 Crunch, crunch, crunch....

Deer? What deer? Don’t worry, I’m scent free.

Here’s hoping for some deaf deer to be wandering through.

Sorta anticlimactic second day of season for ya after shooting slammer yesterday

Couldn’t sleep so what else was I to do. Depending on how the day goes it might just be a half day instead of a full.

Wow I would have thought you would sleep in today.  Well done.

On top of not sleeping well I hunt with one of my best friends as well as a great group of guys. I’ll be happy to harvest a doe today and pumped if my friends gets something.

Little tip from Cabin Fever... Check forecasted wind direction before gutting deer the day before! That's all I've been smelling for the past couple hours and I'm about ready to gag!! I might have to rub some doe in estrus urine under my nose to not smell the gut pile anymore!

Live from the livingroom.  71 degrees, no wind.  Quiet walk in to my recliner.  Horses, dogs and cat are fed.  Birdfeeders are full.  I have already drank half a pot of coffee.

Day #2 of "house arrest".  When she told me she was going to Florida to see her sister during the second week or rifle season, I tried to play it cool.  I told her I would already have a buck down by then.  Nope.  Now I have to try and get it done the last 3 or 4 days of our 16 day season.  At least we have another 9 days of muzzleloader after that.

My buddy tagged a 198lb 5 point yesterday.  He saw 2 more bucks by the time he got it back to his truck!

Good luck everyone.

Hmmm.   I was told they wouldn’t but I have never sought reprints.   Good to know.

I am skipping the morning hunt. I was out yesterday in the wrong location, sat for a few hours then decided to still hunt and cut some tracks pretty quickly, and i think i scared those deer on my way in.

I stayed on the east side of a north south ridge and expected to find some deer there. Tracks is all i found, and a fresh scrape. Then hiked for a long while with no tracks, then hiked to the top of the ridge. More tracks and three fresh scrapes there.

Then i went down to an empty beaver swamp on my way back to the truck. I got close to the edge on my side and a deer stood up on the other side, about 140 yds away. Small doe.

Then another stands up,and holy moly the biggest buck i have ever seen on the hoof. You know how you have to look for a rack sometimes? This was the opposite, twice as wide as his ears at least. He didn't know why the doe got up,and i put the scope on him but had branches on my side and brush on his side. I gave the shot a 10% chance of connecting,so passed. I tried to work my way to an opening, but he took a few steps as well and was covered again. Then the whole group took off,6 deer total.

Pretty neat too see him though.

Springfield #1898 30-40 Krag. My dads. I can remember telling me he waited for a nice buck to keep walking uphill in PA so he didn’t have to drag him uphill. 300 yard shot and deer tumbled down the hill dead. Miss you Pop 3-29-2018. The 2018 deer season is only a few short months away, and we are bringing back a deer hunting contest, The HuntingNY Whitetail Classic! You can sign up for the contest by replying to this thread, sign up starts now and will end at Midnight on September 28, 2018 at which time this thread will automatically lock. In the contest section, each hunter will get their own thread, in which entries should be posted. Contest entries must be submitted by Midnight on January 2, 2019 (Sorry, seasons that run into 2019 are not included in this contest).

      Contest Rules

-The Deer must be taken in NY during the 2018 deer season (Oct 1 - Dec 31)
-Deer must be tagged with regular NYS carcass tags (Buck, DMP or Either Sex). Deer tagged with nuisance permits or DMAPs will not count.
-There must be photos of the deer included in the post(s), they must clearly show the hunter, the antler points of bucks, a clear picture showing the inside spread measurement (must clearly see where each end of the tape measure is touching), this year's tag attached to the deer as well as a contest card (details below)
-Each hunter can enter up to 2 bucks and 2 does

      Scoring system

-Each deer will earn 10 points
-Bucks will earn 1 additional point per scorable antler point
-Scorable antler points are 1 inch in length measured from the base of the point. Fliers, kickers, droptines, etc ARE scorable
-Total score of each hunter will be added up at the end of the contest, highest total score wins
-In the event of a tie, greatest measured inside spread of the entered buck(s) will be the tie breaker (if hunters are tied and each entered 2 bucks, the spread on each entered buck will be measured)

      Contest Card
With a black marker, make your contest card on a sheet of white 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Write large enough so it can be seen in one of the entry photos. It should include the following

At the top, write - 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
below that include your screen name, and the date and location of the harvest (WMU)

The card must be clearly visible in at least 1 photo of deer or that entry will NOT count.

      Youth Division

There is a separate youth division for hunters under age 18. Exact same rules and scoring as above.

      Prizes

We will be announcing this years prizes in a separate thread once we have the contest section ready.
