Hey everyone 

I'm knew to the sport and looking to learn as much as I can. I was suppost to go up to sterling with a friend of a friend but the guy had been dodging me. So I've decided that I will head to sterling or Stewart forest by my self this Monday 10/09/17 and wing it. Maybe walk around with my bow and see if get lucky. Worst case scenario I get good excerside out of it. If anyone could help out either teaming up or letting me know where to go I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anybody knows of a butcher and the prices so I can take my deer when I harvest one. I live in NYC even tho I would love to see my neighbors faces as I carry a deer from my car to the 5th fl of my building I don't think it will work out.

Welcome bud and best of luck. Many years ago we use to chase bunnies with hounds in stewarts. One time i ran into a local at a deli and he 3 nice bucks in his pickup. Although i never deer hunted stewart, i remeber him telling me like it was yesterday that his and his families key to sucess was to find the swamps in stewarts and setup on deer runway trails. He said when hunters came into stewarts it was almost comedic all the deer he would see in those swamps. Where those swamps in stewarts are, i dont know but im sure using google earth, topo maps, asking DEC would get you there. Best of luck!!!

Good luck. Still hunting with a bow is tough, but it can be done. Like you said, it will give you exercise and if nothing else an appreciation for how skittish deer can be. Your best bet would ultimately end up being to bring in a light climbing stand (20 lbs or less) and find a spot, assuming you can't find a mentor in the meantime. I hunted first couple of years without anybody else and had some success.

Welcome! Nice to have you join us!  A couple suggestions for you. 

Bring a GPS, so that you can mark good spots you may find. And to find your way back to your vehicle.

Venture off the marked trails.  Look for swamps and dense thickets. Follow along the edges until you see a run coming out with lots of deer tracks. Find a large tree or stump that is downwind and 15 to 20 yards off that trail. Sit down in front of or behind the tree and be still as possible. 

That will be a starting point. As each time you go out you will pick up and learn, a little something more.

Most of all, enjoy every second you are out in natures splendor!  Have fun!

      It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike?       What are the best steps carry a bow on your back?

      The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
      You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.
