My grandfather used to put out set lines for eels  on the Chemung River near Corning, back before the dams on the Susquehanna  blocked their  passage upstream...

Back when I was a mere wisp of a lad, we used to catch an eel now and then when we were fishing the river for bullheads..As I remember it, they tasted very similar to bullheads when fried...

back in the mid 60's to the early 70's we would drive rt 97 up to my grand mothers house in narrowsberg and @ all the rapids you would see pots or weirs or what ev er they call them .It was a big thing smoked eels in the restaurants and road side stands . We use catch a lot of them in Jamaica bay[saltwater] but we were kids and  would give them to the striped bass fishermen
