fox with .308

just wondering what you guys think a .308 caliber rifle would do to a smaller red fox that I have been seeing. Is it worth it to shoot or will their be nothing left?

All depends on the bullet you are using and the distance. Some .308 bullets will turn him inside out and others just a small entrance and exit.

I use a .22mag for fox if that's any indication. If you have a shotgun, load it with a turkey wad or high brass #5 shot. 

A .308 would make a mess in my opinion. I've been hearing of .204 rugers doing too much damage

I have shot fox with everything from a 22 all the way up to a 30-06.The 06 was the worst followed closely by the 308.If you use a slow expanding bullet then it may not be bad.

like coyotes, fox will breed more to compensate for a decline in the population and without regulated population management mange will run rampant.

first off its legal for him to take a fox,will shooting one with his 308 give him a nice pelt/mount???More than likely no,but he paid for his license and he can do what he wants.Let him be.We all like to hunt and we all do things a touch different,just because a guy is doing something you wouldn't do then it doesn't make him wrong and you right.Also fox kill the hell out of turkeys while they are eggs,and also are big time killers of cats and small dogs.they do there damage and like all the animals we hunt their #'s need to be kept in check

Fox are not big animals, they do not hold up very well to being shot with large caliber guns............if you really want one for whatever reason, go after it with something smaller........... a .22 is sufficient.

Early you think a fox doesn't kill small poults or even gets into the eggs when the hen is laying?I have seen many times in the city I live in foxes that have killed cats and if they can kill a cat I will guarantee small dogs aren't to far off either.

Fox are predators. They do kill to eat, but so do many other animals. I hunt fox for the pelts and that's my prerogative.I don't take huge amounts. Many trappers take dozens every season and yet the population stays sufficient. Like I mentioned earlier, they will recover naturally. I don't think taking a few fox is gonna cause great turmoil in nature. Let the hawks have some mice too! LOL

If I ever get a fox, it's going to get mount or at the very minimum, the pelt will be saved.  Thus, if I come across a fox and the only thing in my hand is a 308, I would let it walk.

A 223 is the biggest i would go for fox i shot

a fox with my 22-250 witha 45gr jhp and it was nasty

i couldn't imagine what a 308 would do..

I dont get it? What's wrong with hunting fox? Any schmuck can go out and shoot a deer. A fox is much tougher to hunt than a deer.

In my neighborhood the are on the same list a Yotes. Most of my neighbors have or had chicken killed by Fox one of them lost 15 chickens last year.And another almost the same amount.For these people that is part of there income taken away.They are very crafety and find ways to get into the fencened in areas an coups.

I took a fox a few years ago with my Ruger MKII .308 and it was fine. I have it mounted as well and looks great.
