Where Are The Snow Shoveling Kids These Days??

Recommended Posts

So far- this was not a bad Snowstorm here in Monroe. No more then 4" so far. A Wet snow though.  Now back when, I was a Kid, I would RACE out the door armed with my Shovel around 8.30am or so and start knocking on Doors.  Other Kids would also be out. Sometimes 3 or 4 of them. Running on the road with Shovels and up to Front Doors. If, I was Lucky, I would get 3 driveways done as my competition were going fast as well. The Job had to be done well though.  Some people would give me 5 Bucks and others would give 10 Bucks. If you were real Lucky-- you got 15 Bucks for a Long Driveway.  Kids don't do this anymore from what, I see. Now- it is the guy with a Plow hooked up to his Ford- F-150. He charges 40 minimum. Probably alot of Elderly people would prefer to pay that kid 20 Bucks if they could find one..

Kids under 16 should be happy to earn 10 dollars an hour these days, especially when it's tax free.  Most driveways can be done in an hour, two hours at most.  If they do it quick they make $20/hr tax free.

These kids have real issues when they get their first real job making $15 an hour at best and the take home pay amounts to about $12/hr.  They soon decide they won't work too hard for that amount and start to piss off the boss.

Then they wonder why they can't find a better job later on.  The public school system should be teaching these kids the facts about employment and earning a good living.  They sure as hell teach them about socialism.

Me too! Good memories. Ten or twenty bucks in your pocket back then made you a rich kid!

I enjoyed those days of competition with the other kids. Often you could see each other's progress. Who would get to the next house first.  Going out now with my makeshift Roofrake. A old cane connected to a hard broom with black electrical Tape. Saves money and works well!

I agree however before we moved there was a young man who would walk up and down the steep hill we lived on to go into town and shovel.  He didnt care what he got payed.  So i always let him shovel the smaller storms. Give him 10 bucks.   If the person was over 70 he did there drive way for free.  Good kid he waters all the hanging plants in town early in the morning  from spring until they get taken down.  But other wise i never see any other kids doing it.

Their competition these days are the guys with plow trucks . When I was a kid, I can’t recall any neighbors having their driveway plowed, today the majority around me do .

Good thread Bill.  Yeah I used to do that as a kid too. Nowadays with everyone having a snowblower or snow removal there isn't much of that.

Last year had two kids come by looking for work but I had just finished with snowblower or I would have them do it just cause they had ambition enough to put down the video games .

Another thing i havent seen kids do anymore is hit cars with snowballs , it's probably been 20 years since i was hit with a snowball or saw one fly across the street in front of me while driving .

Kids just don't go outside. I never see the kids that live around me, theres 4 of them. I wouldn't be able to pick any of them out, or witch house they belong to.

It actually looks odd to see a group of kids riding their bikes around anymore .

It's not just lack of kids going out to make $$. I have a 65ish lady that lives next door. She has grandsons between 12-20 years old that live within half a mile of her. It would probably take 2 kids an hour or two to clear her drive and parking area. Guess who plows her out? Me and my tractor. I'd feel better if the kids were trying, hell I wouldn't let them struggle with it-I'd go over. It would make me feel better of they were out there though. The lady always offers to pay me, but I won't take anything.

Just finished up here. And guess who came to help? My grandson Zach! He worked doing all the car cleaning and shoveling for almost two hours, while I ran the blower. He busted his butt for a 14 year old. He's also going home with $40 in his pocket! He didn't want to take it. I insisted.....I want him to know hard work will be rewarded.

He could have stayed home where it's warm, and played video games. He wanted to go help grampy instead.

Man......do I love that kid.
