  3. Hello, to all my fellow squirrel hunters. I have been tryingto think of a way to get this going so here it is. Squirrel Competition Rules This will be a 5 round competition. Rounds will begin Oct 1, 2013. each round is to start the firswt day of the month and end the last day of that month. Therefore we will have a round for October, November, December, January, and the Finals will be held in February. if you would like to enter please log into facebook and find my page. you can search Bucks and Broads Hunting to find us. Like the page, send me a message with all your info, only info needed will be Name, Hunting region, DOB(year only), what firearm you are going to use. If you are unable to use facebook, please include the info in a message to me on this site and i will relay it to set it up for contest. To have an eligable kill- it must be shown in a picture with a tape measure showing an overall length from tip of nose to tip of tail. each squirrel will be placed flat on its belly to be measured. You must also have the date and time of each kill posted in a comment with the picture so we can judge it. Any picture without date/time and location or hunting area will not count to overall score. Each Squirrel will count as 2 points, the length will be the tie breaker. Remember NY Reg says only 6 squirrel bag limit per day. A Bonus of 1 point will be added for anyone who fills a bag limit in a day. If yo0u post more than 1 squirrel please have it marked in picture somewhere the number of the squirrel. Red squirrel is not protected and will count twords a total but they will only count as 1 point each. After I have a list of all parties interested I will create an Excel spreadsheet and have each hunters name on it to show a rolling total of squirrels, points and so on. I would like to keep this at a 20 team max. If anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me. Dont forget to look our page up on facebook we need more like to get the word out about this and make it happen. Thanks again.
  4. 2013-14 SPORTING LICENSES AVAILABLE BEGINNING AUGUST 12, 2013 Deer Management Permits, Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Licenses Will Be Available For Purchase The 2013-2014 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) can be purchased beginning Monday, August 12, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens today announced. “New York has some of the best hunting, trapping and fishing opportunities in the nation, and we encourage people to purchase a license that will allow them to take advantage of all our state has to offer,” said Commissioner Martens. “Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is committed to providing outdoor enthusiasts with an abundance of recreational opportunities to enjoy throughout the year. DEC is continually working to develop and manage new programs to enhance the outdoor experience while protecting the state’s natural resources, and purchasing a sporting license is a great way to access a variety of outdoor opportunities.” The NY Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-of-state sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. Under this initiative, New York is streamlining the purchase of hunting and fishing licensing and reducing license fees, improving fishing access at various sites across the state, stocking as much as 900,000 pounds of fish, expanding fishing clinics and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. The reduced fees become effective February 1, 2014. Licenses and permits can be purchased at one of DEC’s 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses can also be ordered by telephone or by visiting the DEC website (www.dec.ny.gov). The 2013-2014 sporting licenses are valid beginning October 1, 2013. The new Hunting & Trapping and Freshwater Fishing regulation guides are available at all license issuing outlets as well as from the DEC website. To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Cuomo signed legislation last year expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to give all people an opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. New York's sport fishing industry generates an estimated $1.8 billion in economic activity annually, supporting nearly 17,000 jobs. DEC’s Automated Licensing System (DECALS) is a computerized system for issuing sporting licenses and tracking license sales and revenues. DECALS may also be used for donations to the Habitat Access Stamp Program, Venison Donation Coalition, Conservation Fund and the Trail Maintenance Program. The DECALS Call Center at (1-866-933-2257) is accessible from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday from August 12 to October 12 for questions regarding license purchases. Regular Call Center weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will resume on October 14. License buyers should have the following items ready when applying: complete name and address information, customer ID number if you have it, proof of residency information (driver's license number or non-driver's ID number with a valid NYS address to qualify for a resident license), and, if purchasing by phone or internet, a credit card and card expiration date. Hunting license purchases require individuals to provide proof of a hunting education certification or a copy of a previous license, if this information is not already contained in their DECALS file. Sales of all sporting licenses are deposited into the Conservation Fund, which is used to manage New York’s fish and wildlife populations and protect and manage wildlife habitat. Important updates for 2013-2014 · Youth Firearms Deer Season will occur over Columbus Day weekend, October 12-14, 2013. For more information, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/46245.html. · New legislation allows the use of rifles for big game hunting in Ontario and Wayne counties, until October 1, 2015. See Rifle, Shotgun, and Bow Areas on DEC’s website (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/35010.html) for other counties where rifles can be used. · The Deer Management Focus Area will continue in central Tompkins County to assist communities in the Ithaca area with the burden of overabundant deer populations (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/82382.html). · Mandatory antler restrictions (3 points on one side minimum) remain in effect in WMUs 3A, 3C, 3H, 3J, 3K, 4G, 4O, 4P, 4R, 4S, and 4W during all seasons for all hunters 17 years and older (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27663.html). Additional details are listed in the 2013-2014 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide, which is available at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/37136.html or at any license sales agent. The Freshwater Fishing Regulations Guide has been restructured for 2013 to make it easier for anglers to find the information they need. Special regulations now follow immediately after the statewide fishing regulations in the front of the guide, and information for major resources (e.g., Great Lakes) can now be found immediately after the regional regulations for the DEC region(s) where they are located. Deer Management Permits With an exceptionally mild winter in 2011/12 and below average winter conditions in most of the state again in 2012/13, deer populations have grown despite generally increasing antlerless harvests the past few years. Accordingly, DEC will be issuing approximately 18 percent more Deer Management Permits (DMPs; tags for antlerless deer) this year. DEC issues DMPs to control antlerless harvest and move the deer population closer toward objective levels in each Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). DMPs will be available at all license issuing outlets and can also be obtained by phone, internet or mail, from August 12 through close of business October 1, 2013. DMPs are issued through a random selection process at the point of sale, and customers who are selected for DMPs will receive their permits immediately. For planning purposes, review the 2013 chances of selection for DMPs in each WMU at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html. Charts of the chances of selection are also available at License Issuing Agent locations, or on the DMP Hotline at 1-866-472-4332. Chances of getting a DMP remain the same throughout the application period - hunters do not need to rush to apply for a DMP on the first day of sale. If a significant number of DMPs are still available in a WMU after October 1, leftover DMP sales will commence on November 1, and continue on a first-come/first-serve basis until the end of the hunting season or until all DMPs have been issued in the WMU. Additionally, Bonus DMPs will be available in the bowhunting-only WMUs 3S, 4J, and 8C and in WMUs 1C. For information about Bonus DMPs, see http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/10001.html. An outline on how DMP targets are set and permits are issued is available on DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/47743.html. Hunters are reminded that DMPs are only valid for antlerless deer in the WMU specified on the permit. To learn more about what to expect for deer hunting throughout the state this fall, see Deer Hunting Season Forecasts at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/37304.html. Be a Mentor to a New Hunter, Trapper or Angler The Youth Firearms Deer Hunt was a success in 2012 and will continue to provide opportunities for adult hunters to share their expertise and pass on important traditions to young hunters. DEC also provides special hunting opportunities for junior hunters by offering youth hunts for waterfowl, wild turkey, and pheasants. Learn more about opportunities for junior hunters and trappers at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/52495.html or find details and a permission form in the 2013-2014 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide. Anglers are encouraged to grow the sport of fishing, by taking someone new fishing in 2013. Recent legislation now allows angler groups to conduct an unlimited number of free sportfishing clinics and no longer require direct DEC involvement. The requirement for a fishing license is waived for participants in these events. For more information, go to http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/89811.html. Fish the Great Lakes Fishing in New York’s Great Lakes and tributaries is better than it ever has been and the new I FISH NY Guide to Great Lakes Fishing will provide all the information an angler needs to fish these phenomenal resources. A copy of the guide is available on the DEC website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/glfishing.pdf or may be requested by emailing DEC at [email protected] with “Great Lakes Fishing Map” in the subject line. Copies are also available at all DEC regional offices. Contribute Via Habitat Stamps, Trail Supporter Patch, or Donation Directly to Support the Conservation Fund or the Venison Donation Program DEC encourages all outdoor enthusiasts to consider purchasing a Habitat/Access Stamp and/or a Trail Supporter Patch. These stamps and patches support DEC’s efforts to conserve habitat and increase public access for fishing and wildlife-related recreation and maintain non-motorized trails. Buying a $5 stamp or patch or donating directly to the Conservation Fund is a way to help conserve New York’s rich wildlife heritage and enhance outdoor recreation in the state. Additionally, anyone - not just hunters and anglers - can help feed the hungry by contributing to the Venison Donation Program at all license issuing outlets. Individuals should inform the license sales agent if they are interested in making a donation of $1 or more to support the program. Since 1999, the Venison Donation Coalition has paid for the processing of more than 330 tons of highly nutritious venison, the equivalent of 2.8 million meals served. For more information about the Venison Donation Coalition program, visit DEC’s website. This post has been promoted to an article
  5. Finally an article favoring hunters who donate venison to NYS hunger programs. http://www.observertoday.com/page/content.detail/id/586516/Schumer-seeks-tax-deductions-for-hunters-who-donate-game.html?nav=5047
  6. Hunters took approximately 243,000 deer (124,000 antlerless deer and 119,000 adult bucks) during the 2012-13 hunting seasons, about 6 percent more than were taken the previous year. Increases were most pronounced in the Northern Zone where total take (30,840) increased 15 percent from 2011. In the Southern Zone, the adult buck take (about 98,570) increased 6 percent and the antlerless take (110,900) increased 5 percent from 2011. The 2012 harvest reflects deer populations that are greater than desired levels in many parts of New York. Increased take of antlerless deer will be necessary in 2013. Full PDF Report (Click Here)

  11. I would like to know where in NYS, and which counties, can I hunt for wild boar/swine, and coyotes? I understand that the only license I need is my small game. Do I need special D.E.C. permission also, and do I catalog them with the D.E.C.? I prefer to hunt with a rifle (30/30), if that helps you to answer my question.

  14. Columbus Day weekend, October 6-8, marked the state’s first youth firearms deer hunt and reports from the field indicate the youth deer hunt was a success for many junior hunters as they learned about New York’s rich deer hunting tradition under the watchful eyes of experienced mentors, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. “The youth deer hunt is a great opportunity for the next generation of New York hunters and is an important step in preserving our hunting heritage while maintaining our ability to manage deer through hunting in the future,” said Commissioner Martens. “We received enthusiastic feedback from parents and excited young hunters who took part of the Columbus Day weekend. These experiences demonstrate the great value of providing this unique opportunity for junior hunters.” During the youth deer hunt, junior hunters (ages 14-15) with a big game hunting license were eligible to take one deer of either sex with a firearm when properly accompanied by a licensed and experienced adult. The number of Junior Hunting license holders who were eligible to participate at least one day of the youth hunt was 12,753. To date, junior hunters have reported taking 486 deer, though hunters have 7 days to report their kill. DEC anticipates the final harvest estimate for the youth deer hunt will be higher after all reports are in and the harvest is calculated. DEC Environmental Conservation Officers and wildlife staff were afield throughout the weekend, monitoring hunter activity and talking with bowhunters, small game and turkey hunters, and junior hunters about their experience during the youth deer hunt. Reports from the junior hunters were overwhelmingly positive, and other hunters reported their hunting was not affected by the ongoing youth deer hunt. Some hunters indicated that while they did not support the youth hunt when it was first proposed, their actual observations over the weekend and seeing what a positive experience it was for so many kids, has changed their minds. Additionally, New York’s junior hunters demonstrated why mentored youth have the greatest safety record of all hunters across the nation; no hunting related shooting incidents were reported during the youth deer hunt. To showcase the success of junior hunters, DEC encourages parents to submit a picture to DEC’s Big Game Hunting Photo Gallery (www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/54055.html). 15. Hey guys, going out monday and just wondering if anyone has been out near Fairfield or Anderson Hill State lands in Newark Valley. i have only been to Fairfield once last year and never been to Anderson HIll. both look like promising land for squirrel but curious if anyone has seen anything at either this year so far. Im taking a guy out with me new to hunting and would like to get a few to keep him interested in the sport. Thanks for any help or info.
  16. Hey guys, i recently got rid of an old 16 ga, i have some shells left over from hunting with it and need to find a home for them. dont know if it would be worth it to anyone but i have about half a box(approx 15-20) shells, Slugs, and shot shells. if anyone near me has a 16 ga and would like them let me know. Hate to throw them away when a fellow hunter could use them. im in Newark Valley area just give a hollar if you could use them.
  17. i was wondering i could get some help my decision on getting a tree stand. I will not be getting the Guido web this year, most likely next year. I am deciding over to get a hang on or a climber tree stand. My hunting takes place on state land.(i do both gun and bow) I was wondering what would be better suited for me a hang on or a climber. Also what are the advantages and disadvantages that come with them. My price limit will be 200 if that helps to.
  18. I've always wander how fast deer reflexes realy are and how to overcome them. Since last year is when i started wondering. The old man took a shot at a spiker at roughly 20 to 30 yards out. With in a second or two the deer duck the shot and ran off. My question to all the bow hunters out there is how to over come the reflexes? When do the deer begin to "jump the string"(i think thats what its called when the deer ducks). Do they do it at 5, 10, 15 and so on. Is it increased when the deers alert and the speed of the bow a factor(I shoot a diamond outlaw if that helps)?

  20. I am new to the capital region and I had been hunting on the same land for the past 6 years, but will not have rights this year because the property was sold. I am trying to find some ideas for places to hunt in, or close to, Saratoga County. I have played around on the DEC website for public land, but it can be a bit confusing. From what I have heard, the public land around here is very crowded during the hunting season. I am open to hunting on public land (mainly during bow season), but i'd prefer to have something private for gun for my own safety. I can really only get out there 2-3 weekends during the season. I even thought of dropping off flyers to some local farmers near my house but I was sure if that would tick people off! I was going to pay, barter labor, or even or meat for rights to hunt occasionally. I'd be open for any suggestions! Thanks!
  21. Great litter of puppies, 5 male ($100) 3 female($150). Mom and dad both hunt hard.
  22. I'm soooooooooooo excited!!!!!! The call of the bow might be greater than the call of the boat. Good Luck to all this season.
  23. Approximately 30,000 adult pheasants will be released on lands open to public hunting for the upcoming fall pheasant hunting season, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today. The pheasant hunting season begins on October 1 in northern and eastern portions of New York, October 20 in central and western portions, and November 1 on Long Island. For the sixth consecutive year, junior hunters (12-15 years old) have the opportunity to hunt pheasants the weekend prior to the regular pheasant hunting season. In western New York, the youth pheasant hunt weekend is October 13-14. In northern and eastern New York, the youth pheasant hunt weekend is September 29-30, and on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk counties) it is October 27-28. Pheasants will be released on a number of select sites across the state to provide ample youth hunting opportunities (see table attached). All current pheasant rules and regulations remain in effect during the youth hunt. Please note that a 2011-12 hunting license is required to hunt during September, and a 2012-13 license is required starting October 1. The majority of birds will be released on state-owned wildlife management areas and cooperative hunting areas prior to and during the fall hunting season. All release sites for pheasants provided by state-funded programs are open to public hunting. A list of statewide adult pheasant release sites and sites receiving birds for the youth pheasant hunt weekends can be found on DEC's website. The Day-old Pheasant Chick Program provides additional opportunities for pheasant hunters. This program was developed in the early 1900s to provide day-old pheasant chicks to cooperating 4-H groups and sportsmen and sportswomen. The chicks are distributed to program participants in May and June, and cooperators incur all costs associated with rearing the birds, including feed, water, utilities and facility construction. The birds are raised to adulthood and released on lands open to public hunting before the season opens. This year, over 42,000 pheasant chicks were distributed statewide as part of this program. Anyone interested in raising and releasing pheasants to expand next year's hunting opportunities should contact DEC’s Reynolds Game Farm at (607) 273-2768. Boundaries for pheasant hunting zones conform to Wildlife Management Units used for management of other upland wildlife. Wildlife Management Unit boundary descriptions can be found on the DEC website. In addition to knowing these unit boundary descriptions, hunters should review the 2012-2013 New York Hunting & Trapping Guide for complete regulations and other important information before going afield. Hunters who plan to use private lands should ask permission from the landowner. Pheasant Release Sites: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9349.html Click here to view the article
  24. I am not exactly sure what first sparked my interest in hunting, possibly my first BB/Pelet gun? Possibly the outdoor trips upstate with friend contributed. The summer and winter trips to Maine or Penn for the week long vacations with family might have sparked the intrest. No other family members hunted or fished as a passion. In 1987/88 one of my best friends spoke to me about doing a hunting trip for deer and the rest is history. Deer and big game was something that fascinated me as a child/adult. The fact that big game animals roamed wild woods fighting for survival sent my mind racing. While I did not become successful untile 2000 the passion for hunting never stopped. My main point is this: I am sure many hunters had mentors that helped them get into hunting. Having no mentor or person to lead me into hunting, I would state the fact that: Hunting is in my blood... Question 1: If you did not have a mentor, what factors lead you into hunting? Question 2: If you had a mentor to get you into hunting, do you think with out that person guilding you, you still would have been into hunting? Why or why not. IMO you are born with the itch or not. I use to crave watching deer as a kid, guese I am still a kid at heart as my passion has only deepened with every passing year. The pic is of my first deer in 2000. Pictured from L-R Shawn, myself, Chris and Greg. The millenium buck. 8pt w/broken brow tine 165 dressed Est. 2.5.
