Wait they served in takeout containers?

Yup. Strange because inside and outside both open. We ate inside. Glasses and silverware were real but not plates.

We love this.  Wife typed out recipe and sent it to me as only memorized it.

Black bean tamale pie
1 package of cornbread muffin mix
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
2 cups shredded cheddar ( divided)
1/2 pound ground venison
1/2  white onion, chopped
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup picante sauce

Spray bottom of 8 inch glass square baking dish. Mix muffin mix with milk, egg , and 1 cup cheddar in a bowl. Press into bottom of dish. Brown venison with onions and peppers. Drain any liquid . Mix with picante sauce and beans.  Spoon on top of cornbread mix.   I think I bake 350  for maybe about 1/2 hour. Then top with rest of cheese and bake until melted. Serve with extra picante sauce and sour cream.   We top with mighty sauce too. May have to bake longer... May need to look at bottom of dish.
