Broadheads

I know this has been addressed many times on many forums ... but ... just wondering if anyone has used the Ramcats? I am headed out west on an elk hunt this year and typically I use the Rage 2 blade for deer. In Idaho they don't allow mechanicals whioch is fine - I probably wouldn't use them on an elk anyways so i am in the market for a fixed blad broadhead that is forgiving and doesn't plane with a 315+fps bow. I would love to test a Slick trick or Ramcat out. Any suggestions or tips?? Thanks.

Ive been using Crimson Talon XTs, but am switching over to the G5 Montecs this year. I know Culver shoots them and other than the model of our bows, their specs and speeds are similar and they shoot great for him. I like the fact that they are 1 piece and can be resharpened.

I don't have any history with them. But if you want to throw another in the mix to evaluate check out the G5 Montec. cut on contact. I had no planing issues and the fright was identical to my Field tips. they are cut on contact and the to touch up/ sharpen them it is on a flat stone which may be nice if you are remote on the Elk hunt.

100 grains for both? Do you get similiar penetration and would recommend one over the other for any application?

I shoot 100 grain. razor has better penetration. I blew through one shoulder at 30 yards with the razor complete pass through quartering away shot. For me I just like cut on impact heads over chisel tip.

Slick Trick 100%

I'd suggest the standard for Elk. Longer shots are much more realistic out west and they will serve you well and you will get the penetration you need. I have historically shot ST and Striker and Striker type heads (Bass Pro Blackouts). ST has consistently out-penetrated Strikers in any forum...block, 3d targets, blob-like targets, and in my observations, animals.

The larger cut Magnums or other ST variants are nice, but the standard is a dream for out west.

I have never hunted Elk nor do I intend to but ......... I would think I would use a heavier arrow and broadhead . Elk are much larger than deer and I would think a heavier broadhead would pack more of a punch .

That's opening a whole 'nother can of worms. Getting into FOC, etc.

Chances are, as long as he is not shooting one of the new ultra-light hunting arrows, his speed/KE will do with most common arrow/non mech heads out there. ST is extremely popular out west for elk...others that I can think of are Wac Em, Strikers, and Magnus. I do know quite a few people who go out west with Grim Reaper mechs where legal. I use them on deer here...but if I were elk hunting, my personal rig would push me back to ST. I still use ST out of blinds.

Phade thanks for the insight ... very helpful and base don my research so far I thin the Slick trick Standards are the way to go. I hope they fly well - I shoot an Insanity 392 grains at 318 fps. The set-up produces optimal KE and should provide for a very flat shooting bow. I understand tuning and form but on a hunt like that I want a BH that is forgiving considering Murphey's Law and it seems like the Slick Tricks penetrate excellent and meet my criteria. Thanks again very helpful.

392 including broadhead? How many pounds you shooting? Draw length?

Most people I know that head out west do so with 400+ finished weights. 392 is probably OK, but, certainly wouldn't entertain thoughts below that personally...and I wouldn't look at anything other than the standard ST to help with any penetration issues given that finished weight.

392 including broadhead (100grains) - 70lbs - 29" = 318 - 322 fps = 89lbs of KE

1 pin 0-35 yards then micro adjustments out to 50.

Rage 2 blade for deer and pretty sure ST standards for Elk this year - going to get some this weekend.
