Finally enough leaves have come off that my buddy and I hit a big oak ridge on the 4F side of the river in New Berlin this morning. Had a lot of does with fawns come through early munching on acorns. Around 10:00 I had two little bucks and a decent 8 point come by at 15 yards. I said to myself that you guys better not go up the ridge higher because my buddy will definitely shoot the 8 point.

About a half hour later I heard crashing coming from above me and here comes the same three bucks running back by me. None of them are bleeding so I figured he spooked them some how. Come to find out, he shot at the 8 at 10 yards, and skewered a maple sapling a little over an inch thick. I laughed like hell because he did the same thing about 25 years ago. Just like the last time, it was the only branch or sapling between him and the deer.

Not much rut sign at all,  the does still had their fawns, and the bucks were still together. Just not ready there yet. Going to be the same as most years for us I think, with the last week of bow and the start of gun being the peak chase stage.

Sat most of the day with a cold wind pushing me around. The few times that it calmed down it was actually a beautiful day. Then the wind would start up again. Saw no deer. Packed up and headed out. Nearly hit 5 different bucks on the way home including a giant wide 10 pt. Also had a doe walk across in front of my car. I literally had to come to a stop to wait for her to get out of the way. I've had 6 sits without seeing any deer from the stand. I think I'm going to start hunting over the parkway. Might up my odds a bit.

Have had a rough few days in the big woods, bucks seem to be laying low with minimal sign. Found some does yesterday and a cow moose today I hunted a place I haven’t been since I was a kid a little over an hr drive from my camp and it was much the same for the deer saw a doe and fawn and that was it, no buck sign at all in the higher elevation. On my way up I saw 2 cows and a calf moose and on the way down I saw the bull.

So far in the big woods this year I’ve walked 97 miles let 2 bucks go let 1 bear go and have saw 7 moose. 2 more days up here before I have to head back to civilization for a few dad duties.

And I'm hearing a lot of guns going off, wtf?

Nice day around me, someone started sighting in by me mid day, and I thought that sounded better than blowing leaves.

After I started 2 more folks in opposite directions joined in. LOL

I just thought you had a math deficiency,
Nice night any action?

I’m an engineer. I do just fine with math. Philosophically speaking a lot of hunters will disagree with brown it’s down, But that’s philosophically speaking not legally speaking.

I sat this morning. My grandfather passed late Thursday. So I was in the woods for some therapy. It’s not all about killing for me. I saw a doe, doe fawn, big button and a nice 8. And was busted by a Tom turkey with a beard that was dragging on the ground. The turkey I was fully prepared to take.

Dark to dark and nothing but that 6 point early. Takes the wind out of your sales. I’m off to the Pacific Northwest for the week, hopefully get
One sit in next weekend

I feel your pain! Dark to dark here too. Saw a decent 8pt that should be thanking his lucky stars he made me hold at full draw long enough to realize that I didn't want my season to end just yet and I still had hopes of scoring on one of the bigger bucks in the area! BUT, after an all day sit, I'm really glad he didn't come back to temp me again, as I was in NO mood! LOL

Is the trip to the Pacific Northwest for business or pleasure?

So I missed....

Shot at a buck, big body small rack, at what I thought was 35 apparently not. Sailed right over its back.  No explanation on this one .  Saw him coming out and usually would pass. Thought it was a big doe, til I saw antler when it stepped out.  Let it come out in clear "meh" stopped and shot.

Deer didn't move then walked away tail down into woods.  Looked for blood and hair nothing. Knew I shot over it but needed to be sure.  Must've jerked the trigger.  Dunno.  No explanation.

Been a tough season but I have 8 days left to make it happen still in bow season.

seasons closed?

Yes Turkey closed Friday at dusk in the Southern Zone and a few weeks earlier up North.  I got the envelope in the mail yesterday for my hen-leg from opening weekend (a couple weeks ago).  It will go out with the mail on Monday.

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

Just want to relay an experience I had this weekend regarding hunting regulations and other hunters.
I've had several  hunter's tell me last weekend(10/12/2020) that muzzleloader was open, it is not. I also had two other hunters last weekend confront me as to why my son was carrying around a rifle and hunting deer. I calmly explained the youth weekend and the rules around it. After that everything was cool and we continued our hunt.
I know at the end of the day we're all trying to participate in a sport we love and maybe harvest some game. My thought is to just make sure you're up on your local hunting regulations. Not just so you are within the rules, but also so you can assert your right to be where you are, hunting the way you're hunting.
I know when I have been operating outside of the regulations I have appreciated a person respectfully correcting my ignorance and I try to pay it forward by being informed and respectfully educating when required.
Thanks for listening, off my SB...

      Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing my first rifle to go hunting deer for the first time.  However, I have received contradicting information regarding the types of rifles that are legal.  Based on what I have read, it appears that I am able to use a bolt-action rifle with a pistol grip and a detachable magazine which holds 10 rounds.  However, I have been told that this is not the case. I can't seem to find where this is stated.  Can any one here provide me with some insight into this? I'd really appreciate it.
      Thanks in Advanced,
      Alfredo
