To late to for Winter Rye throw and mow??

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if it's too late for a throw and now of WR into a old hay field?

It looks like we should still have temps in the 70s.

I think you'll get some growth. I have a cousin who plants rye in his no-till corn fields after harvest. I think he planted in mid October last year and had 3-4" of growth by gun season. Not much for food plot use, but the deer were in it and it's good for the soil for next year.

Temps aren't going to get too cold within the next 2 weeks at least so you might be able to get some decent growth. A lot of it will depend on how much moisture you have. I'm dry as a bone here and wouldn't think about planting anything because of it. If we had been getting some decent rains the last month, I'd try it but for me it would be way too dry. We do have some rains moving in over the next week so that might help. If you don't mind the possibility of wasting money on seed, toss it out and see what happens!
