if you guys could indulge me...

my mom bought my dad a browning A5 in 1953 as a gift for him on their honeymoon up in wilmington just east of lake placid.  they stayed in a chalet at the end of fox farm road.  she got for him somewhere while they were there.

she'll be 91 in january and has trouble fillin in some of the details...like what she payed for it.  its all sentimental value to me anyway.  But, this ad got me thinking about it again.  any idea what that would go for new?  Thanks

Browning has discontinued the old long recoil Auto 5 a few years ago, the Auto 5s in real nice shape are bringing big money, easily $1500 to $2500, a new one in the box can go for over $3000

Browning still produces the Auto 5 but it's operation is completely different from the old long recoil gun, Kinetic recoil I think is the term they now use. Like all Brownings it is still a nice shotgun and sells for just under $2000.

When I was 14 in 1955 , my dad let me buy a 22 . I bought a used Marlin 22 cal lever action for $35 at Hughes Sporting Goods Store in Dansville , NY . I gave the rifle to one of my sons a couple years ago . Shot a heck of a lot of woodchucks with that rifle .

I'm not a big semi-auto guy... but I would kill to get a Rem 760 pump 30-06 for $149. They are 5 times that now... IF you can find someone willing to part with with it!!!

Agree.  In the early 1980s, I bought a used Rem 760 factory carbine in 30-06 for $125.  My first deer rifle.  Love it and will never sell it.

My first firearm was a Wards Westernfield 500 12 ga pump.  It was the Mossberg 500 made for Montgomery Wards.  It was November of 1970 and my Dad paid $98 for it at a store in the Menlo Park Mall in NJ.  We then took it with us right out into the mall and walked through the entire mall out the door nearest our car.  Nobody even looked at us while we walked.

Times were much better in those days.  Jobs paid less in the amount you got back then, but the dollar could buy a lot more then too.  My first job paid me $2 an hour when I was sixteen, but a brand new loaded Chevy Monte Carlo was $5000 in 1974, and I bought one with cash after getting a machine operator job with J&J in 1973 where I only made about $12,000 a year with a lot of OT.

I often told my children that things have not gotten expensive now, the dollar has gotten worthless.  That's what inflation does.

The times sure have changed.  At a mall near me, before the big box sporting goods store in it decided to stop selling any firearms, their policy was if you bought a gun, 1) you could not also purchase any ammo (it did not matter if it did not fit the gun!) and 2) you would be escorted out the store by mall security to your car,  you could not enter the mall itself.

My experience was different.  As a high school student (16-18 years old) I had a part time job working at the sporting goods department at Woolworths in Greece.  I was hired on the spot because I knew how to make change and about firearms.  We often GAVE a box of ammunition to a customer who bought a relatively expensive gun to sweeten the deal.  I learned a lot about the general public and firearms while working there.  Customers walked in with loaded rifles that were jammed, a customer who wanted to return a shotgun because it blew a hole in his ceiling (I took that one back!), a lot of crazy stuff.  It was a great job for a high school kid.

I can remember when the LGS would always throw in a box of ammo with your gun purchase.

I also remember when looking at handguns (or any gun for that matter), the guy behind the counter would give you 3 rounds and point you in the direction of either the indoor range (if available) or the outdoor range.

Just looked at the “owner’s manual” down in my safe. He wrote the serial number, date purchased & price on the it.   During the 2005 hunting season i met my dad in the woods one day while hunting. I told him I wanted that “willed” to me. He gave it to me for Christmas that year.  Have hunted with it ever since. Can’t believe it’s been 17 years since he gave that to me.
