DIY cheap easy snow camo job

Recommended Posts

well i decided to figure out a way to camo my rifle for hunting in snow... i was sitting at my desk this morning with my gun looking at it and thinking then suddenly, TADA!!!!! white hockey tape!!!!! i had a roll lying on my desk i got at lowes for $.99 (i think thats how much it was) first i preformed a stick test by winding some onto the barrel and then rubbing it real good and taking it off... left no residue at all so here is what i came out with..... made some brushy like markings on it as an afterthought w a magic marker

I've been looking into doing something similar. I do not like the thought of moisture getting trapped under the tape, so I considered using some 3M medical wrap(not sticky). Then I could undo from time to time so it doesn't trap moisture. Then I came accross this http://www.mossyoakg...n-wrap-kit.html. For $25 it looks sweet! They also have shotgun skins. Most of the customer reviews are under the shotgun skins, but it should be the same. Using a heat gun or hairdryer it lets you conform it to the gun, making a tight seal.

I haven't tried it yet, but soon will!

Good idea. But I have tried using magic marker to draw on camo patterns and , although it works well, that magic marker stink lingers for a while, on cloth or cloth tape. I use strips of black electric tape, cut to different thicknesses over the cloth tape to break up the pattern. As far as the glue reside, it should come off with some mineral spirits.

all i wanted was a cheap easy quick way to snow camo my gun for coyote hunting... i want it to stay black...

I hear ya' there Joseph. I didn't mean to divert from your original post. I just thought the wraps looked pretty sweet!

Actually I might do the"brush" pattern wrap on my .22mag coyote gun and then when the snow flies I can slap some tape over it and not have to worry about the residue.

All of my shotguns and muzzy will be getting the wraps.

In years past when I used to predator hunt with my old bolt action Marlin 550 12ga. "Gooseneck". I used to sew pieces of white t-shirt around the gun. Took me about an hour, but it served it's purpose. Didn't look horrible either.

I bought a roll of McNett Camo Form Tape on Ebay for my AR15 in 6.8 for whitetail here in NY. The camo form tape sticks to itself and not the gun. The tape remained on the gun for the entire season here in NY. When it came time to remove it, no residue was left behind. There are several camo patterns available including snow camo. I opted for the digital camo because it is the cheapest. I also purchased a roll of snow camo in case there was a lot of snow or if I was going to use the gun for varmint hunting during the winter.

I did such a heat wrap...years ago when they first cam out...I as you know hunt a lot....took the wrap off barrel at the end of season...rust...not a happy camper.... it is my good browning...Well did leave the wrap on the stock...to this day it's still on...I'll never wrap metal again

I had the same thing happen to my Mossberg 500. Wrapped the barrel and reciever with camo tape. Barrel rusted quick. Ill never use it again on anything metal.
