State Police question

Just out of my own curiosity I was wondering if a State Trooper or Sherriff for that matter was allowed to enforce wildlife laws like an ENCON officer does. Even down to the simple things like liscence checks and so on...

and an Encon officer can give you a traffic ticket . I was checked by a Trooper out at the road 10 years back or so, and some Sheriffs stopped me when they thought I was hunting on posted land couple years back. I wasn't but they got a 3rd party call from out of state.....

Yes, ECO's and Forest Rangers both now have broad law enforcement powers they did not have in the past.

ECOs have probably the most power which is kinda funny, they can search your car with no warrant....

I was told by an ECO that they are they only law enforcement that can enforce Federal, state, and local laws.

State Troopers can enforce any violations, misd, or fel within the state of NY.

Local Police can also enforce Misd. and Felonies that they observe out of jursidcition as well but that would be pretty stupid unless it was to defend/protect someone.

You have to remember that many LE hunt also and know the laws. Heck I have had off duty LE stop and talk to me as they too were hunting. A few years ago I had a state trooper pull across the road to block me as I came down a seasonal dirt road. His partner jumped out of the SUV and the first thing he asked was if I had a gun in the vehicle and were was it. The next question was if I had any game in the vehicle. I thought for sure I was going to get a ticket for expired inspection, but nope. They sent me on my way and all was good.

Exactly, but they are covered by the good samaritan act if they are doing the right thing and they could be sued if they don't do anything. Double edged sword damned if you damned if you don't. My rule of thumb is if its someones safety get invovled, property only keep it moving!

yes they can..the bad part is MOST don't know the laws...they should have a class every year to go over the law changes, however they don't

they may know deer laws...however we hunt coyote at night

and I keep a regulations book in my truck....just to show them it is LEGALE to hunt at night with lights

and yes i have a lot of freinds and family that are LEO's

I wonder if their supervisers would authorize them to get out in field & stream unless there was a felony in progress. Same for entering private land... That differs from the duties of conservation officers and forest rangers ...
