through the New York Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) issued a statewide 90-day residential burn ban effective through October 10th.

In a press release issued by DHSES on Friday, the Governor stated "These conditions should not be taken lightly," Governor Cuomo said. "The potential for disastrous
is present in all areas of the state and we must do whatever we can to prevent fires from occurring. The state will continue to closely monitor the wildfire danger and we will deploy whatever resources are necessary to protect New Yorkers should a critical situation occur."

The same press release urged NY residents to follow these precautions with outdoor fires:

· Refrain from starting any type of outdoor fire and in cases where a fire must be started, take extreme caution.

· Be watchful and keep a close eye when grilling outdoors.

· For those who smoke, make sure a lit cigarette is completely extinguished.

·
When camping, use existing campfire rings when possible and keep fires small.

· Scrape away litter, duff, and any burnable material within a 10 foot diameter circle. This will keep the campfire from spreading.

· Never leave a campfire unattended.

· Drown the fire with water. Make sure all embers, coals, and sticks are wet. Stir the remains, add more water, and stir again.

· Use a cooking stove instead of a campfire to prepare meals

After an unusually mild winter, portions of the state has received only 25% of its normal rainfall, very dry conditions exist throughout the NY. These conditions are worst in Western and Northern NY. With any wind, even a small spark can become a dangerous wildfire very quickly.

DEC will issue an emergency regulation today implementing a statewide ban on residential brush burning through October 10. Violators of the open burning state regulation are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions. In addition, the Department of Environmental Conservation will suspend all burning permits previously issued. A moratorium on new permits is now in effect through October 10."

Looks like that camping trip to the state park will suck this year. Is a ban on things like small fire pits really necessary?

It only takes one spark to set the dry woods on fire . Some of those fires out west are allegedly started by someone throwing a cig butt out or sparks from a campfire .

That's true, but it is because they didn't attend to the fire, or negligently tossed a cig that the wildfire got started. A campfire can be controlled without fear, but the government doesn't trust it's people to do the right thing. Admittedly, a lot of people can't be trusted, and that's why the rest of us must suffer.

This is the "no fun" state after all. They just keep trying to control us. Yes a seatbelt keeps you safe but its my life and my choice. Yes a 16 oz. soda is not necessary but I want the freedom to choose. small controlled camp fires are not the problem. #1 we are not out west and in my opinion there is not a great chance of burning down the southern tier. we might have problems if the slobs keep tossing their cig's out the window. why don't they make cig's illegal? they are bad for the heath and might start a fire.

Oh yeah, they need the tax money to keep the free programs running. Thanks NY.

Funny how a thread about banning fires in a time of drought turns into government bashing. People can lose their lives, livelihood and all possesions. By the way we are hunters and need the woods to hunt in. This is so typical of a few on this website.

The funny part is its only a brush burning ban, and clearly states you can still have camp fires but should be cautious when doing so. I guess that got over looked by those looking for a reason to get pissed off.
