TURKEY HUNT RUINED!!

Quick break -time post.--- How would members here handle this?    I was set-up at a field edge and had a 5-stake ground blind in front of me. There were a group of turkeys about 100 yards distant. Maybe 8 of them. They left the field pretty quick all of a sudden and in the next 2 minutes- this turkey hunter comes up behind me and starts a conversation!!! This happened at Stewart State Forest where there are group events that go on and I believe this guy just drove in with them!! Spring hunters at Stewart can only bike or walk past the locked gates unless they are disabled and have the key to the gate. This hunter however was ablebodied!   And --I was in a good 1 and a half miles! He ruined my perfect morning. I don't know to this day if he spooked the birds on purpose- but he said that this field was his favorite one.!  I had ashort talk with him and bundled up my ground blind before I got alot more pissed off and left. He stayed to hunt his field. Good thing I have a long fuse and kept control. This guy was in his early 30s I would say and this happened a good 10 years ago.  I wrote this story in one of my books.

    So- how would hunters here handle this guy who just cleared a field of turkeys?

not much you can do, is there? 10 years is a long time to carry that around.....time to let it go.

I would have handled it in a similar fashion as to how you just handle this...

PS ...I would have said to his... "this is my favorite field"...Good! ...go get set up...when I see some birds I'll be over to say hi!

Regardless of whether the hunter was disabled he should have given the first man there his bird. I know I woulda. If he can hunt, and make it that far in he could've went elsewhere.

This being said, it coulda been another incident that blew birds up. This is why locating as many birds as possible in order to be able to quickly move to another bird is so critical. It's also the reason roost hunts are to me so important. If that guy woulda blown my birds he would've had to sit in my lap as I don't try n call from 200 yards. Yes it can be done but you mentioned its state land.

Birds gobble hunters show up.

If it was a roost hunt n the bird wasn't already dead, the other fellow came in so early there'd be plenty of time to try spot 2,3,4, especially if you were able to roost multiple birds.

Roosting is key to short undisturbed hunts.

In case there are newer folks reading, roost hunts mean locating em the night before n setting up near the suspected fly down area. NOT shooting em on the roost

That kind of crap happens..Nothing you can do about it, but I know how it can piss you off. I got into it a few times, in the past, with guys. Once was a real pissing match with a little man syndrome tough guy  BITCH, who obviously had his "tough guy" act work for him, a time or two in the past. The little bitches tough guy act ended that morning.

 

Sorry…. but the thought of that little bitch puke still pisses me off.  Best thing to do is walk away, and make plenty of noise on your way out….

Ruined is sduch a strong word. So the guy strolled in and moved birds out. If that is all it takes to RUIN your hunt, then you do not know what a hunt is about. Granted, I would have been disappointed, but In would have been thankful I had the time out in the woods.

I will give replys to some of the posts here. First- Shawnhu---- a line of at least 20 cars came in about 10 minutes before this guy showed up. So I know he (piggybacked) on in . The birds did not leave when the cars moves past at 150 yards or so. This guy was ablebodied for sure.

    Bowguy 1---- I like your imformative post about roosting!! I have only roosted one time and I did get the tom. I might do some roosting early in May though.-------Lawdwaz- the arts are for defense only. no master here- just a student.

What vehicle did he drive? Did it have a handicap plate or mirror tag? What color, make, or model? Did you contact authorities about the 20 cars that entered a no motor vehicle area? If you suspected that one entered the property illegally, I'm sure you would do the right thing and help authorities put these offenders in their place. You did give authorities the description of said vehicle right? Surely you know these details as you witnessed such violation?

I'm so glad to be able to hunt private land and don't have to deal with carp.

 

Think I'd be pizzed but would have let him know he ruined my hunt. Did he know you were there before he spooked the birds ? Perhaps even hunt together that morning ?!

So all you had is a typo? Not hot air at all, it is reality. A hunt is ruined by a guy walking onto you public land is quite simply whining. If that ruins your wholehunt,that just shows the superficial side of you. Buy a big chunk of your own land to avoid the dramatic ruination of your whole outing.

Not sure you ought to be critical about someone else's grammar. Jsyk, "ALOT" is not a word.

Had a similar issue, I was sitting on the edge of a National Grid trail and watching some nice birds that were crossing a cut field to me, the guy gave me permission to hunt the property the birds came out of but this one hunter was coming up the trail in between me and the turkeys, he spooked the turkeys back into the woods and he followed behind to chase them but obviously he didn't get one as i watched him walk out the same way he came back up the trail.

Boy did that tick me off as he knew i was calling them in and he tried to take advantage of the situation, glad he didn't take a bird cause some words might have been exchanged and he wouldn't have left with the bird.

Public land is what it is. The more people the more BS you deal with. I keep saying, if you hunt public land, you get the fall-out that comes with it. How people handle situations is all on you. Just remember, getting into arguments while holding a weapon can be bad news. Just sayin".

 

Bill, do you have any success stories to share with people? You seem to be fixated on helping new turkey hunters gain knowledge, to do that you have to post threads/stories where you killed a bird.

Yes public land is what it is and i accept that, no reason to go to prison over something stupid but i also believe people need to learn some common sense, anyways I've killed a few birds on public land and it's very rewarding when you do after so many times you've failed to get one in or couldn't get one to close the distance people usually give up after a week or so, you'll usually find your self alone in the woods after week 2.
