wooly
Awe man..., I don't get my hands on many of these things and now the DEC wants one of my prizes for their fall harvest report data. I know I already answered their vague question they ask when reporting and told them the spurs were "longer than 1/2 inch" and beard was "longer than 3 inches". If they really wanted more accurate measurements than that, why didn't they just say so? I could have counted all the little lines, and all the big lines on the tape measure myself for them. ....and on top of that they hit me with a "trick question" on the return envelope asking how old and what sex I THINK the turkey was! I didn't see a box to check for "not mature" or "1.5yo" so I went with juvey male. Would that be the right answer for 3/4" spurs and 7" beard or is that considered "mature male" by them? (that's an honest question I have) How 'bout that "if you take a second bird" sentence.... last I knew, we were only allowed one fall bird? Now they want spurs from poached birds too,lol
stoneam2006
That right there is what's going to cause people to not report. Sometimes I wonder if they have a brain between them allSent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

That would have been one stupid looking, one legged gobbler mount and I don't think there would have been any discount for only having one drumstick, lol

Well I called dec and told them I had froze it bc I wasn't skinning and was taking to have mount done. Told me couldn't be froze when I brought in and I had to thaw it and that they were going to skin out lower jaw and take it. I said ok but asked if they would give me a nusence (?) Tag if the fd it up. Assured me the wouldn't so ok..then I asked them if they could put the seal on a sealed bag with fisher in it bc I didn't need any holes in it as there wasn't any in it now. Said no they had to put hole in foot for tag. All and all very ineffective way to get support from outdoorsman. The only good part was the guy who skinned out jaw knew his stuff l. Fast efficient and ready when I got there. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
turkeyfeathers
Never thought of the taxidermy thing. And according to state should be missing a leg. That's asinine I don't have either spur from my fall bird. But then again it didn't have but a nub as he was a jake . Guess I lucked out Another well planned out NYS procedure. Next year we'll be sending in buck testicles ...

wooly
Almost felt like there should have been a box for me to check to just plead guilty to something...., even if it was just not knowing what I THINK I know about turkey age classification according to them, lol I can't even imagine why they would care what I think, but there's gotta be a reason. Sounds like some kind of run around with the fisher stones. Hope the mount turns out satisfactory for you after all that.
Lawdwaz
Heck Matt, if I'd have known I would have sent you one of mine. All spring birds........I put this together a bunch of years ago and only add to it every few years after the spurs dry out enough to hog out the marrow. Stinks even when dry..............They hang with pride in my basement stairway. Congrats again on your successful hunt.

Pygmy
Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, when I took my first turkey with decent spurs, I simply answered the questions and then wrote on the envelope "mounted" or some such thing. I haven't been arrested yet and I suspect the statute of limitations has expired since then.. Perhaps I slipped through the cracks...

Nice collection Larry. Those spurs are bigger in the flesh than that angle shows. Due to lighting issues and an Iphone, that's the best I could muster. A few other sets were lost here and there and of course the one and only spring gobbler I have mounted is in the Buffalo Gun Center on darn near permanent loan. (my wife says NFW is that coming back HERE)

The big reason my g/f bought a shotgun a few years ago to try hunting and the sold it was I made the mistake of taking her into my buddies fathers taxidermy shop. She cried, sold the shotgun, and the 'rule' was created that I can never mount a deer and bring it into our home.

I leave mine to dry for a couple of months then cut then with a band saw very similar to yours, or maybe a little closer to the spur. After that I use "Q-Tips" to clean out the bone marrow inside. they don't smell after that!!! Look's like you may need a spur display of mine!!!! LOL.....
