.17 WSM for squirrel

Anyone using or have experience hunting squirrels with the .17 wsm. I've got the savage bmag. Thinking about taking it out for some squirrels. I've read good and bad results as to saving the meat.

Way to much gun for squirrel when a .22 long rifle would be fine. With a .17 wsm reaching 3000 ft. per second and 2000 ft per second at 200 yards you have yourself a excellent rimfire varmint gun. The only way to make it better is a semi auto platform.

I have a 22 mag it blows them apart nothing left especially with hollow points

Better take head shots only...I have shot a few dozen squirrels with the .17 HRM, and that is way too destructive to meat IMHO , unless you make a head shot..Even with a ribcage shot you may very well pull the critter in half when you skin it..

Must go FMJ's if you insist on it.  Double lung shot with my 17HMR ripped them in half.  Only the back skin held him together.

As stated   Head shots.  Seen a few pics of  nuisance rabbits my buddy shot. At first thought he cropped out the head from pics. Nope , heads all gone

Head shots!hit a woodchuck at 200yrds with 17 hmr hollow points and at 200 it did some damage.can imagine close range on a tree rat!

a .17hmr literally brings their insides out, I could only imagine what that would do. My step son has the same gun and he drives tacks with his on a target we have setup at 167 yards.

How about a .17 pellet gun ?

Depending on FPS should work well out to about 40 yards or so. I shoot 7.9grain pellets at about 950 FPS. And take squirrels with out a problem. Outside of 40 yards the drop becomes a bit much but is doable if they are sittting still with my scope to 60 yards due to the reticle. This is with a 20 yard zero and a few different pellet trials to find what performs best.
