GOP hires "internet trolls"?

Why is this a surprise? Just about every major organization is doing it and has been doing it for a while. It is very big with "review" sites.

Also, while the original article is crafted to give the impression that the GOP is doing it, the article does stop short of stating that. In fact, the author claims to have interned for a company with Republican party contracts but says the job offering was with a different company. It may or may not have had anything to do with politics.

While I believe both political parties engage in this practice, there is no way one can derive the title of this thread from the linked "article."

I am going to agree with you, except the writer specified in his case, he did it for the GOP. This post wasn't intended to bash them and/or imply it was only them who does this. I actually am questioning how prevalent this sort of thing actually is on web forums, not who does it or who does it the most.

I'd be willing to bet it happens a lot, but no company is going to proudly admit that they pay shills to write comments or reviews in their favor. It's the world-wide-web, and everyone is an anonymous screen name. I wouldn't be surprised if they are paying people in India or the Philippines $10/day for trolling work.

Having read many extreme comments by our most prevalent "trolls", I've a different take on this.

Since these conversations are visible to anyone who chooses to read them - including anti-gun and anti-hunting advocates - I have found myself wondering if the worst of the posts are intended to make hunters look bad in general.

It's been years since I read Faces of the Enemy by Sam Keene. It is worth your time. You couldn't do a better job of portraying hunters in a bad light than a small minority of our most vocal, anonymous and active posters do.

It is extremely prevalent on FaceBook.

Mike,

My comment wasn't intended to argue and I agree with your basic point. However, I did want to point out that while the writer mentioned the Republican party, he specifically noted he did his trolling for a _different_ company than the one which had the GOP as a client. I see where he may have intended some connection, but the text does not state that.

after an internship at a firm with government and political party (Republican) contracts, I was offered the position of "Online Communications Associate" at another company

(emphasis mine)

In fact, he doesn't specifically state he ever had anything to do with the GOP - only that they were client of the company he interned for.
