The New NY Gun Law Sticky - NY SAFE Act - FAQ, Petitions, Lawsuits, Info Links

Last entry on this thread was April.

The anti-gun politicians have us figured out pretty darn well, don't they? A whole lot of noise for a very short while and then ... Poof! .... no more interest. By the time the next election rolls around that involves those creeps that voted for this law, nobody will even remember what all the fuss was all about. It's already forgotten ancient history. Once again the politicians escape totally unscathed and still thumbing their noses at us for the slick way that they have further deprived gun owners of their 2nd amendment rights. I predicted this, but I was hopeful that I would be wrong.

This thread was originally started to only have official updates on the progress of getting the safe act thrown out. There really hasn't been much progress our only hope is wait for the courts decisions and come out with big numbers at the next election. I know an awful lot of people who are still very p!ssed about the safe act and even more people who dislike Cuomo in general. In my area our representatives voted against the safe act and we can't really vote against other peoples representatives so most people are planning on voting against Cuomo and hoping he signed his resignation papers when he pushed the safe act through. The most we can do is inform people of what the safe act actually is and help them become informed voters.

HOT OFF THE PRESS

NYSP SAFE Act Update 3-11-2016

Effective March 11, 2016 we have been advised by the New York State Police Troop L Gun Investigation Unit that their official determinations have now been made on a number of items and configurations of semi-automatic rifles under the SAFE Act. We have requested they provide a formal notification in writing which we expect to see in the next 30 days. We are working with our attorneys as well as attorneys representing some of the component manufacturers to explore legal challenge options. Below is a summary of what we have been advised:

- Any “featureless” configuration on an AR or AK style receiver is NOT compliant. This includes: the Spur, the Thordsen FRS, the Monsterman, the Boar and all other similar items where the hand is below the action of the rifle.
- “Featureless” rifles including the Mini 14, Saiga Sporter, Ruger 10/22, Ares SCR, etc. where the hand is behind the action of the rifle ARE compliant.
- The AR Mag-Lock mechanism which allows removal of the magazine when the action is open is NOT compliant.
- The DS-15 FX series fixed magazine receiver and rifles which are manufactured as a “fixed magazine” ARE compliant.

This information is subject to change and clarification. No other clarifications have been issued at this time leaving some products still in the grey area. As always, we are not attorneys and do not offer legal advice, we are only trying to pass along information as it becomes available to us.

Another safe-act petition This one is from Senator Robert Ortt in Niagara County/Lockport. You have to sign up to sign it and once you submit your information it will send your vote to your senator based on the information provided.

Pain in the neck but at least someone is trying.

Yeah it is going to change because now they see what didn't work and now they will be changing the new law so it pass judicial muster

This just came down last night. Cali has basically the same mag ban we do, federal judge ruled it violates Heller. Only a matter of time before our law is changed, sooner rather than later!

No, the ruling and associated AMICUS brief said just the restriction alone is unconstitutional, beacause 10+ round mags are so common.  No getting around that.

I wanna see how it effects the semi auto bans like the SAFE ACT, since it bans the AR, which is one of the most popular, if not the most popular sporting rifle in the country...

On a recent visit to both the hospital emergency room and my primary doctor I was asked “Do you feel like harming yourself?”  I find that question odd since why would anyone who is seeking medical treatment to improve their health want to harm them self?

The following links are very interesting regarding this question:

Hey Everyone! This is Louis Backlas/ Cross Over the River Outdoors. I just posted a new video to my YouTube channel that I though ya'll might get a kick out of! Have you ever used a decoy to hunt whitetails? If you haven't before you might want to start! I woke up one morning and look out my front window only  to find that my 3D deer target was in pieces all over the front lawn! A fired up buck decided to take his frustrations out on the target!  this took place sometime in November during the peek of the rut. Hope ya'll get a kick out of it!

      Hello -
I'm in the market for a shotgun geared towards waterfowl hunting. I am new to hunting and female, so I don't want a macho gun that'll give me such kickback that I'll fly backwards upon firing or spend too much $, my budget is $500 tops and I'm guessing I need a 20 gauge. I was considering a Remington 870 (the low end model) or even a Benelli Nova. I read that for duck hunting in LI or NYS whatever, the gun can not have more than 3 rounds in it, I'm not sure how or if that impacts what kind of gun I need to get. Also what kind of action is best?
Any and all model recommendations are welcomed. Thanks for your help.
P.S. If anyone knows of a good gun store in Manhattan (yeah I know), or LI let me know. Aside from looking for a gun, I need to know where to buy one!

If you are looking for a hunting lease you are in luck. Cotton-Hanlon will be posting our list of available woodlots on March 2, 2015 (next Monday) at 7:30 AM. It's first come first served so make sure to check out our website www.cottonhanlon.com  that morning.

Looks like we are going to have two to three dozen woodlots open for lease on the list this year. All of the parcels will be in NY in the following counties: Chemung, Cortland, Oswego, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to shoot me an email. [email protected]

So here's my story. This is my second season hunting. I hunt on about 75-100 acres of private land with 3 other hunters. The owner of the land is retired and keeps daily notes on hunting times, amount of deer, turkey, etc seen (and has been for like 20 years). 2 years ago, by the end of early bow season had counted some 400 deer. Last year was thought to be the worst season he has ever seen with only seeing about 200 deer and about 300 turkey before gun season. But this year it is even worse. Zero turkey and only 48 deer have been seen. Last year there was mostly nocturnal movement. This year we arent even seeing any signs inculding tracks and nothing on our trailcams. They arent using trails they have been using for 20+ years. We thought maybe a lot of coyotes have moved in but we havent even seen/heard them either.
As far as landscape and terrain. Nothing has changed. To make them alter their patterns from previous years.
      SO, my questions are:
      1. Where are all the deer?!
      2. Any ideas whats going on?
      3. Are other hunters having the same problem?
