We just use plain water ….as much as it wants. We set it up the  first weekend in Dec. and take it down right after New Years. We have only had 1 or 2 that didn't retain their needles very good. Once they stop absorbing water they usually are close to being done. We water once a day.

Maybe plain water and a fresh cut would be best at your house, shouldn't give the tree your lucky juice. Gotta keep the wife happy.

We never seem to have an issue with our fresh cut trees. One trick I have heard of is for the first few waterings use hot water. Something about hot water stopping the sap from hardening and closing off the veins. We have done both cold and hot water with success so I really don’t know
