LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

Went to one of my better spots today after seeing 16 deer last time I hunted it. As I was walking in around 1 I jumped 3 does that took off towards the pines. Once in the stand I could see that the area had been used heavily earlier in the morning so I figured I would catch them heading back to feed. Around 330 I catch movement off to my right and see its a smaller buck. I decided when I was walking in that I would take a younger buck or doe this sit. The deer slowly approached and I let him have it at around 30 yards, he ran 50 yards and piled up. This is certainly not a monster deer but after the hours that I have put in and with having two young boys at home I am extremely happy. I was getting worried as the season was coming to an end that passing up on some smaller bucks earlier in the season would come back to haunt me. This upcoming weekend the pressure is now off. I always look forward to the late muzzleloader season so maybe I can connect with one of the 8 or 10 pointers we had on camera earlier in the season.

It's taking me forever to skin this deer...I do as much as I can before it feels like someone has dropped my fingers into a vat of boiling oil...then I have to run in and run them under cold water to luke warm so the  the pain goes away...My Gosh it's cold out there and the deer is colder!

grow, would something like these help?

Thanks...I just need to use heavier Platex gloves over the surgical ones I had on.  Usually I skin them when they are still warm..she'd been hanging since Saturday and was very cold. They are so much easier to skin when done right away..We've had great hanging temps but rain in the 30's as well...preferred she didn't hang skinned in the rain. Done and will be quarted and processed tomorrow. Jars are ready for pressure cooking and the jerky will be cut and put in marinade.

I Know it's not an in the field pic but I was not in a good photo condition in the field. It's a long story,,, outcome is dead deer and no trip to hospital for me needed.
I passed this buck the last Tuesday of bow because I could not guage his antlers or get an age on him with my small area where I could see him.
Him and 3 other bucks came out in the newly planted hayfield which gave me a long time to look him over before I shot. 250 yards off the cauldwell field pod system.

18,5" wide , 5.25" bases, 180 lbs dressed. i have 8' ceilings in the shop and still had to tie his head up to get his nose off the floor.

It looks like everybody is stepping up to the challenge and getting some nice deer in the end of this season.  I'll be out there again in about an hour but this morning I can sit a while longer because I don't have to go to work at 8.  I'll probably just sit till I get too cold or get a doe and then warm up and do it again this afternoon.

Live from the living room. Passed on my last chance of regular gun.  Weather where I hunt doesn't look good for a drive thru the hills. It'll give the woods a chance to rest too. Honey do list today. ML Monday thru Wednesday. Good luck out there today folks. Way to get it done yesterday guys !

Hunting a small farm that I have sole permission to hunt. I haven't been here all year and saw a ton of tracks coming in. My great aunt called last night to let me know they cooked their last pack of venison last night. I'm thinking that was my hint to kill her another deer and if any of you have ever tasted any of her pies or cookies you would completely understand why I have an itchy trigger finger this morning. I had said before that I didn't need another deer this year year but that's changed and if it doesn't have horns or bumps it's getting it this morning.

Dont you people work!!! Sorry, that was just jealousy coming out..lol..good luck all.

I work from home and have the ability to get pretty flexible with my schedule. I can be out my back door and in s stand in 15. Not the best hunting back there this year but it is what it is. I pretty much get out at least one sit most days. I try to compensate lower deer density with more hours in stand! I'm just stubborn lol.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
