Hunting Camp Time

Greetings to the NY Hunting Forum from my Hunting Camp,

When I was younger and working, and for close to 50 years I would squeeze in a few days here and there between job and family commitments and go hunting or fishing. It was good but always seemed rushed .During those years I dreamt about spending extended time at a hunting camp with no job calling me back and no feeling of being rushed. Well, I retired this past July and with the exception of some Family commitments I have the time now to set up a long-term camp and spend time there. I set up camp about 4 weeks ago and the time I’ve spent there has exceeded my dreams. So far, no luck hunting but it has been worth while doing it. If anyone has ever had a similar dream, I would encourage you to give it a go. I would like to thank my friend and forum member Dino Rocks for inspiration to do this after I got updates from his 3 week trapping / hunting trip he did last season.

The following videos are from my tent camp. Most of the stuff in the videos is about the camp as I have not had any luck hunting. Perhaps that will change but even if I do not get a deer, I am living my dream before I am too old to.

Camp is a forgotten thing since sat opener came into effect. Fortunately i have a retired friend who basically moves  in for 3 months. Stories, Laughter, camp cooking .. so many will never get to experiance  it..glad your giving it a go! Camp is always better with friends!

Great videos , you sure seem happy to be there.

Couple questions I may have missed the answers to:

1) how do you keep your food from spoiling ?

2) what types of foods do you bring ?

3) is there a water source close by for drinking and washing ?

4) what part of the state are you in ?

5) how many acres do you own ?

Luberhill, I can drive my truck almost up to the camp. I have access to a nearby cabin that I have been using for food storage. Pretty hard for a guy my age with my resources to travel to a 100% remote wilderness area. Although the site is not a 100% remote wilderness, I'm doing my best to use the tent camp as if it was. It fits my dream as close as I can at my age and with my abilities. It is not hard for me to imagine at times while being there, that I am in some very remote wilderness area. On a few occasions I have been interupted by noise from the outside world and I do my best to not let it bother me. As far as water goes, I have two 7 gallon water jugs and have access to a water source for getting water to wash. So far I am enjoying the experience quite a bit.

How much property do you have there ?

Is it in the Adirondack’s

Your first paragraph matches exactly the conversation that my buddies and i have all the time- and will probably have again this weekend at the cabin.  Can't wait for the days when i'm retired and will have more time to get up there and not feel rushed.  i look forward to being there for a few weeks at a time- when my most difficult decision will be whether to bow hunt, duck hunt, or go fishing- or even sleep in occasionally.  Good for you.  Enjoy the time.

My sediments exactly, cant wait for the days of retirement. Always feel rushed myself, 3 1/2hr drive each way, sometimes only on a weekends to cut grass and before you know it your back in car heading back home.. I long for those days where I can be at camp for weeks and all the time is at my mercy.

Glad to see you reach your dreams. I am working toward that now. Career doesn't let me get much downtime but I do force two weeks in November every year and for the most part stay disconnected during that time. I have enjoyed hunting out of state more and more - better hunting, but also a fun experience with travel, camping, and the journey itself.

I am in the hunt for a land purchase to reach my own goals. Kudos to you making it happen. Time is always going to win, but you're finding a way to make the most of it!
