Hey,

I know it's late into the season for this but I'm just feeling it out for the future. I'm new to hunting, and I live in Brooklyn. I have a couple of friends in 3s that hunt but its not that easy to coordinate with them. Anybody closer to Brooklyn that would possibly be looking to partake when possible. I have no problem traveling a bit if timing is right. I also own a trailer in nj that is about 15 minutes from Orange County and from what I heard there is state land there but I have no information about it. Oh btw I have bow and I'm In the process of going through the nyc process in order to be able to purchase a firearm. Hoping to lease some land next season if a good group forms. good luck out there tomorrow and every other day. Thanks

That state land you're talking about in Orange County shared with NJ is most likely Sterling Forest.  You need a permit for that park.  Simply fill out the form and mail it in or go to their park office and get it the same day.  No guns allowed in Sterling prior to November 1st.

The other 2 that are near NJ borders is Pochuck and Huckleberry Ridge.  I've never been to those 2 so I can't tell you much about them.

Good luck.

This NYC process to buy a firearm? Stuff like this is why I no longer buy a non-resident license for NY. I hunted the 'Daks since 1961 and the only year I didn't hunt NY before this year is because of a death in the family. Either sportsmen are welcome in NY or else we are children to be fussed over and controlled. Can non-resident hunters even buy ammunition? What restrictions have they on modern sporting arms? If you live in NY you are stuck with it but I now live in NJ a mere 1/2 hour from PA and if I choose to hunt with a rifle, PA's where I'm heading.

When I grew up in Brooklyn there were no restrictions on purchasing long guns. As a matter of fact that area where they built the WTC was rife with gun stores. As time passed, gun ownership became more of a pain. First they had a form you had to fill out listing the serial numbers (if present) of all your guns and you had to put up with getting fingerprinted, etc. at the local precint but it was free. I hear there are much worse restrictions today and I'd like to hear about them.

Since then I left NY for good and have lived in other states where such horse-collaring by the law is considered bizarre.

If this gentleman looking to hunt the Southern tier has some good maps (you can get them online from NOAA but you print them yourself) he can find state land. But in the Southern tier, getting over private land to the state land is sometimes tricky. Many times clubs arbitrarily post state land and the from-out-of-the-area hunter has no way of telling.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!

New hunter to NY here. Found some public land to hunt, it’s a WMA. I wish I read the regs more thoroughly because I threw up a ladder stand yesterday and today when I was re-reading them, I saw you can’t put temporary stands on WMAs, only on state forests and other such state land. I honestly didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to, I even put my name and license # on the stand. I was going to go take it down tomorrow but it’s an hour drive so I wanted to ask, what do DEC officers do if they find a ladderstand like mine on a WMA? Is this an automatic fine or whatever? Will they just call me and tell me to come get it? Confiscate? How often do officers go through areas like WMAs and check for stands? Any info would be helpful. I’ll still probably go take it down tomorrow, although I have seen other stands up on the WMA, I just prefer to stay on the right side of the law myself. Thanks!

We will be publishing the new list of available hunting leases on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 7:30 AM on our website www.cottonhanlon.com
Cotton-Hanlon is a private timber company that owns land in NY and PA (sorry all our land in PA is currently leased). We have been leasing land since the fall of 1970. You will be dealing directly with the us, no third parties.
Still working on the list but it looks like we'll have woodlots available in the following counties in NY: Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Oswego, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins.
Make sure to check it out first thing that morning for the best choices.
      Thanks, Bob
