Around 9 I had A big buck with a very dark rack  step out. I waited Until he was in a shooting lane and pulled the trigger. He face planted and then got up and took off into some thick stuff. It looked like a good hit, so I went To see the spot where I shot Him. Found 6 places where he had fallen down and was bleeding heavy. Ended up tracking about 300 yards and decided to back out. Now I’m sitting at home driving myself nuts. My brother in law is going to come over in an hour or two and we will get back on the trail. Here’s a pic of one of the spots I found. I should Have backed out immediately but I didnt Think he would go far. I’m pretty sure this buck is one of the big 10s I’ve had around here. If it’s not him, it’s another big 8 I’ve seen. Those are the only 2 with really dark racks.

What part of 9H??....we were over in Collins Center in the morning.....it was the wild wild west.
Heard shooting all morning.....people stomping all over the neighboring properties by 9am.....random neighbors tracking wounded deer onto our property.

Not to be pessimistic, John, but it often is not a good sign when a deer goes down at the shot and then gets back up...Could indicate a high front leg hit, or a hit close enough to the spine to drop him temporarily, but not permanently disable him...

Hoping you get him....Got my fingers crossed for you...Good Luck !!

I did the same on a nice big buck last couple days of crossbow. Went a long time before dropping. The bigger ones always give the best drama, Good Luck with him.

Live from the “I hope my darn recovery ropes arrive early enough that I can get my darn wheeler out of the swamp” thought process.

2x4 and a couple ratchet straps. Cut the 2x4 so it sticks out about 6 inches past the tires on the outside. Ratchet strap the 2x4 onto the top of the tires. Do both sides. It makes a sorta redneck paddle. I’ve done it before. It works trust me!

It wasn’t like a spine shot. It was similar to when I’ve hit them in the shoulder. Front went down immediately and he ran. I hope It’s not a high leg. He was bleeding pretty heavy. We will see.

Bad end to the weekend. One of the guys shot a big buck yesterday afternoon. Definitely high leg found bone and he was dragging it bad. Tracked this am for GPS total distance of 2.7 miles (up and down ALOT) was granted permission on two pieces crossed a decent creek, and was ultimately stopped by a property line with a hunter in a stand who decided he would continue to track by the sounds of it. It's a shame and the guy who shot feels awful, the buck had been on cameras for a few seasons and became a topic of our pre hunt talks and dreams lol. Gave it everything we had and ultimately hope someone kills him to end the suffering.

Ok so now I'm really curious.

First I was with you and thinking why not put the left glove on, you know so your outfit matches. you dont want to look silly while out deer hunting. But here you are saying you carry an extra glove out to the tree stand with zero intentions on using it except to drop it from the stand to provide the members here with a few moments of entertainment. I'm so confused!

Brother in law is on his way over. Gonna go get back on the track soon.

If you know the property well I would see if you can figure out where you think he laid down again. What are the possible exit routes and could a poster or two be slipped in quietly incase he is alive and moves?

Either way it is a dead deer if you do not have property issues. Staying on a track in snow is easy, its just the finishing now.

I've had a button buck pounding down acorns 60 yards away for the past exactly 2hrs! How much can that little pig eat??? I was thinking about moving my stand ~30 yards closer to those oaks at lunch, because the deer have been digging like crazy for acorns there. I hate to spook it, but end it already and save some for later!!! (BTW, using bow)

Good luck John!

If it was high leg pushing him could be a good thing keep him moving and don’t let the blood clot

Good luck hope this ends as a good story!  If it was bow i would be more worried but gotta figure with gun it did more damage.  A little blood in the snow looks like a lot so always hard to tell but if there is decent areas of blood after you prob got em.  They are tough . Good luck!!!!!! Hoping for hero pics soon

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

Just want to relay an experience I had this weekend regarding hunting regulations and other hunters.
I've had several  hunter's tell me last weekend(10/12/2020) that muzzleloader was open, it is not. I also had two other hunters last weekend confront me as to why my son was carrying around a rifle and hunting deer. I calmly explained the youth weekend and the rules around it. After that everything was cool and we continued our hunt.
I know at the end of the day we're all trying to participate in a sport we love and maybe harvest some game. My thought is to just make sure you're up on your local hunting regulations. Not just so you are within the rules, but also so you can assert your right to be where you are, hunting the way you're hunting.
I know when I have been operating outside of the regulations I have appreciated a person respectfully correcting my ignorance and I try to pay it forward by being informed and respectfully educating when required.
Thanks for listening, off my SB...

      Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing my first rifle to go hunting deer for the first time.  However, I have received contradicting information regarding the types of rifles that are legal.  Based on what I have read, it appears that I am able to use a bolt-action rifle with a pistol grip and a detachable magazine which holds 10 rounds.  However, I have been told that this is not the case. I can't seem to find where this is stated.  Can any one here provide me with some insight into this? I'd really appreciate it.
      Thanks in Advanced,
      Alfredo
