Buying deer bait

Here's my problem with baiting. I don't want to be forced into baiting myself because a neighbor has changed  patterns and movements of the deer with his feeders and bait. I have no interest in participating in "baiting wars" trying to see who can train the deer the best to compensate for their lack of hunting skills.
I try not to train the deer or condition them to develop patterns that make my hunting easier. I hunt the deer as I find them, and I would not appreciate anyone arranging those patterns against my efforts. I also do not like the mentality behind the idea of trying to draw deer away from a neighboring hunter's property. There seems to be a bit of "good for me and the Hell with you" attitude in that kind of thinking.
The other thing is that we pay the DEC to manage a healthy herd of deer (you can agree with that or not, it doesn't really matter). They have stated that their biologists believe that baiting and feeding pose a health hazard to the herd. I, nor anyone I know, has more credentials than the DEC to credibly make those decisions, so my attitude is that it is the law and needs to be abided by.

No time and science has proven the fact. Your DEC specialists were the ones that said 5 years ago that CWD would devastate the herds all across the country and now states are relocating Elk from CWD positive states and releasing positive Elk from places like Wind Cave. They were and are full of it!Those that have a piece of paper and sit behind a desk no less than the everyday landowner for the most part. Anyone can go by the rules or choose not to. I know when it comes to my property I will do as I see fit regardless. And as has been proven, the numbers that do the same are huge!

I have seen automatic timed feeders that people invest big bucks in, and I logic tells me that like a lot of things, if they didn't work, they wouldn't be manufactured or sold for very long. Also, those TV programs where the guys are sitting in the elevated box-blinds sipping coffee waiting for the huge bucks to come out into the openings quite often slip up and show glimpses of the feeders that these huge bucks are heading for in full daylight. Also, I have seen the pictures in magazines where bucks are wandering around feeders eating bait. and those pictures were daylight pictures. I have also read articles in hunting magazines talking about baited hunts, and there is no talk about how it doesn't work on mature deer. So the conclusion that I draw from all of this is that baiting has no age barrier. And even if it did, the reasons for making baiting and feeding illegal have nothing to do with age or gender of the deer.

But even besides those points, are we really such pathetic hunters that we have to train the deer to make themselves available for easier hunting. I have no problems with scouting and learning the food source part of a deer's movements and patterns. But I personally have no satisfaction, need or desire to condition the local herd to pose for my shot.

Have you ever hunted deep dense forest where your chance of seeing a deer are few and far between I think that's why a lot of people do it in the Adirondacks and yes some get caught and hefty fines. But some people hunt hard and never see deer that the difference in hunting northern tier and southern tier. Bigger tracts of woods less deer almost $100 for a license. Southern tier lots of farm land and that comes a lot of deer and dmps none for us up here. Apples work corn works carrots work alphalfa bales work hay molasses pumpkins hell in old forge my old boss had a pic of his kids feeding deer cookies lol

I have been hunting that deep dense forest a lot more lately, since my in-laws decided to move up there.  The 6-point buck that I killed on the edge of one, late last fall, had a belly full of corn.   I was thinking the corn probably came from a farmers field, about a mile up the road.  We have only ate the tenderloins and one back-strap from it so far, and it tastes just as good as the corn-fed ones that I have killed at home in the southern zone.  I hope the  rest of it will see us through until I head back up with my crossbow and ML in a couple weeks.  I really hate to buy meat at the store.  Two years before that, I had killed a stout 8-pointer, from deeper in that dense forest.  It was also good tasting, but not quite in the same league.  It was older, and had a stomach full of nuts, which might explain the slightly lower taste quality.   If I manage to kill another older buck up there, it will be made into hamburg (except for the backstraps and tenderloins).

And again, when it comes to credibility I have to go along with those that have made a college and daily study of it and those who deal with such subjects as elements of their career, day in and day out. And that would be the DEC. I see no reason to believe that they are inherently stupid or mentally challenged because they have chosen that career. I haven't figured out any ulterior motives or scams that they would be trying to pull. But I do recognize that the biologists have devoted a certain amount of time and effort to learning and researching such things as opposed to those that just simply have a bias or nothing more than an opinion.

I too have offered opinions on game management, but I do recognize that when you come down to it, my credibility definitely doesn't hold a candle to those that have the believability of their area of expertise. So we're all entitled to have all kinds of "opinions", but as readers of those opinions, we are entitled to assign credibility based on actual credentials.

Yup, agway out here brings in triple the number of skids of sweet feed in Oct to Dec..... must be for all those extra horses we have out here that time of year.  I still can't get my head around Dicks though, they actually sell license and provide space for hunter ed courses.  Same place next aisle down is selling Rage 3 blade heads in NY and whistling dixie.

The thing I love is the attitude of baiters. I know a couple of people who put corn out " so they can watch the deer on stand" they say they don't do it to hunt over!  I always look them straight in the eyes and say bullsnizzle, if a big buck walked out you would put it down. They just look at you like you punched them in the face.

The thing is that you don't even have to be hunting over it to be breaking the law. You don't even have to have a weapon any where's near you to be breaking the law. If you put out food for deer, you are breaking the law. Deer feeding is illegal in NYS with one county exception.

Yes sir. No shotage of guy's baiting in the hilltowns where we hunt Matt. Saw a couple of em last week at Agway. They alway give me the wink and smile. Whatever. Known them for years.  But I don't care to listen to their big buck stories later in the season either. I always say "thats good, I gotta go, see ya later". So some may call me a p=! €k, so be it. Perhaps I am at times.

Funny on some of those "hunting" shows where the "hunter" sets up in a blind 20 yards from a pile of corn or a feeder, then kills a buck of a lifetime saying ""....whew....what a hunt". Pathetic. My system of being in the right spot and wait them out is cool with me. I have a feeling I will arrow a buck of a lifetime very soon, which will mean the world to me as I encroach on 65 years of age and beyond.

Be careful in areas with bait, if you are caught hunting near any bait location DEC will fine you for it even if its not yours!   Best bet is to report it so they know its not you putting it out.

Old Forge is one of the few places where deer hunting is not allowed in the ADK, for many years deer where fed in the area.

This statement I why I or many others do not hold much faith in our DEC or worry about their so called smart laws. One can bait here but not there? Riiiiiight

Debating whether or not to turn in two neighbors for this. Its really effected the amount of deer ive been seeing around. seems like they will be getting a visit soon. enough is enough. breaking the law is breaking the law. if you need bait to hunt then you should take up golf. or knitting.

I would highly suggest talking to them first, nothing is worse than a neighbors who are pissed at each other.

Hunting around bait is illegal in Sullivan County, feeding deer prior to and stopping prior to the start of the bow season is legal
