  1. I am new in the area (Callicoon). Looking forward to get some advise on public land options. Maybe some club recommendation .... Anybody familiar with http://sunrisefarm.org/ ? Trying to find some fellow hunters to team up with .... Anybody looking for a hand in a drive or to go for a few outings, let me know, would be thrilled to tag along and meet some fellow local hunters. Regards, Boris
  2. New in area (Callicoon, NY). Looking to connect with some hunters to partner up for some pheasant, turkey and deer (rifle) hunting. Preferred Sullivan County or Delaware County. Happy to be part of a drive. Have no joined any club yet, so public is only option for me.... Regards, Boris
  3. I'm new to the page and just wanted to say hello. Getting geared up for the turkey opener this week. I have been hunting for 10 plus years and once I was turned onto bow hunting it was game over from there.
  4. hey guys its hunting3m, my email on my old account was hacked, and i wasn't able to get my account back. today was opening of youth season. Slept through my alarm this morning. Wasn't able to be in the woods until 7 30. Instantly heard gobbles responding to me, so me and my dad set up. Soon we saw them, 250 yards away in the neighbors yard. 2 toms and 3 hens. Talked to them for an hour, and they haven't moved but 10 feet from where they were standing originally. Question: is there anything i could have done to bring those turkey to me (i don't have money for decoys). So we moved on, walking up the edge of a field, property border on my right (cow pasture). As i capped the ridge, there were 2 strutters, and a hen 5 yards behind the fence. I dropped down and layed on my stomach in my ghillie suit for what felt like forever, as they stared me down (5-10 yards away from me). Finally i was able to back away. I got in a good position with the cow pasture 40 yards in front of me, and started to call. Obviously these strutters only wanted the hen they were with. After another hour of watching these beautiful turkey just out of (legal) reach. we called it a day. Question 2: with my calling skills and no decoys, is there any way i would have been able to get at least 1 out of the 4 henned up gobblers we seen, to come into range.. Any advice will help
  5. Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend Set for April 26-27 As part of Governor Cuomo's NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, the 2014 spring turkey season opens May 1 in all of upstate New York lying north of the Bronx-Westchester County boundary and the annual youth turkey hunting weekend is April 26-27, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The youth turkey hunt is open in all of upstate New York and Suffolk County. "Approximately 100,000 turkey hunters will take to the field this spring, making it a very popular activity," Commissioner Martens said. "Governor Cuomo recognizes the importance of offering this special opportunity for junior hunters. The Youth Turkey Hunt is an excellent chance for young hunters to spend time afield with experienced adult hunters to learn about conservation first-hand, gaining the necessary knowledge and skills to become safe and responsible members of New York's hunting community." Important Details for the Youth Turkey Hunt on April 26 and 27:Hunters 12-15 years of age are eligible and must hold a hunting license and a turkey permit. Youth 12-13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or adult over 21 years of age with written permission from their parent or legal guardian. Youth 14-15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or adult over 18 years of age with written permission from their parent or legal guardian. The accompanying adult must have a current hunting license and turkey permit. The adult may assist the youth hunter, including calling, but may not carry a firearm or bow, or kill or attempt to kill a wild turkey during the youth hunt. Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to noon each day. The youth turkey hunt is open in all of upstate New York, north of the Bronx-Westchester County boundary and Suffolk County. The bag limit for the youth weekend is one bearded bird. This bird becomes part of the youth's regular spring season bag limit of two bearded birds. A second bird may be taken only in upstate New York, north of the Bronx-Westchester County boundary, beginning May 1. All other wild turkey hunting regulations are in effect. Other Important Details for the Spring Turkey Season, May 1-31, 2014:Hunting is permitted in most areas of the state, except for New York City and Long Island. Hunters must have a turkey hunting permit in addition to their small game hunting or sportsman license (if purchased before Feb. 1) or hunting license (if purchased after Feb. 1). Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to noon each day. Hunters may take two bearded turkeys during the spring season, but only one bird per day. Hunters may not use rifles or handguns firing a bullet. Hunters may hunt with a shotgun or handgun loaded with shot sizes no larger than No. 2 or smaller than No. 8, or with a bow and arrow. Crossbows may not be used for the spring 2014 turkey season. Successful hunters must fill out the tag that comes with their turkey permit and immediately attach it to any turkey harvested. Successful hunters must report their harvest within seven days of taking a bird. Call 1-866-426-3778 (1-866 GAMERPT) or report harvest online The state's enacted 2014-15 budget, signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, includes language authorizing the use of crossbows for hunting under certain circumstances. DEC will draft regulations soon and will implement the new law in time for the fall 2014 hunting season. Hunters cannot use crossbows to take wild turkey during the 2014 spring season. For more information about turkey hunting in New York, see the 2013-14 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide or visit the "Turkey Hunting" pages of DEC's website. New York has an extremely safety-conscious generation of hunters, largely due to the annual efforts of more than 3,000 dedicated volunteer sportsman education instructors. DEC suggests hunters follow the cardinal rules of hunting safety: assume every gun is loaded, control the muzzle, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, be absolutely sure of your target and what may be beyond it and don't stalk. Set up with your back against a large tree and call birds to you. To find a sportsman education class in your area, visit the DEC website or call 1-888-HUNT-ED2 (1-888-486-8332). Governor Cuomo's NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This initiative includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing and increasing hunting opportunities in New York State. In support of this initiative, this year's budget includes $6 million in NY Works funding to support creating 50 new land and water access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have gone largely untapped until now. These 50 new access projects include building new boat launches, installing new hunting blinds and building new trails and parking areas. In addition, the 2014-15 budget includes $4 million to repair the state's fish hatcheries. This year's budget also reduces short-term fishing licenses fees; increases the number of authorized statewide free fishing days to eight from two; authorizes DEC to offer 10 days of promotional prices for hunting, fishing and trapping licenses; and authorizes free Adventure Plates for new lifetime license holders, discounted Adventure Plates for existing lifetime license holders and regular fee Adventure Plates for annual license holders. Citizen Science Opportunities:DEC Seeks Turkey Hunters for Ruffed Grouse Drumming Survey - Turkey hunters in pursuit of that wary gobbler in the spring are ideally suited for monitoring ruffed grouse during the breeding season. Turkey hunters can record the number of grouse they hear drumming while afield to help DEC track the distribution and abundance of this game bird. To get a survey form, go to DEC's website or call (518) 402-8886. To participate in DEC's Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey or other wildlife surveys, visit the "Citizen Science" page of the DEC website. This post has been promoted to an article

  10. I am quite desperate in finding places to hunt in Dutchess county and for all of region 3 for that matter, as is the majority of hunters in the area so it seems. I wanted to get some information on Spring turkey hunting on state land in the area. Does anyone have any experience? Will I have to worry about overcrowding on other hunters like in deer season? Are there many turkey hunters in the area? Any suggestions on which state lands see the least traffic? I really appreciate any insight given, thanks
  11. Staten Island Turkeys Will be Culled Despite Delay, Officials Say By Nicholas Rizzi on August 22, 2013 12:28pm | Updated on August 22, 2013 12:28pm@nickr15 twitterfacebookgooglepinterestredditstumbleuponemailshare Slideshow Staten Island Turkey Cull Will Continue OCEAN BREEZE — Despite facing building pressure to scrap a turkey cull on Staten Island, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it hasn't turned chicken. A round-the-clock guard of protectors watching the birds at South Beach Psychiatric Center reported USDA officials hadn't hauled away any birds since Aug. 13. But a department spokeswoman said they still planned to send surviving turkeys to the slaughterhouse. “The (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) permits allow for all to be removed, which would require several visits over some time,” said spokeswoman Carol Bannerman. “Biologists and specialists have been working on other projects and haven’t been to Staten Island this week.” Bannerman said the USDA hasn't scheduled when workers will start to round up the rest of the turkeys. The USDA started to round up the nearly 80 turkeys that live on the grounds of the psychiatric center and sending them to the slaughter house earlier this month. Workers had complained the birds were aggressive to staff, patients and visitors. They also said turkey feces were scattered around the grounds and traffic problems were caused by the fowl crossing Seaview Avenue. Nearly 50 people took to the grounds last week to protest the cull and an online petition to save the turkeys garnered nearly 6,000 signatures. Residents also started a 24-hour watch to keep an eye on the birds. “We’re just trying to keep this from happening,” Elisa DiSimone, an environmentalist who helped organize the watch, told DNAinfo.com New York. “We're really trying save this piece of Staten Island history.” DiSimone said they had three animal sanctuaries willing to take in the remaining turkeys that haven't been sent to the slaughterhouse yet. Because the flock contains hybrid turkeys — domestic turkeys which bred with wild turkeys — the state's Department of Environmental Conservation ruled that they could not be relocated. The DEC did not respond to request for comment.
  12. DEC Seeks Participants for Summer Game Bird Surveys New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens today encouraged New Yorkers to participate in surveys about two popular game birds: wild turkeys and ring-necked pheasants. "Citizen science efforts such as these provide our wildlife managers with invaluable data and give people the opportunity to partner with DEC to help monitor state wildlife resources," Commissioner Martens said. "I encourage residents to take the time to record their observations of turkeys or pheasants while exploring the forests and fields around their home or driving through New York's beautiful landscapes this summer." Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey Since 1996, DEC has conducted the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey to estimate the number of wild turkey poults (young of the year) per hen statewide. Weather, predation, and habitat conditions during the breeding and brood-rearing seasons can all significantly impact nest success, hen survival, and poult survival. This index allows us to gauge reproductive success and predict fall harvest potential. During the month of August, survey participants will record the sex and age composition of all flocks of wild turkeys observed during normal travel. Individuals interested in participating can download a Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey form from the DEC website. Detailed instructions can be found with the data sheet. Survey cards can also be obtained by contacting your regional DEC office, by calling (518) 402-8886, or by e-mailing [email protected] (please type "Turkey Survey" in the subject line). Monitoring Pheasants in the Genesee Valley Focus Area Farmers in the 13 counties that comprise the Lake Plains of New York have partnered with DEC since 1945 to help survey wild pheasant populations. This effort continues in the newly established "Pheasant Habitat Focus Area" in the Genesee Valley (portions of Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming and Monroe counties). The focus area was created as a part of DEC's recently completed 10-year management plan for ring-necked pheasants. The goal of the focus area is to concentrate the efforts of public and private habitat conservation programs to benefit pheasants and other grassland birds. The surveys will help DEC monitor pheasant populations and evaluate the success of habitat management efforts in the focus area. Those who farm land in Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming or Monroe counties can consider participating in the Farmer-Pheasant Inventory. No special observations are required; just those made during normal spring and summer farming activities. To join, contact DEC at (518) 402-8886 or by e-mail ([email protected], write "Farmer-Pheasant Inventory" in the subject line). Those who do not farm, but would like to contribute their pheasant observations from Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming and Monroe counties can join the Summer Pheasant Sighting Survey. During the month of August, survey participants record the sex and age of all pheasants observed during normal travel. A Summer Pheasant Sighting Survey form can be printed from the DEC website or call (518) 402-8886 for further guidance. Additional information is available on the DEC website: Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey Pheasant Habitat Focus Area & Pheasants Surveys Citizen Science: Wildlife Observations Data Collection DEC Regional Office Contact Information

  14. Hi, my husband and I are new to hunting this year. There is a flock of turkey close to where we live but these are smart birds are primarily travel on private property. Does anyone know of any public lands where turkey have been seen and any advice to us on how to get a gobbler? I have recently gotten some mouth calls (diaphram) and have been having fun practicing with them but I probably sound like a sick duck more than a hen! I know people don't like to give out their secret spots but a couple hints would be great!

  18. Hey everybody, Just stuck at school till graduation, and have yet to bag a turkey. I will have roughly the last 10 days of May to get some time in the woods looking for a tom. Just wondering if the tactics stay the same throughout May. Should I just set up early morn. and call? Or are the toms generally done collecting flocks by that point? Thanks in advance for any advice, much appreciated, Muthers

  20. I have been living in Dutchess County 10 years now. Have been Bow-hunting Deer & turkey since the 80's in Westchester County. I am tired of driving 40-60 mins to hunt. I know theres great Turkey hunting here in Dutchess county. Lots of gun clubs and they have stakes on all the land that seems any good. Anyone know of any Good Public land? I know there is a MUA off the Taconic Between the Poughkeepsie & 44 exits. Tried it last year it was awful. Any areas anyone can recommend I would be greatly appreciative. Oh By the way, I hunt alone & on weekends so I won’t be bringing trucks full of guys in the woods. LOL
