming up or letting me know where to go I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anybody knows of a butcher and the prices so I can take my deer when I harvest one. I live in NYC even tho I would love to see my neighbors faces as I carry a deer from my car to the 5th fl of my building I don't think it will work out. thanks in advance for any help and for taking the time to read my post

Last year was the first double buck year for me ever. One bow, one rifle... Few pics, better pics coming soon of the mounts.... I had one turn one way and one the other over both windows in the cabin...

Hey everyone. Looking to join a hunting club in light of the upcoming start of the 2017-2018 deer season. I live in Elmira and work a lot, so ideally I would like to hunt as close to where I live as possible. I almost exclusively bowhunt, but will use a rifle periodically. A new regulation that prohibits hunting or trapping of free-ranging Eurasian boars in New York State was formally adopted state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The regulation is designed to ensure maximum effectiveness of DEC’s statewide eradication efforts. “Enacting a statewide regulation was important to support DEC’s ongoing work to remove this invasive species from the state and to ensure that it does not become established in the wild anywhere in New York,” said Commissioner Martens. “Eurasian boars are a great threat to natural resources, agricultural interests, and private property and public safety wherever they occur and DEC will continue to work to protect these resources and remove wild boars from the state.” Eurasian boars were brought to North America centuries ago and wild populations numbering in the millions are now present across much of the southern U.S. In recent years, wild boar populations have been appearing in more northern states too, often as a result of escapes from enclosed shooting facilities that offer “wild boar hunts.” Governor Cuomo signed legislation on October 21, 2013, which immediately prohibited the importation, breeding or introduction to the wild of any Eurasian boars. Furthermore, the law prohibits possession, sale, transport or marketing of live Eurasian boars as of September 1, 2015. The new law was an essential step in the state’s efforts to prevent Eurasian boars from becoming established in the wild. However, there are already small numbers of Eurasian boars on the landscape in New York. Since 2000, wild boars have been reported in many counties across the state, and breeding in the wild has been confirmed in at least six counties (Tioga, Cortland, Onondaga, Clinton, Sullivan and Delaware) in recent years. DEC is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services program to remove any Eurasian boars that are reported in New York. To date, more than 150 animals have been captured and destroyed. However, eradication is expensive, time consuming and requires a great deal of manpower. “Hunters have offered to assist our efforts by hunting for boars wherever they occur, but experience has shown this to be counter-productive,” Martens said. “As long as swine may be pursued by hunters, there is a potential conflict with our eradication efforts. Eurasian boars often join together to form a ‘sounder,’ the name for a group of pigs that can number 20 or more individuals. Shooting individual boars as opportunities arise is ineffective as an eradication method often causes the remaining animals to disperse and be more difficult to remove.” Hunters pursuing wild boars in locations where baited traps have been established by DEC or USDA can also undermine these costly and labor-intensive capture efforts. Shooting may remove one or two animals, but the rest of the sounder scatters and rarely comes back together as a group, thereby hampering eradication efforts. In addition to prohibiting take of free-ranging swine by hunters, the new regulation prohibits anyone from disturbing traps set for wild boars or otherwise interfering with Eurasian boar eradication activities. Hunting wild boar is still allowed at enclosed hunting preserves until September 1, 2015. The regulation does provide necessary exceptions for state and federal wildlife agencies, law enforcement agencies, and others who are authorized by DEC to take Eurasian boar to alleviate nuisance, property damage, or threats to public health or welfare. Anyone who observes a Eurasian boar (dead or alive) in the wild in New York should report it as soon as possible to the nearest DEC regional wildlife office or to: [email protected] and include “Eurasian boar” in the subject line. Because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish a domestic pig, pot belly pig or Eurasian boar based solely on a description, reporting of all free-roaming swine is encouraged. Please report the number of animals seen, whether any of them were piglets, the date, and the exact location (county, town, distance and direction from an intersection, nearest landmark, etc.). Photographs of the animals are especially helpful, so please try to get a picture and include it with your report. I was wondering how many of you plant and effectively use "kill Plots" on your hunting lands. I have 47 acres in the lower Catskills that I picked up last year. I have to do quite a bit of land management as much of the woods around my fields had been logged about 10 years back and is now an overgrown mess that's great for deer cover but impossible to navigate and see more than 10 yards through. On the bright side the top of the mountain is great and my entire lower field is corn which is farmer managed and my middle and top field is hay. I will be keeping a lot of the under brush for bedding and travel cover but want to cut trails through it to help redirect deer travel. My other thought was to make a few 50-100 yard wide by 100-300 yard long staging or kill plots in and near the cover to catch the deer before they make their way to the big fields at night. After dark the hay fields are absolutely covered in does. My question is how many have used this tactic and what are good seeds to plant, being that I have corn and hay would a late season browse like turnips and radishes be best or an all around option like clovers and oats?

This is my second year bowhunting and have yet to take a buck in gun (4 years) or bow. Today I was out deer hunting and about 10:30 3 doe stroll through so I took a shot at one and missed, luckily found my arrow. 25 yrds 15 minutes later a 4 point comes through from the direction that the 3 doe's went to, took a shot again and missed. Keep in mind I am in my treestand and its the first time I have shot an arrow from my treestand. This is the third time I have missed this year. The first time was from the ground at about 30 yards. Last year I did well during practice, and the season was amazing, I was hooked, so much different and better than gun. This year I had to get new fletchings which were a different style. The bowyer told me that they would not have much effect if any on a 30 yard shot. I also had to use my other broadheads which are 125 gr., however I did not realize this until after I sighted/tuned the bow. It was sighted with 100 gr. field tips. So I am here looking for some knowledge from my fellow bowhunters, and my question is how much will the added 25 gr. effect a 30 yard shot? Was it the broadheads that through the shot off? Was it the new fletchings, was it both? Or, was it my close encounter jitters? And one more question, does the angle that im shooting (from treestand) have any effect on the flight of the arrow? All right, so I'm new to hunting Turkey. I've spent the last 2 weekends up in the Adirondacks looking for them. I see these things all along Rte 28 during my numerous drives up to the Adirondacks, but I've never seen them on hikes and certainly never during any of my hunts up there. So what I am missing here? As I understand it (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), the general idea behind fall turkey hunting is to find a big group of them, break them and then hide out and ambush them as they regroup. I've heard bringing a dog along to help with the break up is sometimes helpful. I've heard calls are sometimes used as well, but they seem to be more relied upon in the spring season, when they aren't as grouped up. 1) So where do I look for Turkeys, especially in an area as big as the ADK's? I've spent some time going down old (no longer active) logging/hunting roads and trails. Sometimes I head off the trail to move through some brush in an attempt to flush anything out of hiding. 2) Is the weather and foliage optimal for fall turkey hunting? I've noticed that the weather this time of year is a bit warmer than usual. As well the foliage has only just now started to turn. In fact, when I was moving through the woods today, a lot of the foliage was not only still on the trees but still very green, making it very hard to see very far in any direction. With all the racket I make stepping on dead leaves, I feel like I'm bumping and scaring away any potential game well before I see them. 3) Should I be using a Turkey call, even for the fall season? 4) Do Turkey like moving in the rain? It's been fairly wet this weekend so far, almost a constant drizzle. Is hunting for Turkey in the rain worth it? I know some game species prefer to say put in rainy weather. 5) Is ambush or calling pretty much the only way to hunt Turkey? I've heard that Turkey have amazing eyesight as well as hearing. So head-to-toe camo and stealth seem to be essential. I just have a hard time sitting still in some place like the ADK's. It's a big area, and wildlife isn't nearly as abundant here as some people think it is. If I don't pick the right spot, I could be doing a whole lot of sitting without seeing a single animal (I know from experience). Anyways, those are just a few questions/issues I was trying to work through. I figure if some more experience Turkey hunters on this site offered some feedback, we might be able to get a helpful dialogue going for myself and other hunters new to Turkey.

I've recently been testing some fixed blades after shooting mechanical broad heads for the past three seasons. Ulmer Edges were my go to until they were discontinued. Last season I tried out a rage which I was very unimpressed with, mine prematurely opened on a nice buck resulting in a non lethal poor hit and my friend had an extremely poor blood trail due to lack of penetration. I did have a quick ethical kill with a shwacker but I want to get away from mechanical heads. Recently I have shot Slick trick Vipertricks, Slick trick Mags, Ramcats, and DRTs. The DRT hit 4 inches low at 20 out of a pretty well tuned bow. The mags are close but not so forgiving, any shooter error shows, but the Vipers are dead on out to 40 (all I tested so far). Anybody have any field experience with the vipers? I can't find as much online about them as other heads.

I have a one year old Chesapeake Bay I rescued a month ago to train for duck hunting. I have experience with the breed and know they can be a handful at times so I took on the project expecting just that a project. I never expected her to catch on so quickly, shes got everything down and passed her gun shyness test with flying colors. I am confident she will be in the duck blind with me this fall however, shes got one problem I am not sure how to break. She has such a high prey drive she will break and chase just about anything that moves. Last week a deer and rabbit, today the neighbors cat and it is impossible to call her off. Once she gets it in her mind shes going, shes gone. My neighbor also raises pheasants and now that she knows the scent and look of a real bird (now using a dead mallard hen for scent recognition) she immediately breaks from the house to his pheasant coop and scares the living hell out of them. I am happy shes got the drive but I can't have her bothering my neighbors. Also the non target chasing is obviously a no go while hunting. Is my best bet to have her wear an e collar and give her a zap when she wont come off and goes after non target animals. As for the neighbors pheasants I am at a loss what to do there. I don't want to discourage her bird drive. Any advice on the subject is appreciated.
